Couldn't find anywhere else to post this...

To those of you with black (or any other dark colored) desks, how does dust show up on it? Obviously a dark desk will show dust a lot more than a light wood desk would, but is it noticeable enough to the point where you're disgusted or uncomfortable with it?

Of course you have to clean your desk from time to time, but nobody wants to clean twice a day or anything.

Right now I have a birch veneer desk setup, but I'd really like black desks later on. Something like this:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50121453/

no glass desks or anything.

Thanks for your input!

I have a black/brown Ikea desk. The dust is more noticable than it is on my light colored desk at work. I try to clean up my desk about once a week, so it's not too bad. I also have a gloss black printer and monitor. Those show the dust much quicker than the desk.

I agree with the above post. I have a dark desk and I give it a dusting every 3-10 days depending on how much I use it/how lazy I'm feeling! Usually ends up being about once a week.

I don't mind much but if I were to ever have a lot more stuff on my desk (unlikely - I prefer minimal setups) I'd want a lighter desk so I didn't have to move everything too much :)

EDIT: In fact reading the above post again I also have a black/brown IKEA desk and gloss monitor :p

I bought ikeas "black-brown" color (which is black IMO) furniture for my room. I have to say, never again. It looks great don't get me wrong, but you see scratches very quickly (can easily be touched up) and the dust is just insane. Coming from someone who is very critical about having things neat and clean, its a daily chore to dust. If I had to do it again, I'd go with something lighter.

Where did u get the legs? I plan on building a desk this summer. I am debating on just attaching it to the wall or something like you have done. Not sure yet.

In a german do-it-yourself store called "Bauhaus". I think every construction market has them for about 15-20 € (20 - 25 $) each.

I'd say so.

Attached isn't my desk, but my TV stand after I recently stood on it for... reasons.

My white desk on the other hand, I didn't know was dusty (after not being touched for just as long as the TV stand) until I ran my finger across it and went "bleh...."

Thanks for the opinions/stories! I'm still going to go with the black setup. I might just get one of those quick feather dusters and hopefully that'll do the trick with keeping it looking nice :D

Also, thanks for that. I am going to ikea this week and I was worried that black-brown would be a bit more brown than black.

What is your general color scheme? If it's all black, you may find that a white desk actually provides a nice contrast. I was concerned about getting a white desk in my otherwise-black bedroom but it's actually worked out really nice. I'm not going to take a pic as it's a mess right now but here's a pic I took when I first set everything up, to give you an idea:

EDIT: And another shot just so you know how a white desk looks with Apple stuff on it :p:

you know, i have really thought about it for a while now. i really do want the black/dark color scheme. at the moment, my walls are white because i live in an apartment and haven't even painted my bedroom. i have tons of posters and other stuff all over my walls, so painting would be a huge hassle. also, i am planning on moving in the near future, so i'll have to wait on painting the way i want. most of my electronics are black, besides the apple stuff, but I feel all the things i have on my wall will contrast nicely, along with the beautiful apple aluminum. i'm planning on getting two small white lamps in addition to my existing LED lights i have with my desk. i know that's a lot to envision without pics, so i'll definitely be posting a before and after setup once it's done!

with that said, when i do have my ideal setup, i would like to paint my room a darkish blue color, somewhat of a navy blue. in my head i know what i want and everything looks perfect, at least i think  .

right now i have my birch veneer desk setup and i really really have my heart set on the dark desks haha :D

I love the way it looks. Is it sturdy enough since it is pine wood? If so, I think I found my new desk. :)

the desk is quite sturdy, it has two metal rods built in on the underside to stiffen it up. if anything, the legs are the less sturdy ones : the desk shakes a bit when i draw more vigorously. To this end, i would recommend getting the trestles as legs or the small Alex drawer/storage as leg supports. have a look at the entire range of supports.

I have the 150cm table top, the 200cm one requires and extra leg in the middle.

Pine is a soft wood, so it dents easier than, say an oak table. However, it survived architecture school & building models on it, spilling everything from coke to solder & glue on it, plus 3 house moves. Definitely worth the £30 i paid for it :)

I figure I'm due for an update from last time.

image.jpg

I've added a Nexus 7, DVB-T2 set top box for freeview HD, complete with a neet DAC. Also new headphones hanging on the light and moved my Braeburn dock to my desk (close enough to my bed that I can reach it but far enough to make alarms annoying to get me up in the morning!)

Spent about an hour re doing all of the cables under the desk too so they're a lot tidier, although I had to resort to copious amounts of duct tape to get the power strips to stay stuck to the bottom of my desk :p

Next up on the list is the Nexus 7 pogo pin dock.

Oh and I got a new plant on the left too :)

That's what I was thinking it was. I'm currently trying to decide between running my MacBook Pro on a stand open, or running it closed clamshell in a HengeDock. Both have their advantages, but I'm still torn on the decision...

I'm curious what the advantages of running in clamshell mode are? Aside from using a bit less space I can't think of any.

Considered a henge dock before buying my monitor, then settled on an mStand and finally ended up buying neither and having my laptop next to my monitor :p

(Or on a large Java 1.1 book at work)

desk and lamp questions

Same question from my side. Your desk is great.
Plus, where do I get the desk lamp?

Thanks

Thanks! The desk is from Officer Depot. It's called the Gramercy Single Pedestal desk, from a company called Whalen. It appears to be on sale on the Office Depot site at the moment, for a good discount from the full price that I paid. :\

The lamp is just a standard lamp from Target. I use an Edison bulb in it instead of a traditional or CFL. I like the light it gives better.
