The MacBook 12" is the only Mac that can charge via the USB port. For any other Mac, you'd need a MagSafe cable in addition to the display cable.

I am aware of this, however I've seen some videos/pictures where they use a magsafe cable and a thunderbolt (or HDMI) which will fuze into one cable going into a thunderbolt display. Meaning due to the power level of the thunderbolt display, the macbook is able to charge.

I only had it hooked up to the monitor and running on battery. I would have to connect a power cable to that hub if I wanted to charge it as well.

Macbook 12" users would be able to do that with just one cable using the Caldigit dock (if it ever releases).

Ah, I see... Well thanks anyway, I guess I don't need a cable but glasses then. Haha.

Is that Duet display you're using to extend your desktop to the iPad?

So this was in December, not so long ago.

And here's the little update.
I sold my MB 12" cause it wasn't sufficient for my needs for combining college & work. So I went for a Windows machine & bought the Dell XPS 15.
The 1080p widescreen also got replaced by the DELL U2515H ( and also hoping to buy one again to have dual monitors )

Looks great! Are you running Elementary OS or something?

Also, wallpaper or ban :D

The ones you see that have both a thunderbolt and magsafe connector fused together are from an Apple display (thunderbolt/cinema display). The display has a magsafe connector and thunderbolt cable coming from it for convenience.

The thunderbolt cable does not deliver power in this arrangement, that is there to deliver the video to the display and link the devices plugged into the display to the mac. The magsafe is the only one delivering power.

The minimal amount of cables you can use if you want to deliver power to and get display from a macbook pro is 2. One is magsafe for power and the other is either HDMI out or thunderbolt out. You can use a thunderbolt hub which you could plug USB drives and audio devices into.

I've always found it interesting to see how a setup changes over time. Here are pics of my setup, one with each of my primary desktops: a Power Mac G4 (pic from 2005), a 2009 Mac mini (pic from 2010), a 2011 iMac (pic from 2013), and a 2010 Mac Pro (pic from 2016). It's the same desk in all of the pictures. I've had this desk forever, and it's been a wonderful desk to me; it's massive and dominates any room it's in, but it offers so much working space! The last pic is an aerial shot of the desk to show just how much space there is on this thing.
