Nice setup and everything, but i'm really sorry to hear about your transmission. That car is damn nice, how many miles does it have? And please, nobody tell him how he should gotten a japanese car. That won't help the situation at all.

Yup... I've been really down on my luck... and I've actually posted my sob story on a couple boards... but I just don't understand my luck at all...

Basically, I got a job when I turned 15, and worked 30hrs/week during school to save up for a car. I turned 16 and bought a '96 Monte Carlo. Just a few months later, I needed an $1800 transmission rebuild. In a matter of owning that car for about 2 1/2 years, I put nearly 10 grand into just keeping it running. I was basically working 35hrs/week on top of school just to pay for the car that was getting me to work. At the beginning of this last summer, the tranny started slipping again. I was just a few months after my warranty on my previous rebuild was up.

Finally, I had enough. I don't have anyone to co-sign for me, but I found a bank willing to give me a *decent* interest rate. I figured through college, I'd need something reliable. I picked out this Grand Prix. I actually love the car. It's really, really nice for a college kid, IMO. It's a 2006. I bought it in August ('07), with 34K miles. I have 41K miles on it now, and I need a complete tranny rebuild. Just 5K miles out of warranty.

I've done everything I can. Called the dealer, a GM dealer, and Pontiac themselves... nobody will help me. And I don't have $3000 lying around, as I'm barely getting by paying for college. :(

So, I'm at a loss for what to do. I really can't afford to take out another loan... so I have a feeling I'll be paying $300+ a month and working my ass off in college while my car just sits in my driveway back home. It's basically been sitting up at the dealership (for the 2nd opinion) for about two weeks now... since I can't even afford the $80 tow to get it home.

Eh... whatever, though. At least I'm alive! And I have a great family that would help me, I think, if they could. I'm trying to be positive... but trust me, it's kinda tough, lol.

Anyhoo... that's my essay. :p0

Oh, yeah... and for the record, for those "buy an import people." I was initially looking at a Mazda 3/6, but it was a bit out of my pricerange. I went looking at Civics/Accords/Corrolas, but they're just too darn small. I'm 6'3", 200+ lbs, and have 16 shoes. I'm a bigger guy, and I felt cramped in all of them. Plus, in my budget, a similarly priced import had usually over 80K miles. I thought I was buying the smart car with lower miles and a newer manufacturing date. Guess I was wrong...

How do you like your HP Monitor?

I had a few problems with washed out colors (but they are solved thanks to some people in this topic)

But further more: I love it

the facts that it can display full HD, is connectable to my PS3 make it a very nice alternative for a TV.

Plus the fact that it had 4 USBports, which means that I can connect some periferals to the display and I don't need to connect them always to my MacBookPro each time I take it with me and put it back again.

Oh and the center speaker does a very good job of hiding all those cables coming from the screen ;)

That really sucks that it just ran out of warranty. Was it a GM Certified car, because I thought it would have been? It's really unfortunate that the transmission dies 5k out of warranty. My mom's '01 Yukon XL transmission died 200 miles out of warranty, and needless to say she got it fixed for a much lower rate. I find it interesting that the transmission would die on a Grand Prix, the 3800 V6 and 4-speed transmission has been around forever and is pretty much bulletproof. I guess it is not in this situation :( Have you talked to the corporate people at GM or Pontiac? That might help, but i'm not sure how far you would get with them. Once you get the tranny rebuilt, you might consider trading it in. This car might end up like the Monte and put more money in the car than it's worth. It's usually a hit or miss with GM cars. My mom had a '99 Suburban that had a bad tranny as well, but her '05 Yukon XL has been fine with 41k miles on it so far. My grandpa had a '98 Monte Carlo LS and it has been reliable. His '06 Impala SS has had a few issues, but otherwise fine.

As for jap cars, they are much tighter than american cars are. I'm 5'10" and feel extremely cramped in my Camry at times. Japanese people are always smaller, so they design the cars around them and thats why the seats are always small and uncomfortable. It's always easy to find a driving position in a Pontiac G6, Cadillac Seville, or Buick LaCrosse/Lucerne. Camry's... very uncomfortable seats. Plus, they are expensive even when buying used. I think you found a good deal on an '06 Grand Prix. Too bad they are dying out in a few years :(

Very nice :)
I would like to an iMac as a kinda 'permanent base' for when the MacBooks out and about but to be honest, the cost is a little too high, however nice it would be

Bah, try living as far North as I do in Scotland; we get about 2 minutes of daylight these days.

I never thought it had gotten that bad...
Down here it's around 6 but hey, you know what they say about beggars and choosers.
