i saw on your flikr page that you use your speakers via toslink for 5.1, iv tried this but cant seem to get 5.1 myself. is there soething i need to tick in preferences somewhere?
The only time I need it is when watching DVD, and there is just one thing you need to do. Open DVD Player, but don't start a movie. Then go to the Preferences, and the "Disc Setup" tab. Down toward the bottom, you will see a drop down for "Audio Output" to select. Just make sure that you have that set for the "Digital Out - Built-In Output" option.

I did the same thing when I first got the speakers. I was freaking out. I thought maybe the speaker control box was broken, or something. Then, I found that. Once you have DVD player set to output the audio that way, it will send whatever you want. If that is Stereo, it will go. Or if its DD or DTS, it will go as well. Hope that helps.

And thanks for the comments so far everyone. Yes, I like a nice clean setup. I can't stand clutter, so its very minimal on my desk. You should see what I did for cable routing. It took forever, but works great, and I have no cables showing under my desk either.

May I ask why your center channel speaker isn't under your monitor?
I'm still trying to work that one out. Like I said before, I just got the new BenQ monitor. The old 22" Sony CRT that it replaced was good, but it was old. But, one thing it was good for, was holding the center speaker up on top. This new monitor obviously won't allow that. And really, I don't listen to a huge amount of 5.1 stuff anyway, so its rarely used. But, it is something I'm trying to work out.

I'm thinking about building a bracket that attaches with the Neo-Flex and gets the speaker up above the monitor. That could work, I just don't know how well the Neo-Flex can cope with the weight. Its already pushing it with the big 24" monitor, I don't know that it would like a few more pounds of speaker.

I have thought about, in a pinch, raising the monitor, and just putting the speaker underneath, like you say. But, I don't really want to mess with the position of the monitor much. The joints that it rotates on are kind of a pain. I had to cinch them up real tight to get it to sustain the weight. I'd rather not mess with it now that I have it where I like it. But who knows.

SevenInchScrew, I'm loving your setup! I'm thinking about getting a mini, and wonder if by chance you use it for Photoshop or Garageband? I'm hoping they run nicely on the mini. Thanks in advance. :)

Well, I do both, but neither to any great degree. I use PS for simple little retouch/filter stuff. And, I goof around in Garageband a lot, but nothing productive. But, the Mini does both of those just fine, and its only a little 1.66GHz Core Duo.

But now that you can get a 2.0GHz Core 2 in the Mini, you should have no problem at all really. The only thing the Mini lacks in, really, is the graphics. With its onboard Intel graphics, it won't do heavy graphics stuff super good. I have a friend with a Mac Pro, and he can open like 10 windows and Expose never flinches at all. The Mini will a little, especially if one of those is video.

But its not bad. Even at 1920x1200 on my new monitor, effects like Expose and Coverflow and all that are fine. But, they will get the fan spinning a good deal. Thats about it. At NO point in using either Photoshop or Garageband on this machine do I think my work would get done any faster with a more powerful machine. It would be nice, but like I said, for what I do, the Mini is fine.

Overall, the Mini is great little computer if you don't need HUGE amounts of power. Which is all I need for now, so its perfect.

Nice setup, but I'm curious. How fast do you find the SSD on the MacBook Air compared to the HDD on your Mac Pro for booting up and loading applications?

Just to clear things up... you're asking about any speed differences he might have noticed between the Macbook Air and the Mac Pro? Right? Ok. Yeah.

It's a mathmos lunar eclipse Click here
It projects some crazy blue lighting onto my ceiling when all other light is off, its meant to be the stars.
That is wonderful. I love how the glass does that. Too bad it appears to be something I can't find in the US. :(

Well, I finally got my new monitor, and my setup is, at long last, worthy of showing. My trusty old Sony CRT monitor was just not cutting it. Oh, and don't mind the crappy camera work. My camera stinks, I know. Its next on my list of things to replace. Anyway, here is my setup.....

Mini
I LOVE that mini. It is adorable with the "superbad sticker on it. ;)

Just a reminder, please remove image links from your quoted posts.

Thanks.
In my defense I removed all the others and ensured there were TIMG tags instead. At least I refrained...slightly! :D

What type of HP printer is that clayj?
That would be an HP DeskJet F4180. My aunt needed a new printer last year, and the 4180 was fairly inexpensive and looked nice, so that's what she got (at my suggestion). Then my Mom needed a new printer, so we got her a 4180, as well. And then when I redid my office and wanted to get a new printer, I decided to get a 4180 for myself, because (1) I like how it looks and (2) when I invariably have to help my Mom or my aunt with a printer problem, I have the same printer they do and can walk through the steps with them.

If it had printed in color, I would have seriously thought about that sweet Samsung laser printer that Apple sells. Alas, sometimes I have to print stuff in color.
