Suppose it's what I get for studying at the 4th best CS department in the UK (according to the most recent survey that the lecturers have been boasting about recently!). I get stupendous amounts of work & it's one of the most expensive towns in the UK to live in :(

Ya. I graduated in a small class, but most of us went to small schools to start out, including the top 3 (I tied for salutatorian). Mainly I just wanted to stay close to home, but it is alot cheaper.
The place I'm transferring to is still pretty small for a university, but they are really good at adopting technology. From wikipedia "FHSU has long been recognized for its “high-tech/high-touch” vision. The underlying assumption of the vision is the integration of leading edge information technology with the humanizing aspects of personal attention to achieve the most productive learning environments available in higher education."

They're actually known for their education program. I didn't realize they had such a good CS program until a lady my mom works for asked if I wanted to go to a banquet they(the shool) were having in town. Before that I had no clue where I was going from here. Funny how things just fall together sometimes.;)

Speaking of small classes, this year's intake here is one of the smallest in years. Usually there's about ~35 who stick it out to 3rd year, but by the end of 1st year we're already down to 31 people! There'll probably only be ~20 people continuing into 2nd year, but that means we get the entire 2nd year lab of ~50 iMacs all to ourselves!

Nice setup. I'm a CS major too, where are you at?
I need to get one of my boxes setup up as a NAS as soon as I can afford some hdd's. What are you doing exactly on your server than you need to upgrade from dual to quads lol.

I'm at Nottingham Uni in the UK. The idea is that I can run a load of Virtual Machines for doing (virtual) network testing and general cross-platform messing about to learn on. I run a video games society, so need quite a bit of power for running loads of game servers at LANs. I also crunch for World Community Grid, plus I've started upgrading my server less frequently. So this upgrade should last two or three years (want to add some SAS and quad gigabit NIC fun as well soon though :) ), although I just got the motherboard for the octal and it seems to be broken :(

Is that a Slug I spy up in the top right of the second picture?

Almost, it's a WAG354G.

Where do students these days get all their money?! Unless I work hard all summer I'm not even going to be able to afford rent & utilities, let alone a dual quad-core server :/

Heh, well as with iMpathetic, a lot of my money is tied up in computer junk (and bicycles :/ ). I did a gap year working and work at the same place through some of my holidays, which helps a lot though.

About class size, we've got 160ish doing comp sci! In my first year at the moment. Where are you studying lost eden?

Well, my dad got an iMac like me, except with a 1TB drive:

24" 2.8Ghz Core 2 Extreme Merom Processor iMac, 1TB Hitachi HD, Matshita optical drive.

I suppose I can't complain about money in computers, I got lucky last summer & got some IT consultancy work for a startup with venture capital backing, paying me £350 a day. But then I got landed with a £5500 accomodation bill for this academic year so that all disappeared :(

I did 1st year CS at UWA last year (University of Wales Aberystwyth, not University of Western Australia!) which was 150+ students, but now I'm at St Andrews (doing another first year~) where we're only 31 strong!

I would love for you to explain the secret...

I would be more than happy to explain.

Basically, it all started when a friend of mine's mother's computer broke. I told her I would buy it from her for $25, and she agreed. I used it for almost a month and a half, and then worked out a deal with a person I'd bought a G4 from before, to trade the G4 I got and fixed for a TiBook, at the beginning of November.

I used the TiBook until around the middle of November, when I traded it for a dual 800MHz G4. I missed my TiBook, so I sold the g4 and bought it back from the guy itraded it to.

I sold the TiBook yet again, and bought yet another dual 800MHz g4 andused it foraround two weeks. By this time, I had two hundred bucks laying around, so i bought a new 1.83GHz Core Duo mini, the previos generation. I loved it, but something about the lack of portablity (even though it's tiny) really got to me. So, i traded the mini for an 867MHz TiBook. i used it for almost a month, then traded it and a bunch of ancient Macs I'd been given at the dump for a ThinkPad T60. I traded it and another laptop I'd acquired on CLfor a 2.2GHz blackbook. i kept it for over a month before selling it for a Powerbook and thinkpad X41.

The X41 I sold for a Dell Inspiron 1405, and then for a Dell 24" LCD.

The powerbook sold yesterday, and I'm buying a ThinkPad Z61t today.

There you have it. My story. :D (sorry for the "i"s and spelling, I'm hastily typing this on a broken keyboard.)

Including my new Tonium Pacemaker!

How do you like your pacemaker. I read an article awhile ago before they came out that implied they were going to be hard to find and fairly expensive. Was it worth it? How does it stack up against the average iPod? Please share.

I really like that one! I love seeing ACDs and other pricey Apple stuff getting used in a realistic environment.

(realistic, meaning making it look like someone uses the computer!)

(Before somebody complains that this isn't a Mac setup, it is when I switch the input on the monitor!)

Meh, I think it's just general bickering, instead of constructive discussion or pictures. I haven't really seen a lot of it myself, but it's obviously up to the mods to decide.

Anyway..... STOP! Cable Time! I know it's ridiculously messy, but I don't think I've done this before. Please, please, PLEASE don't whine about how they're PCs. There's an iBook sitting closed on the big table. It shouldn't matter anyway!

You were asking about how to make your setup look better a while ago... I think I was encouraging you to get rid of the folding table... :p You know, you could do a lot with just some cable ties or velcro straps. Spend maybe $5.... My TV stand has more cables than that, but they're all relatively tidy.
