the eee pc doesn't look to shabby even next to a new MBP

Well yeah, but that's pretty much the most expensive netbook there is.

It's like the MacBook Air of netbooks, which actually means that it looks the best (arguable.....I like the HP Mini-notes and Acer Aspire more), but you can't upgrade to a larger battery because it's like 40% thinner than every other netbook out there.

What does everyone think of this new netbook?!

http://gizmodo.com/5070119/hp-mini-1000-is-a-sleek-svelte-102+inch-netbook-with-a-custom-os

I'd rather use the XP SP2 on it than the new Ubuntu - unless someone can let me know via PM an excellent music composition/synthesizer app (like Garageband or better) is available for Linux.

Looks extremely nice, and HP is finally dropping their price... unfortunately 6 cell won't be available until January or so so I think I'll hold out. Plus the 3 cell isn't even on sale in Canada yet..,

What do I think? I think this is the one I'll be getting. I hope HP actually releases their real follow-up to the Mini-note 2133 though, with the metal body and 1280 x 800 screen. I don't mind that it's on the upper end of netbook pricing because at least you're getting something in return for the extra money.

I had an Aspire One (Linux, 120GB, upgraded memory) but it developed an annoying periodic "tick" noise, and I just couldn't get used to Linux. Plus with 120GB I really would like iTunes on there.
Was going to get the XP Aspire One, but then I spotted the Samsung NC10 was about to be released... 160GB HDD, XP, six cell battery, bluetooth.. all for £10 more than the Aspire One XP model? Yes please! Pre-ordered and due this week. Will post some pics when it arrives.
Nervous though... it'll be my first windows machine for nearly 5 years. Already got the security/antivirus software ready to roll....

Fear not, and welcome back to the light side of complete freedom of options and choice in software. You should consider a second gigabyte of ram and put Vista on it.

Vista doesn't fare well on netbooks. Windows 7 might.

And as for antivirus, don't install it. It'll just make a slow machine even slower. It's not hard to protect yourself without antivirus! Just be smart about how you use your machine!

Also, I love it. Its as well built as any Plastic Macbook I've used.

HP Mini Vivienne Tam edition. But I think it is going back to the store. I cant stand Windows, it is slow and frustrating. Plus typing is an issue.

How do you even survive on 40GB HD space?

How do you even survive on 40GB HD space?

I would suggest it's not used as a main computer. May be wrong, but mine compliments the Mac Pro. Goes to bed with me, and out and about. For that, 60Gig is more than enough.

The Mini 700 does have a SD slot though, so I might get myself a 16gig SDHC card, just to boost it a little, for movies while traveling etc.

That Vivienne TAM edition is mad expensive but for a lady ... nothing like it has ever been done before. Look at the post just above yours that I quoted and inquire with him for asisstance ... run OS X for a few days before full refund and see if you like it.

cheers & paint the town red!

Where did you get the Compaq from? Been keeping my eye on them since i first saw them on the internet. A quick general review would be great :)

Replied to your message JBazz, the process looks a touch daunting but it really is simple enough, I hope it helps.

@ Chrismcfall, sure... Erm...

My Compaq Mini 700 (Or HP Mini 1000, depending on which side of the Atlantic you live) is the 1.63 Atom version with 1Gig of RAM and 60Gig 1.8" HDD. 2 USB ports, Headphone jack, expansion port (I have no idea what that is used for) and SD card reader. Mine was £289 from PC World (Yeah, yeah, I know) and to be quite frank, it's a fantastic little machine. Really has surprised me. The 10.2" screen is a very clear panel, with sharp colours. Resolution of 1024x600 is decent in OS X but not perfect (some windows are too long), but for it's purpose and realistic uses it's great.

The build quality is what has surprised me the most. Not having ever owned a "PC" notebook I wasn't too familiar with general build qualities, but the ones I had used had almost been flimsy and didn't feel particularly well made. The Mini 700 however is a sturdy little thing and really does feel as well made as any Plastic Macbook / iBook I've ever had. The design is very nice. It has a glossy screen covering which all newer Apple Laptop users will be familiar with, but I've not used it outside yet, so not 100% how it holds up in direct sunlight, but it looks nice and really brings the colours of the display out. The outside of the case is glossy and much the same as the iPhone 3G which I fear could be a scratch magnet, but again it looks pretty. On the back there is an easily accessible RAM slot which makes upgrading to the max. 2GB as easy as unplugging the old stick, and replacing with a new one.

The keyboard is fantastic. Being the full width of the machine it isn't much smaller than the Apple Wireless Bluetooth offering. The navigation keys seem to lack the quality of the rest of the keyboard for some reason, but it's hardly noticeable.

The battery life is about what I expected. Comes as standard with a 3-Cell battery which provides between 2 and 3 hours battery life under OS X. Not too bad at all I don't think personally. Not quite long enough for my flight to Egypt next week, but you can't have everything I guess. A optional 6-Cell battery can be purchased, giving 5 to 6 hours battery life, but they come at quite a premium at the moment (Upwards of £50).

Installing OS X is a relatively easy and so far everything is fully functional (I have not tested Ethernet), and it runs really well with the 1.63 Atom not having to work particularly hard for general internet browsing and even when using ARD. There is some lag when using the fancy graphics in Leopard (including some slight lag on the dock, even with the 3D knocked off) but it is a minor issue for this remarkable little machine. It does come with a built in Webcam, which does work under OS X but at 1.2MP, it's poor.

All in all I am very impressed for my money and am more than glad I took the plunge. Don't get me wrong, it's not going to be my main machine, far from it. But it little Mini 700 compliments my Mac Pro perfectly for that odd time I want to goto bed and still be on the internet, for controlling my iTunes from the other side of the room, and for watching Movies on a flight.
