to be honest my neighbors don't mind.
as long as im not playing at 10 or anything.
ive noticed you only are able to play for like an hour and half so its not like its 5 hours of blast beats.
i have my kit downstairs, its half built into a hill so the sound honestly cant be heard from outside -- only upstairs.

i can generally play for as long as i like, 2hrs onwards.. but rudiments only excite me for so long!! im off to go drum now, hoping to make a youtube vid or two :p

If you do go electric pay extra for the mesh pads. They make a world of difference.
you play drums Jess? impressive! yes i agree the mesh pads to make a difference, electric kits are so.. synthetic though..

Im jealous of anyone that gets to use a Mac in their profession. Only a crappy PC running XP SP3, bad quality too, taken on my 3GS. I know, it's not a Mac, whatever, but it's where I have to spend 9 depressing hours every day, plus the title said where I work ;) If you look close enough you'll see my iPhone's charging cable...the only thing related to Apple in the entire photo :p

never heard of Ivan P (must be a WA thing :p). at least your on a computer using MR! :)

you should steal some money from the cash register that i can see in the right, that would cheer anybody up ;) :D

I could, but I'd need your credit card number so I can recoup the government's losses :p (I work for local government... :( )

question about drums

Not really. Honest. I've longed for an electronic kit for ages and have used a Roland TD-7 a bit. I've used the mesh kit at Guitar Center and there is a noticeable difference. I read up and the mesh will be better if you play them a lot because there is NO give on the regular pads. You really need the mesh pads to preserve your wrists and shoulders imho.

The mesh pads add at least a few hundred over the thousand ++ you can spend on a Roland kit. I'd be happy with an older TD-7 but the TD-9 is amazing and I think comes with mesh pads.

Electric kits don't have to be synthetic. You can program a roland machine and I've seen them come REAL close to an actual kit. Actually Def Leppard's drummer will use a kit often because he only has one arm.

i have played a few gigs using my drum teachers Roland something something (dont recall what it is, but its VERY old). it doesnt have the mesh pads (he has mesh practice pads-they are a bit better), compared to a real kit its very fake. the sound might be fine, but compared to a real kit you just dont get the 'feel' of it - ESPECIALLY on the cymbals, hitting a pad just doesnt resemble a real cymbal, you dont get it 'flapping' around (you really have to concentrate to hit it in the right spot when that is happening haha)..

they are pretty nifty though, but too expensive for me :(

ughhh i need to make a vid for my grand parents as they are the ones that bought my cymbals, for my birthday, in nov., of last year
is your stuff mic'ed up?
electric kits are so.. synthetic though..
ya way diff. especially the mesh ones. they are insanely bouncy
i can generally play for as long as i like, 2hrs onwards.. but rudiments only excite me for so long!!
ha ya. hybrid rudiments baby. dude learn some funk, thats what im doing right now, wow hard.
or you could try and play anything by meshuggah. its sounds easy, but its more messed up to play than dream theater. there beats are like dream theater where they say "hey lets do one measure of 4/4 then 1 measure 7/3 than 9/4 and 4/3 now reapeat" except no one says anything about time signatures or length.

anyway, back to the original topic.
i go back to school in a week.
ill deff post a pic of my work environment, its laughable at best.

uh oh, you should get onto that!!
is your stuff mic'ed up?
yes, but not very much - they do make a nice sound though.
1x$10 mic in kick
1x$50 mic "over head" the right hand side of the kit
1x$50 mic "over head" the left hand side of the kit.

it sounds pretty decent, once i put these videos together ill link you to them.. hopefully they turn out ok.

oh my yes! its like playing on a trampoline! kinda of a cheaty way..

ha ya. hybrid rudiments baby. dude learn some funk, thats what im doing right now, wow hard.
eheh, funk is what i do best!! :D ;) i got inspired by the Chili Peppers, Chad Smith is probably the drummer i sound most like..

im a very "beaty" person, i dont play "hard" stuff but i play good to listen stuff..

heard a few songs, sounds tough. dream theater is pretty ok, i can play one or two songs (havent tried that hard).

the videos i recorded today are for a uni friend, the three songs use the following time signatures: 4/4, 3/4, 7/8 and 6/8. it keeps changing, its awsome fun to play (i have made it somewhat simple as the drums do not "major" in the songs :D)

i use old (and curent) uni textbooks :D

Thats what I used to do but I could never find the right combination of books for each monitor so they were exactly the same height. I am OCD about that kind of stuff. Uneven monitors drive me nuts.

lol OCD. i have a 17" CRT combined with a 19" LCD, but somehow i found the perfect combination of books! -- it was a database book & discrete maths book on one, a dictionary and some random book on the other. they literally line up perfectly!

pictures 2morrow :p

Well, it doesn't look terribly messy compared to a lot of other desks, but here's what my desk at work looked like a few months back. Meant to post this sooner, but I couldn't remember what computer I had saved the file to.

get an electric kit! they cost a bit more, and are a different experience to an acoustic kit - but are really quiet!
Not a bad idea. Ironically, I do have an old Roland R8 drum machine around here somewhere. I used to enjoy trying to play drums by just tapping the pads on it.

Anyway, cool that you're into recording. It'd be awesome to hear your stuff. I've always enjoyed attempting to record music myself, even if I can't really play it.

what are you editing/ recording with

FCP.

two streams
stream 1: DV camcorder, 25fps, 44.1KHz
stream 2. MBP using QT on "RAW" @ 44.1KHz

audio recorded in QT with stream2.

listened to mp3 version of the song.

on both streams the audio of the actual song will go out of sync with the drums. i have no idea why. i have to change the length of the recording using Audacity (doesnt always work though) but there HAS to be an easier way!!

any ideas?
