But is there the WHINE? or has it been fixed as reported

Dude, hold on man. That's next. I'm waiting for the battery to charge up completely and then have 3 or 4 hours at a stretch so I can charge it down for caliberation purposes. Probably get to it tonight when I get home from school.

But, so far, I'm pretty damn happy

Nope, sorry pal...

That's cool, I'm not gonna at first, not until I have the time to mess with it properly anyway - can't afford any problems with it in the next month and a half!

Im glad your not having heat issues - it is very reasuring to know - this was one of my biggest concerns!

eVolcre !

If you could do the following test:

1) Listen to your computer closely as you scroll in your browser, navigate finder... etc.
2) Now, open the application "PhotoBooth".
3) Do the same things you did in step #1.

If you don't hear a difference at all, you're in luck !
I had to install "MagicNoiseKiller" and load it on boot in order for my whine to go away anytime I wanted to use the computer. Super annoying.

Also... I wish you could feel my MBP. It's f#$%# HOT. I could actually, physically, BURN myself on it if I left it touching the underside of my arm for too long.
Mine is the 2.16 model, with 2 gigs of RAM however.

Anyway, glad you are in love ! I love mine too... but it's already getting a new motherboard :(
Crossing my fingers that the shop calls me today !!!!

Oh, another quick tidbit. I put it to sleep for about 5 minutes. The second it came back on I put it back on my lap and it was absolutely cool. Like it hadn't been running at all. So, if anyone is burning their testicles with the heat  put it to sleep for 5 mins. It literally wakes up absolutely cold.

More in a bit.

Precisely why they use aluminium. Glad someone has pointed out all you have to do is sleep it for 5.

My PowerBook is ICE cold when it's sleeping, when i turn it back on then it gets warm, because the heat is being dissipated through the aluminium. That's how it should be.

I don't think many people know this.

Rich.

Dylan, I'm in class right now, but will run more tests as soon as I get home. I have the same set up as you btw. Now, the whining thing, it DOES need to run on battery power right? Because when it was plugged in, I had my ear all the way to the left side and all I could hear was a whirring - soft - assumed it was fans. But, will do your test tonight. And I HOPE I got a goodone.

Ok - some not so good news on the heat. Before I left home my last test was to put the machine through its paces. Multiple safari windows, one live stream of video, some mp3 and a few chat windows. It performed great. Expose is fantastic.

Heat wise, the bottom got hot. Pretty hot. I had my hand on it and I definitely had to take it away after 15 seconds or so. It would be uncomfortable on bare legs. Now, I had it on my lap the whole time and through my running trackpants I felt nothing. But, I definitely woldnt be lounging around in my boxers with this sucker on my lap.

The top, however, was completely fine. This is the good news. The palmrest area wasn't even warm to the touch. (this is at the same time the bottom was hot ). The area above the speakers was slightly warmer and the area above the F keys was the warmest in the top area. But again, on the top, it wasnt painful or even uncomfortable. I wasn't yamking my fingers away.

Just as a reference, when i touched the bottom i didn't have to yank my hand away like, " Oh $hi+, thats frigging hot". It was more of a , hmm ,, its defintiely hot and after 30 seconds could get uncomfortable. But it was NOT like putting your hand in an open flame or anything which is the impression some people are giving.

The screen, again, is marvellous. Absolutely beautiful. Bright, crisp. By far the best laptop screen I have used. The extra space is great (compared to my 12") and expose is - to beat a dead horse - fantastic. In a mere 3 hours it has hanged the way I do my computing.

And it's FAST. I haven't even done anything processor intensive. So this is just a impression - no benchmarks or anythig like that - it feels snappy. Windows, icons, apps open fast. and internet browsing is amazingly fast.

Maybe I got lucky, maybe the new revs have fixed issues (mine is a 14 serial number). I will keep putting it through its paces and keep y'all posted. If mine is in fact working properly and you can tell that your machine is different compared to my subjective comments, then maybe there is something wrong with yours.

So, tonight.

1. Hardware check

2. Whine check when its on batteries with no applications open.

3. The tests Dylan asked me to run.

Hope this is helping you guys. If it isn't, I can stop posting. But I thought a 'real user' experience might help as opposed to benchmarks and random heat comments. I'm giving you my opinion as a normal user, putting it through things I plan on doing everyday. Until now, no deal breakers. Including heat. Its a very powerful machine adn I expect it to be warm.

Oh - last thing - the perecived size of the machine. I KNOW it's a 15" screen, but if you look at it from a few feet away it really looks like a 17" powerbook. Its slightly slimmer and wider than the old PB but the perception is that it's a hige machine. Which is OK, because the weight and the actual size (carrying size I mean) is that of the smaller PB. We get the best of both worlds with this size ...

I found that out by accident and then tried it again and it worked. It went from piping hot, the post above where I was talking about the bottom, to absolutely cold. In literally 5 mins. Then it took an hour of high intensive work to get hot again. 5 mins every hour is a decent break I think. Its a natural smoke break for me. :)

Score 20 points to me :D

Keep on posting, since then i can quickly run through the checks you do when mine arrives (again, can you give a brief outline of how to do the hardware test - i have no clue how to, and it would save me searching other threads!) Also, i don't spose theirs any "you must do this" etc things in the manual that could result in damage to the mbp if they are not done?

TIA ;)

Hehehe. 20 points. To explain a little further, we're not in a writing contest here. My point is to give you info as fast as I can without being caught by the professor. LOL. So, I type as fast as I can and in 'conversation' mode.

OK Robert, Here's what kkapoor told me about the hardware test.

1. Insert the CD labeled Apple Recovery Disk 1. It's in the nicely packaged little box.

2. Power down the MBP.

3. Power it back up WHILE HOLDING the letter D down. This brings up the H/W test.

When I do it tonight, I'll post what actually happens while going through the process.

As far as initial setup I really didn't have to do much. Plugged it in and powered it up. (this was after just staring at it and holding it for 10 mins). That did serve a purpose though, I was checking for physical defects and the only one I found was that the right side top was about 1 mm short of touching the rubber pad on the bottom. I think I can live with that.

Anyway, once you do this, a little setup box appears that walks you through the rest of it. I also set up my .mac accoutn at the same time. I didn't have any files to transfer over but it asks you if you want to do that.

In about 5 mins it was up and running. Even found airport automatically. Quite intuitive.

Something cool. When I set up my .mac accoutn on startup, it automatically set up OSX mail to be linke to .mac. I thought that was great.

as far as transferring files over, someone in the other thread said to wait on doing that. He said to play with the machine for a few days, see if you can break it and then reinstall OSX. This lets you check if the recovery discs are okay and also lets you fix any problems you may have created while playing around.

I look forward to seeing the results of the sound test while on battery. My T43 thinkpad used to make that horrible high pitched sound when plugged into the network and it would drive me nuts. I would never want another laptop that did that! I'm very happy with my Dell at the moment, but for the future it would be good to know the MBPs are getting some problems ironed out ;-)

eVolcre, cool ! Oh and I'm also a Symetry freak, and my MBP also has the lid lifting up on one end. I just try not to stare at it or it will drive me crazy :)

Now... don't get caught by your professor (although I'm loving your posts !) :D

Im in love with my mbp pro too. Its not a BEAST like yours (look at my sig for mine) but it is great. The whine has been off today all day..i wonder why. Anyhow when it does come on..I open up the app comic life, then close it and the whine is gone. Glad your enjoying it man! BTW, wait till you start encoding songs with itunes..( only took me 33 minutes to encode 141 songs from mp3 to aac, while using safari and adium...  )

OK, I'm SURE this has been covered somewhere, but what is the reason the sound comes on only when on battery. (NOTE" I'm not saying mine whines, I havent checked yet, ) but why would it be quiet when plugged in and make noises when the battery was being used?

I might lift up the other end so that even though both sides are messed up, it's symetrical. LOL

As far as profs, we have a brand new building for the MBA program. Wireless throughout. Stadium seating, the works. So we're kinda expected to be typing or looking down. The problem arises when these bastiches start cold calling. (this prof is famous for it). And if you're typing a mile a minute like I am when I post, and he's asking questions, he's probably wondering what exactly you're typing. LOL. Oh well, 2 weeks to go, what's he going to do? Dock me to a B? Big deal, I have a job allready. :p

Back on topic!

AJMUNI, TO be really honest, I think my machine might be overkill. But, even if its overkill right now, in about a year or so it will be 'normal' compared to the rest. I think. So, instead of buying something now and saving 500 bucks or more and then kicking myself in a year, I decided to go all out and get the best. And once I decided to go with the 2.0 model, my thought [process was, well, may as well spend 300 more and get the next one up. One thing led to another and I ended up maxing it out even though I really have no clue what a 7200 rpm drive does as compared to a 5400. They're both fast ... :)

I spent 10 mins just staring at the box. Then when I opened it, I spent another 10 mins staring at the computer. It is absolutely beautiful. Form following function. I was griping about the 'old' form factor but this really is ideal. I'm not sure how they could change it without losing some of the elegance.

that's basically what i did when i got my 12" Powerbook G4 in august 2004... i was SO excited... i bought it at an apple store here in oregon and the whole time i was going home, i was starring at the box. then when i got home, i spent about 10 minutes just starring at it and marveling at how small and light it is. :) :) :) :) :)

I did that and the noise stopped once Pohtoboth was opened. What does this mean? I have a Rev-D MBP and experiencing heat/noise, Is this something apple will fix?

Man, I'm stuck in school until 8. Can't wait to go home and play with my machine some more! I haven't enjoyed opening a 'toy' as much as this in a while. And, I buy a LOT of gadgets.

I had a rev D (serial starting with W8613) with the whine issue. Some people have reported sending their machines for repair and coming back silent. Not sure why this would be the case as they try to fix the inverter issue and not the processor whine (as it is deemed "normal" by Apple).

Not too sure, but some guy went ahead and took out the little piece of code that ensures the whine goes away, and packaged it in a small little app called MagicNoiseKiller.

To solve the whine, here is what I did:

1) Install this: http://www.red-sweater.com/blog/downloads/MagicNoiseKiller.zip

2) Goto "Preferences -> Accounts", choose your account, click on Login Items (or something like that), then add MagicNoiseKiller.

Tada ! Now everytime you login, you won't hear the noise.
I even forgot I had this program installed altogether :D

Still, Apple should fix this sh*t.

Got mine yesterday as well. I worked a 12 hour shift last night. I do mainly sys admin suff and it was a really slow night so I pretty much spent the whole night playing with it. First to answer a few of the normal questions. There is no whine whatsoever on my machine and had it doing just about everything on battery and off. I have no problems with the screen at all or the tilt it all works wonderfully. As saif above it does get warm but no more than I expected. The hardest part for me was just learning whats what (this is my first Mac). Halfway through the night I installed XP via bootcamp. Everything worked like a charm. My only complaint is when you first install there is no suppoed for the eject Key on the keyboard so I had to go in to the Computer management console and tell it to eject the media so I could put the driver disc in. After I installed the drivers the eject key worked as did everything else. That little quirk did'nt bother really esp since this is the beta for it. All in all I love this machine and I really like OSX alot I think they are succeding in turning me and it did'nt take to much. Its funny I usually feel bad after spending so much money but I like this so much I don't feel bad at all. Tonight I'm expecting another slow night so I plan on doing a little Lan gaming with fellow workers. I'll check back in tomorrow morning after work to let you know how it went but for now I need to get some sleep.

What are the first 5 letters in your serial number? Is it above W8613?
