Bad news gang. I think I might have the whine. It's only coming from the right side. To be honest though, I really can't notice it. BUT, I did as Dylan asked and ran photobooth and it definitely sounds different. Becomes quiet.

I wonder if it's normal to make the sound though. I'm going to run the hardware check and tell you what I find.

Man, I'm stuck in school until 8. Can't wait to go home and play with my machine some more! I haven't enjoyed opening a 'toy' as much as this in a while. And, I buy a LOT of gadgets.

eV

any updates on how its progressing?

how's the hardware test, any whine?

TNT have found my MBP again now - phew! Just got the long wait, but etd has come down from 24th --> 20th --> 19th so fingers crossed I may get it on the 19th, when I leave for uni again!

I think we simulposted. I don't even think I can hear the whine. BUT, it DOES sound different when I open up photobooth so I don't know what to do. I could live with it, but I'm worried because the left side is perfectly silent while the right side is whining. Someone said thats the display inverter. Wierd though, everyone gets the CPU whine which I don't have , but I have the diplay whine. Running the hardware test in a second. Will post as soon as the results come in.

Ran the extended hardware check and it's all good. No issues. I am going to wait and see about the 'whine'. I can't even hear it right now and I'm running on battery power. Unless someone tells me that the right side whine is coming because of a bad compnent and could mess up my machine, I think I can live with it.Heat isn't bad either. It's been on my lap for an hour. The battery life isn't spectacular. I am running it on full brightness, everything on - bluetooth etc - and it showed a battery life of 2 hours and 45 minutes.

I dont s'pose the change in sound is to do with any sound from the iSight? (I know my friends RevA iSight doesnt make a noise, but...just a thought?)

Does the display whine only appear on battery also? I thought display whine was permanent if their?

I wonder if i'll have a 15 like you or a 16...

Still slightly nervous since I can't afford to return it within the first month to get anything fixed.... but surley the years guarentee should be sufficient for any such hardware issues anyway...

Thats good, the battery life doesnt sound too bad - considering everything is maxed up! My PDA probably wouldnt last a full 3 hours if i had wifi, bt, and screen on full, so i'm used to being conservative with such power settings :)

on a slightly different note, i'm looking for a skin/case/bag thingy for mine, what do you think of this one? I'm finding it hard to find any skin type cases available in the UK, this is pretty much the only one I have found!

Robert, I'm not sure what it is. The 'whine' is only on battery power. WHen plugged in it sounds fine. And, it's only from the right side not the left. As I said, I doubt I would even notice it BUT when I run photobooth, something definitely quiets down. So, maybe that means it does have an issue. I'm going to keep running it and putting it through the paces and will keep this thread updated. So far, it's a fantastic machine. Very very fast. Boot up from full shutdown took about 40 seconds. Heat so far is a non issue for me and the hardware check was fine. Mine's a 14 BTW and not a 15.

I ended up going with the BOOQ Powerlseeve. It's a little more than a skin and a little less than a full bag. Holds the machine and an ipod/celphone with the chargers and maybe a think file fgolder. It's perfect for short meetings or jaunts to the coffee shop. And, its so well fitted that it is meant to be used as a sleeve if you put the laptop in another bag. It came in yesterday and looks really nice.

Check out booqbags.com. I have the powersleeve L90

eVolcre, I suggest installing this:
http://www.red-sweater.com/blog/downloads/MagicNoiseKiller.zip

Then, in the Preferences -> Account -> Your Profile -> Login Items, add this program to the list so it starts on startup.

It's barely effects the processor, but kills the noise. It's what I did, and I'm happy now :)

Fun reading, glad to see someone really likes his new Mac.

I really don't think the whine is anything important. My rev A. 1.25 15" had the whine for a few months, but as time went on either I got used to it (which I doubt) or it became much more quiet.

Most of the noise was from the heat pipe settling in IMO. And the 'buzz' harmonics seemed to change when i added the 1gb Ram chip. Today, the loudest thing is the new drive and the fans when I run pro apps. The MBP is a different beast I know, but I still think its mostly 'fanboyism' taken a little to far.

Oh, and the best case for the hard life of student living (again IMO) is from Tom Bihn. I love mine because I never have to think about it. It just works.

Although, I must say, those booq bags look sweet. I'm eyeing the viperM sleeve ... ack!

Yeah, I don't think I'm going to freak out about it. The only concern I have is that if this is the 'display inverter whine', that might cause problems. What exactly is a display inverter anyway? The other thing is that it seems to happen only when the power cord is unplugged. Realistically speaking, I will probably always have it plugged in. I can't think of too many situations where I will need to be running only on battery.

OK, another finding and maybe someone could help me understand this. The whine or the buzz happens only when the screen is idle. ie not doing anything at all. Even if I click on another window, while it is switching over the whine stops and as soon as the other window is active, it starts again. Even if I scroll, the whine goes away. Does this make sense? Maybe thats why the photobooth fix works, the screen is being updated.

Like right now, the screen is not doing anything, being refreshsed etc while I type so the buzz is there. To test it, I clicked on another window and while the screen was being refreshed, the whine stopped.

Does this mean anything to anyone?

DYlan, that fixes the noise. BUT< is the noise from the right side indicative of a faulty diplay inverter like kkapoor was saying? Or is it just an annoyance? WHat exactly is a display inverter anyway?

Well, I'll be damned. It works.

What exactly is it doing to get rid of the noise? Do you know?

The inverter noise comes from the top right hand side of the laptop where the screen meets the keyboard portion of the machine. It sounds like a crackling sound.

The processor whine comes from the left hand side and emits a high pitched sound.

There are two distinct noises caused by two distinct issues.

I actually have no idea what it is doing, but I remember reading from the guy who wrote it that he went into the source of PhotoBooth, or some other app, found the code that was making the sound go away, then just repackaged it.
I guess the code just starts a tiny little process that kicks the noise out.

I've read from A LOT of people who don't even know they have the whine noise until they actually get rid of it, then they're like "OMG... it's a lot quieter now".

Crazy. Apple hasn't said anything about it as far as I know. Apple needs to step it up ! It's like they release a product with a bunch of flaws, and not admit to any of them, as they don't want to deal with the returns / fixes.

This is definitely the last Revision A I ever get :D

I only had the inverter noise. The cracking sound. But, the application above caused that to go away.

Try another app, I think quiet macbookpro is the name. It has this little slider bar that you can set from 0 to 1000 and you can hear the whine fade in and out. Definitely shows the problem more clearly I think. You're supposed to move it as far away from 0 as possible without having the noise kick in. I could only get mine to 70 or so, but I have freakishly good hearing. (i.e. I can hear a tv on in another room even if there's no sound playing - whine of the tube).

Slide it from 0 to 1000 and back and you really notice it.

Mine's in the shop right now. I just got the call with "we couldn't duplicate the 'whirring' noise". I said it's WHINING not WHIRRING you stupid ****s. (minus the stupid ****s part, as at this point i'm still maintaining composure).

Apparently my shop is only an Apple retailer and not a store. Even though they market themselves and present themselves as an APPLE STORE. God I hate KU. I'm going to rip them a new one if they make me mail it to apple for a week and a half to get repaired. I didn't drop 3 grand on a new laptop to send it in for repairs on the 4th friggin day I own it. Absolutely not.

I also have this bizarre audio glitch where an audible click is played each time an audio file is initiated. Be it the 'woop' noise from changing volume, or an itunes file. All the same. I'm going to stab the snobby little farker at the shop if this isn't resolved.

Agreed! Apple needs to be better about this. I was about to buy a 15" PowerBook HD back in December but the screen issue kept me from doing it. After seeing Apple not do anything about it, I decided to go PC again. I loved mac but the problems just scare me away. I really hope the MBP and MB get all their problems ironed out soon.

I believe it is true. The noise is associated with the processor running at a lower speed to conserver the battery. So I believe the noise killer just ensures the processor runs at a higher speed that eliminates the sound.
