I've always kept my phones 2-3 years. For the first time ever, I had planned to upgrade my year old phone (I got the X) to the newest model. But no more. Other than the larger screen, there's nothing new this year I can't do without. I can keep my X another year, then it's mine instead of having to trade it in. I'll have a much better test phone next year for the iOS 13 beta (I used my old 6 Plus this year). Hopefully next year's lineup will be more enticing.

All due respect, that's simply not true. I work in IT and this phone is my lifeline for my career. I can remote to any PC/server in the entire organization, check email, run scripts, fix issues of nearly any sort, etc. If I get a call from one of our automated notifications at 3am because a server went down, I don't even have to get out of bed anymore to get another device. I can answer the call, log in to the server, fix the problem, email/text/call anyone else involved, and all of this can be done on the same device.

Yes, the cost is almost ridiculous... but this device is a massive convenience for me and it's definitely not for Social Media.

Exactly this. In fact, I’d wager that “phone” is one of the least-used functions.

100% agree it’s more than a phone but it’s definitely not worth 1k. When someone comes along and can best Apple at a lower price point we may see better prices. Until then, if you want what Apple makes, you gotta pay the tax.

Saying it’s just a phone is disingenuous. You know full well it’s much more than that.
That’s missing the point. The iPhone 5s was also much more than a phone, and it started at $650 when it was apple’s top of the line flagship.

5 years later and the top of the line is $450 more, and even the “budget” model is $100 more.

They’re boiling us like a frog in a pot of water, and we’re happy with how nice and warm the water feels.

again, 1,100$ for a phone (basic configuration...). For a device that in 2 years will be slow and unusable...
Yes, it will be slower than the model down the road, but why do you say unstable? I'm using a 6S and it is slow, but not unstable.

If I had a choice to buy $1,100 smartphone or $300 regular phone, so yes I’ll pay $1,100. The thing is that the competition is very strong and offer more or less the same package for half the price.
Yes, we all love iOS, and the iPhone’s processor is something out of space etc., but in the end of the day, it’s a phone which we will replace in 2-3 years (either because it’s slow / don’t support new features or because we just want the next year’s model...).
Last year Apple threw experimental balloon with the $1,000 iPhone X and saw that people are willing to pay any price, so they continue (BTW, I bought iPhone 8 Plus last year in order “not to cooperate”, but it seems that enough people bought the X...).
If we’ll be honest, there is no justification for $1,100 price tag (especially when we compare to Samsung’s note...)

The "low cost" iPhone XR base model would be priced at 1068 USD over here which is not exactly affordable.

The death of contracts didn't help anyone but the carriers. We all pay the same or more as we did before, but now we have less flexibility. Carriers don't care how much the phones cost anymore because they aren't paying for the phones anymore. The carriers before were the customers, they had a ton of buying power with Apple and could force major downward pressure on price.

How strange that once contracts died, iPhones suddenly jumped in price from $499 all the way up to $750 in just a few generations for the base model, and up from there. Samsung users have experienced the same skyrocketing pricing as well.
Two year contracts are very much alive and popular outside of America I can assure you. If contracts didn’t exist in Europe, everybody would be buying £200 phones.

I prefer two year contracts to spread the cost. I wouldn’t dream of paying £1000 outright for a mobile phone otherwise.

£1249 actually! And I've never bought on contract. I prefer paying up front.

This. Apple have continued to increase the price of their handsets and seen people will still find a way to buy it.
That's sound business sense. They weren't the worlds first trillion dollar company for nothing.
Of course we would all live to be buying this phone for £500!

I had a suspicion Apple would get ridiculous for 2018 with the bigger X price. In 2017 I got an 8+ 256 or myself and X 256 for the wife. My game plan is stay one year behind going forward and cut upgrade costs. If Apple pulls shenanigans next year and discontinues the 2018 model to keep prices inflated I will likely return to android.

This is what I should do. Must. Resist. Haha

Pricing us crazy. I do not ubderstand storage issue though. I have a 64 gb iphone 6s and have 42 gb free. Btw, huawei p20 pro was 1200 $ at launch

Your missing an incredible point and that point is that Samsung allows expanded memory so realistic the 64gb would be 256gb if you had expanded memory. And you also leaving out you can get bogos on Samsung phones. And please don’t go the route of Apple is better or premium that’s why no bogos

$1100 for iPhone...………..is it worth it ? there is no real answer.
Its a premium phone, top of the line, that next year will be old technology.
Its more of paying for what you love be it a car or iPhone or a $700 pair of sneakers

I think I will pass this one, will use my 4s for another year. It still calls and sends messages, no problem

Another important thing to think about for those who upgrade every few years is that 5G is just around the corner, which means either the next iPhone or the one in 2020 will have 5G and require another upgrade, and any iPhone without 5G radios will drop in value. None of these will be good longevity phones.

It is not a phone, it is „my precious” for many people, it is life, it is everything!

Last year I bought the 8 plus as well, not to go on a protest, but to not be the user of a first generation product.

Value of anything is subjective. People spend way more for a Bugatti or a Ferrari. And the competition argument is even worse in that industry.

Personally, I don’t think any company will ever price me out in terms of smartphones but then it also depends on if I deem it to be “worthy”.

I paid $999 for my first MacBook about 8 years ago. I had terrible buyers remorse lol. It’s crazy how little $1k gets you these days.

I just saw the prices for the Xs Max with 512GB here in Germany it’s 1649€ that’s almost 2000$. Even if you only go with the 256gb it’s still 1419€.

I understand that Apple, as the king, can charge whatever they want and people will pay for it.

I also understand that it’s not just a phone, but a mini computer for your pocket to take everywhere you want, but what the hell... Where is this going to end? Eventually only the richest of the rich will be able to buy one, if they keep going higher and higher.

Once my iPhone 7 with 32Gb dies I’ll go with something much cheaper.

I think all of us could do with a bit less screen time (I know there’s days where I spend 9hrs on my phone) anyways and reflect on how insane this has gotten.
2000$ for a phone that will be ‘meh’ by next year (when they present new phones), not because it’s not going to run anymore, but because people always want more and bigger and better..

Would you pay 5000$ for a phone in 5 yrs, I wonder?!

I see it this way that phone is with you day and night and gets the most usage of anything you have so paying for something that is used so much it's getting it's value worth
