Several Micro Center locations still have 6-Core units for sale (MD878LL/A). Reduced to $1899.99 now with some deals on open box units too. The Dallas store has one for $1,499.96.

There's a used 8-Core/D700 unit on eBay for $1,989.99. Looks like it's a 2014 build based on the serial, but not a bad deal with a 1 year vendor warranty. https://www.ebay.com/itm/283895671922 Edit: Korican100 pointed out it might have a D500 plus a D700 GPU. Better ask the seller for clarification.

Those are decent prices, but the exchange rate just kills it for me. The Canadian Dollar’s fallen so much these last few years...

I often wonder if this is really worth it? It’s 2014 build. So assuming Apple will support it for 10 years (OS wise). You got about four more years out of it at 2024. Or go for a new Mac Pro with easily student discount for $5500 and 10 years of support and warranty. Both comes out to be about the same on a dollar/year breakdown. Okay $50 more for the new Mac Pro. But I think it’s worth it. I get that $3k difference is no small sum. But so is $2k with limited Apple support.

That particular unit appears to be 2014. Apple made these into 2019 and stopped selling them 6 months ago. It's hard to say how many years of OS support there will be. If Apple totally transitions to ARM then the 7,1 wouldn't be any more of a smarter purchase, especially at the higher price. Unless of course one's tasks require the extra capability.

Okay. What you said makes sense. I forgot the fact they made/sell them until quite recently. In that case these are probably a good buy. Thanks for the reminder.

It's a shame Apple didn't punt the 2013 Mac Pro down market by switching to a core i9 and thunderbolt 3 when the new Mac Pro came out. A smallish desktop like that with lower powered components might have done alright.

That would have been nice if they kept it around with updated specs. Maybe the Xeon W-1200 or W-2200 series CPUs and dual Radeon Pro 580 or W5500 GPUs. If they can make the W5500s work within the thermal constraints of a laptop, I’m sure the 6,1 thermal design wouldn’t be a problem for them.

Too much wishful thinking, no?

If the rumour mill is right, seems so but WWDC'20 will confirm it or not, Apple will be transitioning to ARM within months, why invest on updating MP6,1?

Apple has not even updated the 2018 mini to current i3/i5/i7 processors, a Mac that probably sells 10x the MP6,1 numbers and it's a lot simpler hardware wise to update to current specs.

Same reason for wanting to get a G4 Cube or the G4 iMac I guess. The current trashcan is also still pretty capable. We're using one to edit a 4K film and despite its age, it's a beast.

I'm trying to get one myself.

Sure, never questioned the MP6,1 utility. My point is why Apple should upgrade MP6,1 after MP7,1 was released and months before the transition to ARM.

Apple never will get the ROI spent updating MP6,1 to current specs, like they probably never got the ROI implementing PowerPC 970MP (the dual core models) for the late-2005 Power Macs G5 that were released months after Intel announcement at WWDC'05 and were sold for less than 10 months.

I'm not saying they should update the 6,1 now. I was speculating what they could have done. It would be neat if they released something similar in the future with the new ARM architecture though.

just saw this on ebay.

Does anyone have a pov on upgraded 3.3ghz 8 core, over the 3.0ghz 8 core the seller stated in the description?

I assumed the listing was just funky and it has D700s, but it could have one of each if someone swapped one. You never know. I guess I would ask the seller for clarification.

Some people upgrade a 4 or 6 core system to the 3.3GHz 8-Core because it's a little faster, but I would personally stick to the 3.0GHz because it doesn't run as hot and it's only 100MHz slower on TurboBoost. The performance is very close between them, within the range of silicon quality.

I just got one on eBay yesterday and I’m waiting for it to come. I’ve wanted one since I first saw the preview at WWDC 2013, and I’m going to attempt to replace my 5,1 with it. It’s a D500 and I feel like I got a good deal. I grabbed it right after it listed. I also picked up an e5-2697 v2 for about $185 so I’ll upgrade it to 12 core.

Edit: I just looked up the serial number online and it shows a manufacture date of February, 2015. That puts it right in the recall date... should I be concerned?

That’s awesome! It’s hard to say how much of a concern the GPUs are. The D500s appear to be the least likely to have issues, but Apple did identify problems with them manufactured during that period. There’s a chance they’ve been replaced already. Newer ones have a larger head screw on the SSD. I don’t know if Apple will honor the recall still. Maybe they will. You might also think about grabbing one from an authorized reseller so you can get AppleCare+. The extra cost is worth the piece of mind IMO.

Yeah, I live near 3 micro centers and occasionally will scan their inventory and saw that there are several new units for 1899. I’m actually tempted to snag a new one just for collectors value.

Oh man. Three of them? The nearest Apple Store is a 2.5 hour drive away. Luckily there's a couple of authorized resellers that are closer, but none that would carry anything like a Mac Pro...

Same here. I’m in Savannah Georgia, and the closest Apple Store is a couple hours away in Charleston South Carolina. There is a Best Buy and an authorized reseller, but neither of them would have a Mac Pro in stock.

Yeah I live in DC there are 3 within 30 minutes. If anyone is interested there are two open box 2013 Mac Pro for 1649.00 and one new for 1899. I can get it for anyone, all you would have to do is pay shipping and PayPal fees. I always love an excuse to visit microcenter.

If warranty is expired on the open boxes all you would have to do is submit receipt to Apple and they will adjust the warranty. Ive bought several open box iPads from Microcenter that had 3-6 months of original apple warranty and I submitted the receipt to Apple saying I bought it on such and such day and they adjusted the date to reflect 12 months of Apple warranty remaining, at that point I was able to buy AppleCare+.

So either way, you’d have 3 years of AppleCare+ on the open boxes.

That's really super nice TrevorR90!

Here's a tip if you purchase one of the discounted open box units. When you call Apple to validate the purchase date and get AppleCare+ they'll often ask if it's been returned or refurbished, etc. Even though Micro Center states the full manufacturer's warranty applies to open box and display/demo units it sounds like Apple might be reluctant to update the purchase date on those. So just say it's new so there are no questions about it. If you can get Micro Center to update the purchase date with Apple for you while you're still in the store that would be even better.
