I'm just scared issues could pop up any time.
This happens with any electronics, not just screens. That’s the reason why I have AppleCare on my XDR, will continue to pay for it every year because I expect to use it at least 10 years. I plan to get a second XDR, this way I’m safe at least screen will work every time. You could get an additional used Ultrafine, if your work is vital.

After 3 years, you can continue to pay yearly.
Not in The Netherlands. 3 years it is. Then you’ll need to sell it and buy a new product.

My Pro Display XDR is covered till November under normal warranty. In the US and Canada you can bring it in to an Apple Store, have it checked and get Apple Care a year after buying it.

Not in The Netherlands. You’ll have to get coverage within 60 days or you are too late forever.

I did not know that, I’m in Canada. I just called Apple and asked if there is a limitation extending yearly the AppleCare, after the 3yrs period. They told me currently there is not, and provided me with this link:
Your plan coverage may continue beyond 24 or 36 months, on a monthly or annual basis, until canceled.
Technically, I can renew my AppleCare indefinitely, on a yearly basis. However, they told me Apple can change this decision whenever they feel like.

I also asked Apple if I can add AppleCare+ on a used XDR, still under initial one year warranty. They told me I cannot add AppleCare after the initial 60days purchase period, check the How to Buy section. Where did you get that information about inspecting the display in an Apple store? Maybe the technical support was not aware of this policy. If you have an official link, it will be useful.

When I bought a Pro Display XDR in the US in June I had the option to get AppleCare+ at $499 for 3 years or $179.99 per year until I would cancel it.

Apple US web site says you can buy AppleCare+ within 60 days of your Apple display purchase.

[edited to add] I see @Tech covered these details

PS - near the bottom of the link in my post it mentions inspection at an Apple Store within 60 days of purchase. Look for "How to Buy".

Yes, same thing for Canada and probably the rest of the world where AppleCare is available. It means I have to get an used XDR that already has AppleCare, like my current XDR does, in order to be able to extend it.

Exactly. Also, the yearly renewal is not available in Netherlands. Only here:

In Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States

So every 3 years I kick out the devices that don’t have Apple Care anymore, with exception on the Pro Display XDR. It just stands in front of me on my desk. I don’t have much worries about it. The iPhone and MacBook Pro is a different story, as I take those devices out of the house.

Also:

  • In some countries and regions, you can buy an AppleCare Protection Plan within 1 year of your purchase of an eligible Mac, Apple TV, or other device.
Not sure which countries those are.

Also I wonder if there is some confusion in this thread. Isn't the basic 1 year warranty a different and separate thing from “AppleCare+”, which provides extended coverage? (both in terms of length of time and the type of coverage provided)?

I’ll happily be wrong but I haven’t heard of Apple selling AppleCare+ to anyone other than the original purchaser of the Apple product in question. Now if you bought one second hand that has an AppleCare+ plan associated with it (not the standard AppleCare warranty but the expanded AppleCare+ coverage), I could see apple allowing the current owner to continue that coverage beyond what was originally purchased 🤷🏻‍♂️

The list you linked includes the Pro Display XDR (Look below the Apple Watches). Whether that list is accurate, however, I can’t say.
You’re right, I missed that. So technically I could purchase AppleCare+ for a used XDR, if is still under first year default warranty? When I talked to Apple today, they had no idea what I’m talking about.

Yes, my goal is see if I can get AppleCare+ on an used XDR screen that is still under initial 1yr warranty. For example, I buy a 6months used XDR and I call Apple to purchase AppleCare. If anyone has more info on this, it will be helpful. With the release of the new 7K XDR, I have a feeling we will see quite a few used 6K XDRs for sale, still under initial warranty. I think I’ll try to score another one with AppleCare already purchased, so I don’t have to worry about any surprises.

To transfer the AppleCare to my name, I did a 3-way conference call with previous owner and Apple Support, so they can hear the original owner saying he agrees to transfer it under my Apple ID. They checked his info, like name and address, then 10min later I got an automated email from Apple with all the AppleCare details, XDR serial number and agreement. So now I show like being the original XDR purchaser, with the AppleCare agreement assigned to my Apple ID. That email is the only proof I have being the XDR+AppleCare owner. I did called 5 days later to double check Apple did not messed anything and they confirmed AppleCare was successfully transferred under my Apple ID, but there is no way to verify it on my side, it will not show any details that I own the XDR or related AppleCare under my Apple ID products or services. Apple’s serial number service check will not give you any details who’s the actual owner.

Yeah initially I was putting the XDR in my cart and there was no option to add the VESA mount adapter even though it still appears in the flow on that page. There’s even a third party VESA adapter that seems to no longer be available as of the last week or so. (Made by HumanCentric. I’ve emailed them to see what their story is.)

Definitely gives me a tiny bit of pause about ordering. Not really expecting a replacement imminently but maybe it’s closer than I had guessed?

Are there any details as to OEM panels that would be a candidate for an XDR-2? I’m not aware of any that offer a combination of resolution, color accuracy and price that move the needle but I’m probably out of the loop on latest and greatest tech.

Yeah I’m probably even more out of the loop than you are. So, the XDR VESA adapter is finally back on Apple.com in the US. But, overnight the Pro Display XDR appears to have had its delivery window pushed back by 6-7 weeks— went from Sept 1 delivery to October 20. Anyone in other markets seeing that as well? Seems a little curious to me. Maybe it’s a supply chain issue.

Just checked and it's available for me (east coast of US) for Sept 1 delivery...

Very random question, but can some test if the Pro Display XDR works without the stand or vesa mount attached?
Sure. When I bought my B-Stock Pro Display XDR, I first tested it for dead pixels laying on my bed without a stand or VESA. So yes, it will work perfectly. I wouldn’t recommend to use it without a stand or VESA, though.

Last week my Pro Display XDR went black. It won't turn on again, I have tried this on my two MacBooks + iPad.

(please note, that I always have to unplug the power cable on the back of the display, wait 20 sec while having the Thunderbolt cable still connected to the MacBooks, plug the power cable back in, to see the following)
  • MBP M2 Max 96GB 4TB 2023 Ventura 13.5.1 see following video.

The Display shows up twice for about 1 second, but the display stays dark. The weird thing is, that the display charges the MacBook.
  • MBP 2019 2,4 i9 64GB on Ventura 13.4
After connecting the MacBook, the display turns black 2-3 times for 1–2 seconds, as it seems like it's trying to connect to the display. The MacBook can also draw power from the display.

See the following video:

Also tried to connect to my iPad - nothing happens, but the iPad is also charging.

What I have tried:
  1. Different cables and ports on both the Display and the two MacBooks.
  2. "Detect Displays" with the "option" button in display.
  3. SMC / NVRAM reset on both MacBooks. (on the M2 a simple reboot should do that)
  4. Unplug the display for 10, 30 or 60 seconds + also overnight.
  5. Starting the MacBooks in safe mode.
  6. Restarting both MacBooks.
It seems pretty obvious, to me, that the problem is not with the devices connected to the display (since all the three devices don't start the display) but the display itself. The weird thing to me is, that the devices can still draw power from the display.

Of course, my $6000 display is out of warranty. I actually cannot believe it just died like that. I opened the package in December 2019, and it never left its spot on my desk since then.

Does anyone else have an idea what to do or something to try out?

What makes me think a bit is the different reaction of my two MacBooks (see videos above).
I'll be at the Genius bar in Stuttgart next week to have them check it. I am really curious about how they treat this out-of-warranty case since it's such an expensive device. Does anyone have experience with such a case?

Thanks for any kind of help in advance.

Kind regards from Germany!

Please update us. My Pro Display XDR is also out of warranty and I'm worried what happens if it fails

Just got home from the Apple Store. They couldn't check it with me in the store but said they would call me within a week. The guy at the Genius Bar said that they had a similar case a couple of weeks ago and just had to change the main board to get it fixed. On the way home, my phone rang and they said they were unable to find an issue with the software or cables and the only possibility was to replace the display itself. They said it would cost me $2500. I have now asked to talk to the manager and I am waiting for his call.
It is a joke that a $6500 display, that has never been moved after opening, stops working after just 3,5 years. If the manager is unable to offer another solution to this, I'll be extremely pissed. May probably end up taking the replacement for $2500, but will sell that piece right away (since I can sell it for more than the $2500) and will look for another display.

But definitely I will never ever end up getting another Display or similar from Apple.

I think people buying the XDR Display are very likely "high revenue" customers of Apple, spending a lot more than the average customer. Pissing those people off is just a bad business move, but I get that Apple doesn't have to care about that at all.

So everyone be prepared, that it is possible that a $6500 display stops working after 3 years and you will be forced to pay at least $2500 for a fix.

Addition 1: So I also called Apple and the agent was kind enough to check the case, took about 10 min of waiting until he delivered the gut punching news: There was nothing he could do for me. His supervisor would not approve a cheaper or free option. Just so disappointing. I get a new MBP every 2-3 years, a new iPhone every 1-2 years and Watch every 2-3 years. A big middle finger for me with really the first issue I had since owning my first iMac in 2007. So I am most likely forced to pay another 2,5K.

I have now lost a lot of faith in Apple.

Sorry to hear - this is rubbish, and a sad reminder of how Apple has changed over the last few decades.
