May be I am missing something, but so far I do not understand the difference between push gmail which is set up using Exchange and what I have used so far - IMAP.

In both cases I am getting a badge and a sound.

Also I am a bit confused on the settings:

I have turned on PUSH, but below it says fetch - every 15 min, 30 etc. I am not sure how to properly set up push gmail - does the fetch still have to be set say for 15 mins?

It is my understanding that if you have push enabled, you don't have to fetch anymore. So, leave fetch off and keep push on.

Each account will show either FETCH or PUSH next to it in the mail setup/settings area. If you have only 1 account and it uses only push, turn off fetch. If you have OTHER accounts that do not use push but fetch instead, the setting still applies to them and should stay on.

This is what I am noticing.

I am getting a new message sound and the badge updates when a new message comes in but the message itself is not being downloaded/pushed. I noticed this as when I go into the mail app after getting the message sound and the message is not in there. I see that the mail app starts checking the server and then in turn pulls the message.

Anyone else seeing this?

To clarify, I have gone in and enabled the mail for push.

Thanks

As I understand, you are referring to a setting:

Fetch New Data -> Advanced -> Gmail. Here I see fetch and manual. So do I set this to manual?

same here

Yeah, I agree. If you are already using the Exchange connector (as I) then you're out of luck.

The Palm Pre has a seperate mail setting for GMail push. So, it doesn't need to use the Exchange connection. That's the way Apple should have done it.

Correct. It all depends on whether the account is Push or Fetch. Each account pretty much knows what it is and will set it self accordingly. So if you don't want any fetch going on, set that option at ..

Mail-> Fetch New Data -> Fetch ( 15, 30, Hour, Man.). This will set ALL fetch accounts to whatever you set it for here. For each individual account, you can only set Fetch, Manual or Push from that area you are talking about.

The servers must be getting slammed. It is very slow at the moment. Other than that, seems to be working fine.

Also, I was only able to get mine working using my account name without the @gmail.com.

Did you add the exchange account or are you trying to convert your old Gmail account? You can't convert your old account. If you haven't setup a new exchange account, then you need to follow the directions on the Google site. Otherwise, you will lose all your contacts.

Well, in this advanced area I do not see option for push, only fetch and manual. I only see option to turn push on globally

I keep getting the "Exchange account verification failed" message when I try to set it up. Bummer. Their servers must be getting smashed right now.

I don't see anything that says this is in beta.

When you get that message did a box labeled "server" come up? If you see a box labeled server it should read m.google.com. Then see if it works.

A message that I received about 20 minutes ago in my inbox just got pushed to my iPhone. When I originally tested it out, the message appeared almost instantly.

Also, if you are getting account verify failed, try your user name without the "@gmail.com" in the user name field. The instructions showed the full email address as the user name, but that didn't work for me. Just using my user name did work.

I actually got it working now. Well, sort of. Half the time it will load my emails, the other half it doesn't. Probably just more server problems

All I get is a sound that the message comes in and the badge does update but is there a way to get a visual push notification about the mail, or do I still need gpush or prowl to do something like that?

You could jailbreak and get GriP. :D This is just push email like yahoo has. Otherwise you'll need Gpush or something.

EDIT: Not Growl, it's actually GriP :D

I think you are confused about what "push" means - it simply refers to the method by which the email is actually delivered to your phone. Apple's mail client will visually notify you of new messages with the mail alert sound (which you can only turn on or off, not change) and a badge. There are no other notification options unless you use a 3rd party app that will deliver them to you.

I have finally set up the exchange account. Now it says the "server connection failed". Is that related to server being overloaded?

under advanced settings you will see the sync account just set it to push, it does not matter what time frame you have fetch set to, that only tells it how often to run. Under the actual email account is where you tell it to push, fetch, or manual

Push is working for me but slow, probably due to the servers getting slammed. I actually prefer the push gmail app with a preview bubble, plus it has an option to open the native mail app anyways. That was working much faster then the exchange server.
