I have a couple of questions that maybe someone can answer.

1 - Why is the drafts folder down at the bottom and a folder and not up top like on the imap?

2 - What is the darn [GMAIL] tree thing? Why does that show up on imap and exchange? Yet other folders show up regularly? I don't get any of that. Anyway to fix that?

Well I have a couple answers! :D

The Drafts are not supported at this moment. Listed in known issues on the Google page.

Also, it's just the way the Gmail server saves it's folders. The iPhone just takes the [Gmail]/Inbox and uses that as Inbox, etc.

I wish it would only use the folders that are shown with IMAP because I use the Advanced IMAP Google Labs plugin and I have the All Mail folder hidden.

They'll sort it out eventually. I'll stick to IMAP for now. :D

Yeah, I saw the drafts thing in the known issues area. I did read that after I posted. As for the push setup, I got rid of it and decided to keep imap instead until the bugs are worked out.

So there is no way to get rid of the [gmail], folder, folder, folder tree? It's just odd that it's right in the middle of all the other folders and the same folders that should be in that tree are not, but are inline with the inbox instead. Hmm.

You can do that with IMAP by adding "[Gmail]" to IMAP Path Prefix in the Advanced screen. Doesn't look like there's such a setting under Exchange.

So, I have been using Google Sync for my contacts and calendar for a while now and now I switched on Mail and not only is it not pushing my mail, but its not doing my calendar either... WTF? I really hope it's because the Google Servers are all backed up.... Would anyone concur?

I think you are confused about what "push" means - it simply refers to the method by which the email is actually delivered to your phone. Apple's mail client will visually notify you of new messages with the mail alert sound (which you can only turn on or off, not change) and a badge. There are no other notification options unless you use a 3rd party app that will deliver them to you.

I think you are confused about what "visually" means. You cannot visually notify me of anything with a sound.

I tried that. After adding it, the only thing that now shows up is the inbox. Sent, trash, drafts and any label folders are gone.

Touché ;) .. I meant that it will not visually notify you with a "popup" text alert like when you get an SMS.

It started acting up on my iPhone and saying it couldn't connect to the server, so I changed back to normal Google Mail.

Maybe I'll give this another go once Google Sync is out of beta.

The only thing you don't get as of now is a pop up, like a preview or message saying new email. Besides your problem not getting badges everyone should get a badge and a sound.

Setting up a new account doesn't change how the default mail app works. There is nothing google can change to get notifactions like this to work. Apple's mail app doesn't have this functionality built in to do it like the SMS/MMs app does.

Google Sync works fine, but every iPhone Gmail user in the universe is attempting to log in and download their entire Gmail inbox to their phones at the moment. If you wait until things calm down I imagine you'll find things working a lot more smoothly.

The new gmail push feature is great for not having to manually fetch your gmail, but it doesn't give an alert or badge to let you know you have mail.

I've been using pushmail from the app store and it gives an almost instant notification that you have new mail. The benefit of the new push feature on gmail is that a manual retrieval of your new mail is not necessary and you can turn off fetch in your email settings.

This is exactly the case. However, many iPhone users will invariably believe that it should just work for them because they're on an iPhone. :p

There's no pop-up but it still uses a badge and will alert you as you define in the ringtone settings.

Me: "What do you mean the server can't handle it? Nonsense, it can and it will!"

Google: "no, it can't be done, there are laws of physics involved here"

Me: (after some insense thinking) "then you're all fired, and your boss is fired too"

Google: "but our boss isn't even here"

Me: "I don't care, just get out, and tell the guys on the way out to hire a team that can make my vision a reality!"

(readers of FSJ should get that :p)

I have this set up on my phone now and I'm experiencing some weird things. I sent myself a test email from my MobileMe account to my gmail account. That email popped up on my iphone just seconds after it popped up in my mail app on my Mac. I read the email on my phone and deleted it from my inbox. I then checked the Trash on my phone (there are two different trash folders for some reason) and the message was nowhere to be found. I then checked my mail app on my Mac and the message was nowhere to be found even though it was there before I read it and deleted from the inbox on my iphone.

I then sent another test email from my MobileMe account to my gmail account. This time it popped up on my phone seconds before it showed up in my mail app on my Mac. This time I read the message on my Mac but did not remove it from my Inbox (basically, I just marked the message as read). Shortly thereafter, the message was marked as read on my iphone as well (I assume that's expected behavior). I then moved the message on my Mac from the Inbox to the trash the message is completely gone from my phone. Isn't it supposed to be in one of the Trash folders on my phone as well?

Also, if I reply to a message from my phone, shouldn't the sent item show up in my mail app on my Mac as well?

I think the servers are getting hammered, I can't even download folders right now. Anyone else having issues?

Yes as wel have all been all day. The servers are getting hammered is an understatement, but it is working best it can and I think it is positive right now.

It's been a little iffy for me since I set it up at 2 PM today. But compared to the initial MobileMe launch, this is an absolute dream :)

I am tempted to switch back to IMAP as of right now I am not getting any emails. When I go to inbox on iphone it tells me checking for mail and nothing happens. I did download some e-mails and I thought it is working now, but as of 4 pm still no consistency. However I find it convenient that I can select for how many days do I want to see the mails and push of course. I guess since servers are being slow, I will wait for a bit longer before killing exchange account

Seems to be murdering my battery...anyone else?

Yes, I have MobileMe Push enabled in addition to setting upthe Gmail Exchange, it seemed to deplete from 50% to 30% in 20 minutes. It could just be the mail client polling, but geez!

Yeah, I had MobileMe for a while and Push never destroyed my battery this badly. Maybe it's because of the server issues Google's undoubtedly experiencing right now.

this is sweet. 1 thing i noticed for anyone else out there having issues. i was testing by sending from my gmail account on my laptop. it wasnt working. so i logged into my isp account on the web and instant push. so if you are testing using a gmail account, try another if you have one.

now if they would only sync contacts using groups i would be set. baby steps i guess
