Thanks for the updated post.

Now I'm using a 3G with JB OS 3.1.2 and have it unlocked using ultrasn0w (04.26.08 modem firmware). Have been using the phone in a foreign country and it was awesome. Tethering also works after you apply the patch for 3.1.2, I have verified that after I returned to US.

Have a 3g iphone for last two years, thinking about unlocking it. What are the benefits and if i decide to do it how should i open it? Buy through a website or do it myself? confused.... just looking for the best answer

thanks

DIY. But, make sure you satisfy the requirements of PwnageTool 3.1.4.

Here's a question I'm a little confused about, I unlocked my 1st Gen with Pwnagetool at OS 3.0, can I let itunes upgrade it to 3.1.2 and it stay unlocked or do I need to use pwnagetool for every upgrade?

thx man, tonight I upgraded my jailbroken 1.1.4 to 2.0.2 then QuickPwn'd it. Very simple process!

Sorry this is probably a really dumb question, but with downloading this, i can upgrade my ipod from first gen software to second?

Error 1603/1604 - 160? something

IF YOU ARE RESTORING TO A STANDARD APPLE FIRMWARE *NOT CUSTOM FIRMWARE"

This error is down to itunes not liking your USB ports on your computer. Use a different USB slot or a different computer if possible. That is the easiest fix!

IF YOU ARE RESTORING TO A CUSTOM FIRMWARE AFTER RESTORING FROM STANDARD APPLE FIRMWARE

IF you have pwned your phone once and then restored back to apple original firmware successfully and THEN tried to restore custom firmware you WILL get
an error in iTunes as the apple firmware "unpawned" your phone. You have to repwn it using iPwner and then you can restore using custom firmware.

IF YOU ARE RESTORING TO CUSTOM FIRMWARE AND YOUR PHONE IS STILL PWNED

See "if your restoring to apple firmware" above as it is the same issue.

BootNeuter Error 5: This is because you upgraded to the 2.0 beta firmware without unlocking first in 1.1.4 like your supposed to. You will have to restore to 1.1.4 unlocked and then delete the 2.0 baseband. You can do this by adding iclarified to the installer sources (as explained in the localization part below) then select "Delete 1.2 Baseband" - install that and let it delete your baseband. You MUST then restore to 1.1.4 apple original firmware and then re-pwn your phone and restore to 1.1.4 custom unlocked before BootNeuter will work again.

I got error 1604 on my first time pwning my iPod touch. I went through Pwnagetool - I used simple mode, it found my ipsw, then installed the basic stuff, and then told me to quit Pwnagetool, enter recovery mode on my iPod, and then open iTunes and restore to the custom. When I'm restoring, it just say some error occurred (1604) and asks if I want to get more information or just quit.
Help plz?

Same with me!
The only thing I can think of for you is that I heard you can't use PWNage tool to jailbreak iPod Touch 3G. Thought that was what was in your sig, but I didn't see..

unlocked

ok, I had the first generation iphone and gave it away because I refused to pay at&t's ridiculous prices. now that there is all of these new jailbroken and unlocked iphones, someone help me understand something.

1. Is it better to buy one and unlock it yourself, or buy one already unlocked?
2. once you have an unlocked iphone, who is the best service to go with? I see t-mobile has unlimited talk, text, web for 79.99. is that the same as data?
or do you purchase a talk and text plan, then a data plan?

if "you" have an unlocked iphone...what plan do "you" have?

3. does "unlocking" work on all models? 3g, 3gs, ect.?

You cant go to the apple store and buy an iphone without a plan. I would find a friend who is selling theres and buy it and then jailbreak it. That's what i did. Its hard to find one online that is under $250.

So Frustrated!

Ok, I have read so many threads my head is about to explode. Someone please help. I bought an iPhone from a friend here (not in the US) who already had it unlocked to work here in our country (iPhones not available here). Told me "No matter what you do, dont update it" Well, by accident I did.

I have tried Redsnow, Blackrain, etc etc & still all I have on the iPhone is the USB & the iTunes logo. iTunes is showing "sim card inserted in the phone does not appear to be supported".

I have a PC running Vista (yes I ran Redsnow as administrator & Windows XP compatibility)
My 8gb iPhone is silver on the back (so I assumed 3G).
I tried the 'unplug the cable' when it stuck on "Waiting to reboot", I tried rebooting manually, everything ended with the same logo on screens & the same message on iTunes.

Can someone please help before I throw it in the ocean!

Question:

Taking my 3GS to the Apple Store tomorrow for the case cracking. I'm on 3.1.2 right now, but not sure if I'll get a 3.1.2 phone tomorrow. I can't downgrade on the 3GS can I? And if not is Pwnage tool my only choice for jailbreak then?

16GB iPhone 3GS

Version 3.1.2

Model MC131

Which program should I use to JB it, Blackra1n or Pwnage Tool? Is it as simple as running the program, or do I have to do something specific before I run one of the two programs?

quickpwn and upgrading

my 3g iPhone is jailbroken and unlocked for my boyfriend to use. He's used it since the day I got my 3gs. problem is that is freezes up constantly and its ultra SLOW! so, I know I should just restore it and re-jailbrake it (at least that's my solution) but I used a quickpwn tool for iphone 3.0 software. I know that its finally been upgraded but I want to make sure I do everything properly.

Any tips???

any advantage to unlocking again?

I unlocked a while ago, am on a 3G with 3.0.1. Is there any advantage/new functionality to unlock again to 3.1.2 (?). Since then, there seems to be many ways to unlock: snow, rain,..... is there a comprehensive guide on which tool to use these days? very confusing for someone jumping back into it. Have cydia installed already......

Hi guys,

I've decided I fancy jailbreaking my iPhone 3G for the first time since i'm close to the end of my contract and out of warranty anyway! I've searched and searched but can't find a decent answer as to the best way to go about jailbreaking an iPhone 3G running firmware 3.1.3 for the first time?

Any help would be amazingly appreciated.

Cheers guys.

@Chappy87 - I am with you.. 3G 3.1.3 I am looking to jailbreak as well. I m finding a LOT of great information, but it's been built up over so many years, it's hard to tell what is possible or even the "best" way.

Quick update.

There is NO jailbreak or unlock for phones on 3.1.3.

You have 2 options to jailbreak/unlock on 3.1.2

Pwnagetool: http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/376648600/pre-game-show
Which lets you make a custom firmware.

or

Blackrain: http://blackra1n.com/
This is the EASIEST MOST BASIC METHOD It will upload itself to the phone and then jailbreak it and then all you have to do is click the logo to install Cydia and/or unlock.

If you upgrade to 3.1.3 by accident you MAY be able to downgrade back to 3.1.2 for the purpose of jailbreaking but you will still not be able to unlock the phone as you were on 3.1.3 before.

Hope that helps!

So if I'm on 3.0.1 and use blackrain, all I do is push a button or two and it will upgrade to 3.1.2 and unlock again?
TIA
