Actually, for those who I know who have spent over thousand dollars on the iPhone X, have not even commented on the notch one way or the other. Why? Because they don't care. They just want to use the phone for what it is and they don't need or have to justify anything other than what they like about the phone for themselves. It's a piece of tech, not a long-term investment.
I think if you are willing to buy the X then you must be accepting of the notch.

The true depth camera area is Correct. Apple is worth a trillion dollars. They know what they are doing.

If you are on macrumors you are an Apple fan hence an iPhone X fan hence a 2007 iPhone Bluetooth headset fan hence a notch fan hence a $14k iMac pro fan

Not necessarily. There are plenty of users on this forum who don’t want the X for various reasons. Some of them are primarily android users.

There are plenty of iPhone users on here like myself who don’t have an X or want one at this point. I didn’t like the first iPhone either and snubbed it completely until the iPhone 4. This site is made up of all sorts including who were once iPhone users but have migrated to Android. It would be pretty dull if we all liked exactly the same products.

Good for them this website is for Apple sheep only

Apparently it's for very bitter Android owners as well. It's what happens when people are priced-out of a superior product from Apple and forced to accept a budget model from OnePlus (who?).

I don’t think one plus are that cheap anymore, their prices are more mid range. The budget handsets would be the Moto G’s and some of the Chinese brands.

I have no idea about anything Android outside of a 7 minute Top Smartphones of 2017 video I watched on YouTube today and I wasted that 7 minutes only because I wanted to see what the Android people flooding this forum were going on and on about. This so called "innovation" coming from the Android world.

And what I found out confirmed everything I always suspected. Apple owners know nothing of Android, would never consider an Android, and aren't missing out on anything. Androids are designed for poor people and high school gamers. Giant speakers and screens for watching movies, big chins and foreheads for gaming, big heavy batteries. They're some high school kids bedroom TV replacement. They're not serious devices for the executive workplace.

The root cause of all this anti-Apple angst is misplaced anger. Instead of being angry at the carriers who dropped their subsidies and ended the no-cost iPhone every two years game, they think Apple is the one who raised prices, took away their BMW's, and put them in a Kia.

Indeed. I’ve got to say I know only a handful of people on Android but they are all the high end flagship devices. I find the carriers and retailers tend to push the flagships whereas the more budget devices less so because they don’t make enough money on them. My boss is a life long Apple user and this year decided to try the S8. So far it’s working for him and it feels like a very high quality device. Samsung have definitely pulled their socks up and are definitely matching Apple for premium feel. I just know I couldn’t get the sane experience personally. I love how my iPhone, Apple Watch and iPad work together seamlessly.

I’ve got to say you are entertaining. I think I’m following this thread mostly just to chuckle a bit at your obvious trolling and the inevitable comments taking your bait. Makes for fun reading. :)

You know nothing about Android and have never owned an Android device but have very strong opinions about Android devices? Oookaaay! Most of the long time members on here that have migrated over to Android or use both platforms have enough experience to make a sound decision on which is best for them and criticize iOS because of Apple's shady business practices and what not. Don't be so closed minded. I have both an iPhone X and a Note 8 and like both and can critique both because I actually own both unlike members like you who have zero experience with Android. In the early days, I was just like you and other Apple fans who hated Android until I actually got an Android device. Android has a come a long way and IMO, is a more productive device than my iPhone X. My iPX is great for content consumption, games and social media but that's about it. Why do I have both? Because I can and I'm a techie so I like to have the best of both worlds.

I’m Apple 100% but, the S8, S8+ and Note 8 aren’t for poor people. They are priced towards the high end for sure.. I wouldn’t be interested in purchasing one but, they are nice phones regardless. On the notch topic, doesn’t bother me at all..

It’s not just the notch that is the problem, it’s Apples’ obsession with rounded corners. If you have rounded corners you have to design any content well away from them (look at how awkward the top-right icons are). Ergo you have nothing like the screen space claimed. The only thing that space near the corners is good for is luxury breathing space, which should just be kept empty.

Actually, the Notch has never been a 'problem'. A problem would indicate something that is technically wrong or a fault with something, which the Notch is neither one of those. However, The Notch is a problem for those who don't approve of it because of aesthetics, etc . That's the difference.

If it's a problem for some people then it's a problem.

problem - a matter or situation regarded as unwelcome or harmful and needing to be dealt with and overcome.

As you can see, this definition can apply to anything or anyone. I don't see the big deal, some people don't like the notch. Why keep fighting?

I think you are confusing important with interesting. I can’t think of one Samsung product that was unexpected or incredible. They make mediocre designs but they are a massive conglomerate with an incredibly diverse portfolio of unremarkable products except their NAND, it’s superb on the prosumer end.

I can think many, for example Note 10.1 phone-tablet that came already 5 years ago with a pen and it was an awesome tablet on that time. I didnt had a separate phone on that time, the tablet worked as my phone (connected to the smartwatch and bt headset for calling/texting/mails/..). And ability running several windows on the screen at the same time was amazing. I could write a code while checking the result on the other window and a library on the third window. Not to mention that a mouse worked also so i was able to do lot with that little thing.

Then they made AtivQ. They couldnt realese that great tablet due to the patent related problems. That tablet would have changed the world once and for all!

Incredible? Yes. Mediocre? No.

Not really the point I was making. If somebody wants to make something a problem, it doesn't make it a failed design because of what it's intended to incorporate, it's just simply some don't approve of it. Two different things.

problem - a matter or situation regarded as unwelcome or harmful and needing to be dealt with and overcome

This definition of a 'problem' is likely not best suited when comparing the notch. There is nothing harmful or needed to be dealt to overcome it. It's a matter of acceptance or shunning it. Even though there are multiple definitions of the word problem, this one is not necessarily applicable.

I don't see the big deal, some people don't like the notch. Why keep fighting?

I don't see the big deal with the Notch either and I never had a concern regarding it, but I don't think fighting would be the most appropriate context. Ironically, you're replying to a post that you're posing and asking why people keep 'fighting', yet your response seems to provoke further arguing (Or bickering, discussing, etc). I'm neutral however with the Notch.

Go watch a video in full screen and get back to me.
Why are you so upset about the “notch” intruding on your videos when zooming into full screen mode, but you’re perfectly okay with the fact that it cuts off the top and bottom of a 16:9 video?

Videos on the iPhone X should be watched in 16:9 mode if you don’t want to lose any content.

I know, I watched a movie yesterday that kept cutting out things I wanted to see, very frustrating and annoying. I don't care what people say, it doesn't fade away. People can lie to themselves all they want, I'm not buying it.

I think this is why it's so polarizing. I just got the X, and I think its awesome. Face ID is great, and I like it much better than Touch ID. I came from using a 6s Plus, and I don't feel like I lost any screen. I also very much prefer swiping up than pressing the button.

But I don't watch a lot of videos on my phone, except for youtube stuff or whatever. If I were watching long movies during a commute, I could see the notch being very annoying. I agree, it wouldn't "fade away" for me with that type of use either. Although if I were watching that much video during travel, I'd probably get something in addition to my phone for that.

Eh, I watch a lot of video content and it doesn’t bother me in the slightest. It’s such a minuscule portion of screen that you’re really never missing anything. You’re eyes are usually focused on the centre of the action which would be the middle portion of the screen.

It doesn't bother me. I would never watch a movie on a cell phone screen. It doesn't matter what size a screen is, or if there is a notch or not, it's still a way too small screen.

The notch is a design compromise, but can I live with it? Yes. Do I love it? No, not really. But for video, it shouldn't impede video watching at all. Video is usually 16x9 (1.77:1), 1.88:1, or 2.40:1 aspect ratios. The iPhone X screen is 2.165:1 aspect ratio. If you zoom in with ANY of the video ratios, you'll be cutting off the top and bottom... more than you lose with the notch. Just don't zoom in and you will see everything. In fact, it's one of the best screens for 2.40:1 widescreen films. You just get a thin border around all sides. Remember: only philistines zoom their video!

I still zoom 16:9 sometimes for a more cinematic experience. Pretty sure I’m English.

This fits the perfect definition for a proof of concept device that was not ready for prime time. You just described an extremely niche scenario which never left the confines of a narrow use case. Very much a mediocre product note 10.1 was. Also, seems like you could have been much better served with a cheap lte hotspot capable phone and a cheap laptop.

You made incredible use form a mediocre product, not the other way around.

I used to do casual development on iPhone 2g too. It too could connect to multiple terminal windows so that I can do whatever you described. It’s not the ideal thing to do but hey, it works.

If your use case was incredible we’d all be using Dex as our main computer today. Sadly, I don’t think that’s happening anytime soon.
