I'm over this notch and I'm tired of hearing people trying to defend it. It's awful to try to consume media on (why should I have to accept a hole in the side of my screen) and then if I choose to not use full screen, I'm left with 4.9" - WOW a whole .2" bigger than the regular iPhone! The notch serves no real purpose other than to allow added screen size!

I don’t see what the complaints are. If you don’t like the notch simply pry it off the phone. Problem solved!

meh - what notch?

As far as I'm concerned it doesn't exist - its only threads like these that remind me there is one.
One thing I’ve noticed about this thread is people who like or don’t mind the notch don’t get called silly names. Those that share their view that they don’t like it, do. Not sure why that is? I’m sure it’s very annoying when you’ve got a nice new shiny phone and somebody shares a view about an aspect of it that isn’t entirely positive or inline with your own perception.

I think discussions on here would be pretty dull if everybody loved everything all of the time and every thread was a high five party.

Use this wallpaper, show the world you've got an iPhone X and not an iPhone 5!

Looks amazing. I hope next they make the screen bulbous, like TVs before flatscreens. Then maybe we can switch apps by turning a dial.

Oh wait, I just described the Apple Watch.

So - bad news for me, was holding out for some sensible designs in 2018, but nope - all stupid notch phones.

Looks like I'll have to head over the the Pixel now.... well until they start making movies that have a bit cut out of the left of the screen I suppose, or until Apple change their stupid 'embrace the notch' design rules.

Until then, bye.

You’re Not being Being very sensible though. There is nothing wrong with your disapproval for the notch, but do you really think that Apple is going to eliminate the notch in just one year from the time the first iPhone X launched? The hardware advancements are not there yet in order to eliminate the notch with all the sensors, camera and speaker. Once Face ID matures in terms of hardware reduction, I think the Notch will ultimately fade, but it’s going to be here at least two more generations of iPhones respectively.

Oh, God. No.

2018 is a bad year for buying a new phone. Every phone has a notch now, it's like that 3D TV craze couple of years ago...

Exactly. The notch may not be liked by many, but unlike many, I recognize it for what it really is. A shortened bezel. And if rumors are to be believed, the 2018 models will have an even shorter bezel (notch).

Next iPhone may give you the option to get rid of the notch in settings by creating a small bezel on top. This would really mask the notch but it would not be obvious

After as much effort as Apple has put in to getting developers to embrace the notch in their design language I don’t see them trying to hide it after one year.

The notch is the notch. Nbd. There’s more to complain about with the X than the notch. Like the ridiculous 18.5:9 aspect ratio.

I’m tired of hearing people trying to criticize it.

It will never stop. That’s just the nature of a tech forum, it’s for others that will vehemently complain until Apple does change it (Because some are inclined to complain and they believe Apple reads these threads), just like the 3.5 mm Jack argument is still talked upon. Outside a tech forum, I have never heard the notch ever being addressed at all by anyone under any circumstances. My suggestion to you, is ignore certain threads, because they’re never going to go away unfortunately.

What's ridiculous about it? It's part of the reason why the notch works so well.

Don’t concentrate on the notch instead look at the capabilities it adds to the iPhone X
Then use that as a basis for liking or disliking the notch

I’d take a standard 16:9 aspect ratio with the notch taking up some of that space over what we currently have without even questioning it.

That's crazy though. All video and apps would have the notch cutting into it. No one would want that.

You have two choices with the aspect ratio now.

A slightly larger video display area than an iPhone 6/7/8...

Or a cropped video display with the top and bottom of a video cut off and the notch cutting in to it on the side. So you’re losing top, bottom, and side data.

Having the notch cut in to the side of a video that I don’t have to crop off the top and bottom of would be much more preferable.

I understand what you're saying but it still wouldn't be preferable to what we have now. It would just be a 16x9 screen with a notch in it. No extra space above and below. No rounded corners. Boring.

I mean you could still have the rounded corners... a 16:9 screen doesn’t mean “no rounded corners”.

Not that rounded corners are a big deal anyways. Did you buy the X for rounded screen corners?

So a 16x9 screen with rounded corners and with a notch. So basically no one would buy it because everything would look weird on it.

The rounded screen corners that follow the edges look really nice on the X so yes.
