I was joking, hence the wink. It was in reference to people "putting" the X3500 into their laptop rumors. Apple will never put a desktop CPU on a laptop...

They've certainly done it before. Wasn't the G3 & G4s desktop chips? and we all know they TRIED to put a G5 in the Powerbooks :p
..I'm not defending the rumor though.. they won't do this.

The more I read the less I know. As a newB to this site, I have been anticipating the MBP 17 with upgraded RAM (4) and a high res screen, due to my work with photography, etc. When the Leopard rumors started flying (and now are a fact), I figured I'd wait that out, but the more contemplation there is regarding possible upgrade(s) to the MB and MBP, I'm at a loss. I am not in desperate need (except for the fact that my ancient Dell Inspiron 8500 chugs along more slowly by the minute).

I am seeing the trend (non-techie and newB that I am) that regardless of when I order whatever it is I decide to order, there seems to be a planned obsolescence and I'm already behind with whatever I get. I don't necessarily need all the bells and whistles at this very moment, but it has been my experience that the more up-to-date I am with my purchase, the longer it will provide what I need across time.

Our history is that one son has a MBP purchased this year (for college) and although I love it, he is already disappointed with the features that were more recently updated. Other son has a Toshiba Satellite (for college and loves it); we have a 2 year old Dell laptop that third son is using.....so loaded up with 'stuff' that it overheats and runs slowly and the Dell support is nonexistent....

Bottom line, I don't have enough tech-knowledge to know when enough is enough.... should I just bite the bullet and buy what exists now which will probably exceed my current (but perhaps not future) needs? Do I wait 'another month or two'.....and then 'another month or two' while waiting with baited breath for the next best thing coming just around the bend?

What to do? What to do? :(

It is always best to buy:
1. NOW if you NEED it.
2. NOW if you don't care about future updates.
3. Wait for an update so that your product stays "new and more competitive" for longer.

You will never be able to get around planned obsolescence. That is how companies make money. If you can, #3 is the best option.

I hope it's right, I agree black and silver aluminum would be sweet!

Its tough to say. Apple likes to upgrade its products regularly. If they want the Macbook Pro to stay competative, stat-wise with other PC manufacturers out there its going to have to step up the macbook pro soon.

Penryn, eSATA, 512MB VRAM+new state of the art mobile graphics card, Blu-Ray BTO option, new current hard drive BTO options are the things that i'd expect to make the cut for the update in January. If apple just included these, it would really make the Macbook Pro the top machine on the market.

As for the other things: multi-touch trackpad, biometrics, black aluminum option, would be great, but its not necessary.

Redesigned power supply, apple remote and lid are pretty much things they have to fix because their either defective or outdated, (Apple wants to replace all the PVC in their products ASAP. That means the remote has to become aluminium.)

And, i've said this before. Wouldn't it be cool if there was a holder that would hold your aluminum apple remote that slides into the express card port? That way you can't loose it?

Plus, i'd like better speakers if possible. I think there was even a PC laptop that had a built in subwolfer. How awesome is that idea!!

To let the cat out of the bag...

It's true that the MacBook will get a major revamp and necessarily along with this the MacBook Pro also so they won't become too 'similar'.

he he...where did u get the news from?
im new to this forum here (and to apple).. but considering the circumstances, i would bet for an updated macbook release very soon and a macbook pro update on january (for penryn).
:)

well im buying my first ever macbook soon and ive been waited for leopard release , but now a macbook update coming sometime around nov 6 is going to be great i would wait a little bit longer for it.
hopefully just ram,cpu and graphics updated graphics most importantly but keeping everything else the same would be great.

Im not so keen on the whole ipod colour scheme for a notebook.
Black aliminum would look great first but horrid after wear. The whole thinner would be great but so someone said before the over heating problems would be high!

MacBooks Will NEVER Have Non-Integrated Graphics

Mh... I don't think that the MPBs will get 45nm chips already in January. As far as I know most of these 'early' Penryn chips yet have an 800MHz frontside bus AND require 35W juice -> no significant advantage over the Merom and much higher cost.

It's a lot more likely that the current Santa Rosa MBPs will get a slight speedboost. 800MHz RAM, 256MB/512MB VRAM, 'faster' CPU 2.4GHz/2.6GHz... this is realistic, no big changes though but still making the MBPs a bit more perfect.

Again - if they upgrade the MacBook to a Santa Rosa platform, the MBPs WILL receive a boost too or they will simply get too equal!

It's true that the Intel GMA X3100 is a proper videochip but consumers want to play games also. Especially the student bunch who are into Second Life stuff and World of Warcraft - this brings whole MASSES to the MacBook. I'm convinced that we will get dedicated graphics in the new MacBook. Dedicated graphics with a 128-bit memory interface because otherwhise it would be pointless and the most suitable mobile solution yet is the 8400m GT.

Well, let's wait and see. *shrug*
Mobile Penryns ship in January. Apple will adopt them right away. MacBooks will NEVER have non-Integrated Graphics - NEVER. The new MacBooks will be 2 & 2.2GHz Meroms in Santa Rosa. The new MacBook Pros will be 2.4 & 2.6GHz 45nm Penryns in their first Penryn logic board. There's controversy that Mobile Penryns won't work in a Santa Rosa logic board so I'm not sure what to call it.

Not entirely sure how much of a good idea something as heavy-duty as a sub-woofer would be. Power consumption alone would be the first reason. Also with the lower frequency oscillations, it could over time, be quite detrimental to the internal workings of the machine. Can't see it happening myself, but who's to know? :)

Adrian Wong of TechArp.com: Intel Penryn Will Not Run On The Santa Rosa Platform

Penryn will work just fine in the current Santa Rosa platform just like the Merom Refresh does.
No it won't. Adrian Wong of TechArp.com broke the news Thursday October 18:

ED#65 : Intel Penryn Will Not Run On The Santa Rosa Platform
From The Above Article said:
However, our source says that ODMs like Dell and HP can still deliver new notebooks based on the 45nm Intel Penryn mobile processors using the current Intel GM/PM965 chipsets. They just need to make modify the VRM to meet the new specifications.
Hopefully that won't be much of a stretch for Apple's engineers as well. ;)

Then why is it in your sig?
Due to the fact that it is my current machine on loan from the studio I work at (been using it around 3 weeks but has to go back at the end of next week). This is what convinced me that the machine is exactly what I need to do all of the work that I will ever need to get done on a portable basis. Just waiting for the SR and GPU update, so as to not have that horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach that I should've waited just two more weeks. I'm getting more and more convinced that the update is extremely close due to all of the well-known British retail outlets knocking the price down by at least 10% on their entire line-up of MacBooks. :)

I think Apple are just changing their main products (Macs & iPods) to aluminium, but will stick with plastic for accessories.

And it would be cool if Apple made a new remote that could fit into the Express card port. Until then, the Sik Rex remote will fit. (But unfortunitely it's an ugly thing :().

The 2.4GHz/2.6GHz Penryns (T8300/T9500) will fit in the 'P' Socket of the Santa Rosa platform because of their 800MHz FSB. The actually interesting Penryn chips with the 1066MHz FSB will require another socket and wont work with Santa Rosa, speaking of the 2.533GHz/2.8GHz variations.

Ah, I'm still convinced that the MacBooks will get dedicated graphics and to mention it once again -> with a 128-bit memory interface.

What I'd like to be changed about the MBPs won't happen though.... think they should build them thicker but make them run cooler to get a tiny bit better graphic performance. Right now the MBP doesn't feel that 'future-proof' hence the strange feeling of so many people who rather wait for the next updates.

Even I'm ogling with that new Dell XPS M1730 nowadays... brrr!!

Something must be done SOON!! Apple!? ANYONE!!!??1

Yeah, basically thats the type of thing i was thinking for the Apple Remote. But you know...classier ;)

It's a pretty cool idea overall. If they wanted to keep the same formfactor as the current one, they could just make like a brace or holder that it would go in and stick it in the express slot.

I wonder if the power adapter could become aluminium? Or would that be an electrocution hazard? Does aluminium conduct electricity that well? I know some metals dont..

Anodizing isn't paint

Just an FYI. And I believe the article said black AND aluminum (think new iMac). I hope the rumors are true. I've been holdng off replacing my wifes Dell until all this plays out (fingers crossed its Friday).
