Oh wow. That might be worth subscribing for on its own. Thanks for flagging that - considering the amount of time I spend on here I probably should have subscribed a long time ago and the push.

Thinking exactly the same thing

Is the delete button everywhere or just in certain forum areas?

To the best of my knowledge, the entire forum. I don't know why they paywall it as it would probably save the mod's a fair amount of time cleaning up the "." posts.

Thx again for mentioning this - I'm onboard!

It was early today and got my tabs mixed up and replied on the wrong thread so I did what I do since we don't have a "delete post" button

To be fair, a post containing nothing but “.” (you could have written “sorry, wrong thread; please delete this post” or something) can be considered spam. I tend to downvote those as well.

Why not just "do nothing" and let it eventually get deleted?

Anyhow, problem now solved as I just deleted the post!!

This is exciting!! :D

We do, kinda, it's a subscriber "bonus".

Oh wow -- really!?
I had no idea that was a thing for subscribers!!!

If memory serves - for what it is worth, I was a subscriber for a number of years - this possibility to exercise the "delete" function applies (or, is applied by you) solely to your own posts (yes, anywhere in the forum) and not to anyone else's.

Thus, in addition to the standard buttons at the bottom of a page - or post - namely, "report", on the bottom left, and the "like" (commanding all of the emoji responses), "quote", and "reply" buttons on the bottom right, there is also an additional button, the "delete" button, also on the bottom right.

Yes, my recollection is that - as a subscriber - you can delete your own posts anywhere in the entire forum; it is not confined to the "private subscribers" area.

Thanks ...

Surely nobody would expect to be able to delete OTHER peoples posts!?

You'd be a moderator at that point

I have a Q about deleting your own post

I've been chastised before for editing a post somebody had quoted later on...
(I didn't even realize they HAD as I'm not omniscient)

Do I have to do a search for the contents of a post before I delete it to ensure nobody quoted it somewhere I don't know about? or to see if it was quoted by someone on my ignore list perhaps?

Not exactly sure why you'd highlight this though

Indeed.

However, and however: I used to be a teacher.

Granted, it was at third level, but, when explaining something, I learned (the hard way, i.e. from bitter experience) never to assume that my students (or, interlocutors) already knew, or comprehended, or understood something, no matter how basic this knowledge may have seemed, or may have been.

Sometimes, they simply didn't know; other times, pride wouldn't permit them to admit their lack of knowledge, not in public; yet other times, they hadn't done the required reading, which meant that even though they were supposed to know this stuff, they still didn't know it.

Thus, it was easier (for me) to tell them.

Now, if this was something they already knew - terrific, one simply reinforced the relevant data, knowledge, material, facts - but, if it wasn't something that they already knew, well, then, with luck, this time, they might learn it.

Not to my knowledge.

Perhaps this is why the feature is behind a paywall. If people delete posts, then replies to that post are still visible and can create a disjointed experience.

Probably not needed, but a note for @turbineseaplane that the laughing emoji I just put on your post in the other thread was used for the intended purpose - laughing with you at the ridiculousness being shared, not at you for rightly pointing out the crazy 😂

Oh I knew!

How? Because you've been posting actual text!

Half the problem with emoji reactions (especially the laugh) is that people just "Drive by" the topics and dump emojis all over and never say anything!

We have no rule about this either way, but we would prefer members not delete posts that will disrupt the conversation or confuse others in the thread.

The most common contributor deletes I have seen are when a mistake is made, and the member realizes it (usually quickly) and deletes their post. Even if the post is quoted, it is not a big deal early on. Something like "The first MacXX came out in 2003", then you realize you are wrong and delete the post. Or you realize you posted in the wrong thread and delete a post. Not a problem.

If your post is a part of an ongoing debate and has become part of a long exchange in the thread, we would prefer that not get deleted for the reasons I mentioned.

I suppose if there was a pattern of a member engaging in lengthy debates, then deleting their posts, disrupting the flow of the thread, we might ask you to be more aware of that issue. In my time as a mod, I don't recall this ever being a problem with a contributor though.

Some posts aren’t worth a response, such as negative criticism. An example of which is:”Tim Crook should be ousted as Apple doesn’t innovate anymore”.

Best way to handle the above is to disagree and move on.

My super fan is back again today 😑

In about a 5 minute window, he emptied his entire quota of daily "dislikes" on me, and then moved on to about 12 more "angry face" reactions

Does the forum have a "might be good for a Mod to check in with this user and make sure they are ok" function?

😬
