why is it so hard for apple to release an iPad mini with ProMotion? I've been waiting years!
Just for clarification… can you draw with analog pencil and paper?Worthless. I have the Apple Pencil 1 and 2. I can’t draw beep
I never understood why Apple didn't just put a female lightning/USB-C connector in the Apple Pencil so you could charge it by connecting it to the iPad's power cable. Maybe they'll rectify that with the USB-C design.people laughing at a lightning pencil connected to the iPad sticking out are the same people praising a pencil connected via usb-c the same way.
so stupid.
I just want them to release a Remarkable style pen
Yes - don’t get me wrong it has a use but it’s very limited. If someone wants more control they’d go to a bamboo product.Just for clarification… can you draw with analog pencil and paper?
An Apple Pencil 3 may finally clean up the mess of some new iPads needing the old Pencil. It didn''t make sense that the brand new iPad had to use an outdated Pencil until you thought about how it needed to be affordable for classrooms and other scalable uses. What if cheaper iPads still work with third party Logi Pen but also Pencil 3 which supports both the technology of the Pencil 1 and 2?
Magnetic interchangeable tips with different hardness and drag. This is something many have wanted for a long time. Kind of spells the end of all of the expensive, bespoke short lasting screen protectors people use to increase drag.To what end? What benefit does a magnetic tip provide if the display isn’t also magnetic or a ferrous metal?
Totally agree, but it seems a lot of people forget that Apple does make a charging adapter for AP1. I never charged my Gen 1 AP by plugging it into my iPad. well other than to test it out and for laughs.I never understood why Apple didn't just put a female lightning/USB-C connector in the Apple Pencil so you could charge it by connecting it to the iPad's power cable. Maybe they'll rectify that with the USB-C design.
Because plugging it in to the iPad was how Bluetooth pairing was accomplished.I never understood why Apple didn't just put a female lightning/USB-C connector in the Apple Pencil so you could charge it by connecting it to the iPad's power cable. Maybe they'll rectify that with the USB-C design.
Thank you. This was the most thought-out explanation/complaint I got to read about the Apple Pencil gen 1.Yes, it did - you could always use the adapter and a cable to charge it from a USB-A socket. The idea of the USB plug was that you could fast-charge it from an iPad (in a ridiculously vulnerable arrangement that could put a huge amount of strain on the iPad's Lightning socket).
The complaint is not really about it being unusable - just that it was an epic failure of attention to detail from a company that prides itself on good design.
- you had a tiny adapter and a tiny cap to lose, on a mobile device.
- they could have combined the cap and adapter
- or, they could have had a socket in the Pencil and a male-to-male lightning cable, which would have taken the strain off the iPad
- or, considering that the Pencil only worked with the (then) new iPad Pro which had added a new magnetic smart connector, they could have, you know, actually made the Pencil use the new magnetic Smart Connector...?
Plus, they could have added an off switch so that the Pencil didn't turn itself into landfill if you didn't use it for a few months. Maybe made it hexagonal so it didn't roll off the table (something that regular pencil manufacturers worked out a century ago)... Or maybe include some sort of Pencil storage in the keyboard cases that came out at the same time...?
Or - and here's the puzzler, if they weren't going to make it compatible with old iPads, have it inductively powered from the digitiser (like Wacom tablets, Samsung phones/tablets etc.) so that they didn't need a battery in the pencil...
Or maybe the greatest design minds in the world could come up with better ideas than mine, but apparently they didn't try. It was really just a particularly lazy bit of design that seems to have happened in a different silo to the iPad design.
They just wanted to allow users to be able to charge the pencil on the go. Without the wireless charging of the second generation model there weren’t many other options. It looks silly but it does work.Thank you. This was the most thought-out explanation/complaint I got to read about the Apple Pencil gen 1.
Usually it’s just “lol, it looks dumb sticking out of the iPad” without any acknowledgment that a different charging method does exist.
There are 3rd party pencils (like the Logitech Crayon) that do have the plug built into the device - and at least the Crayon won’t roll off the table easily, either.
It would appear that whoever signed off on the design of the Apple Pencil was of the opinion that style was more important than usability.
Agreed that it makes sense for Apple to release an Apple Pencil Pro. And if that could be a thing, this has got to be it.Here is my take;
Updated Apple Pencil 1 with USB-C -> Cheapest option to get an Apple Pencil for all iPads as others stated.
Apple Pencil 2 -> Middle tier option.
Apple Pencil 3 -> Pro/most expensive option.
This exactly mirrors iPad lineup as you have a cheap iPad (9 and 10th gen), middle tier iPads (Mini/Air) and pro iPads. So I believe Apple Pencil 2 will be sold for a long time even replacing Apple Pencil 1 after some point in the future. And another speculation of mine: OLED iPad Pros could feature 240 Hertz refresh rate thus making ProMotion 240 Hertz. So 120 Hz is "not pro anymore" and it will trickle down to new iPad Air/Mini with rumored OLED displays. And yes that price increase (starting price for new OLED iPad Pros rumored to be around 1500 bucks) could be justified by Apple as they are going to give customers a new cheaper Pro (120 Hz Air/Mini) while retaining enough feature differentiation with new Pros...
