We can still criticize Apple for a lack of quality games in the App Store because that's exactly what there is - a lack of them - and a handful here and there like an 18 year old game like RE4 isn't changing that. Price is an additional avenue for criticism. This is an 18 year old video game. It shouldn't command a recent-release price.
This is the 2023 released version of the game ‘Resident Evil 4’, which originally was released in 2005.

This game was released for many platforms all in 2023.

It’s not an 18 year old game, though: it was released in March this year and is very much a triple A game.

It’s the same price on XBox, PS5 and PC and it’s a universal purchase title so the price includes the ability to play on your phone, iPad and Mac

I think the tone of the article is what’s leading to the negativity in this thread: if it had said that it’s coming to the Mac for $60 and includes the iOS version in the price then the tone in here would have been much more positive
The game itself, content wise, is about 18 years old alright. I first saw the game walkthrough on a magazine for PC or console I forgot, back in 2007 or so. It could’ve been earlier.

What capcom did essentially, is recycling game content released a long time ago, port it into apple platform, and promote it on iPhone first. Admittedly, todays iPhone hardware running a presumably AAA game released at least 10 years ago with old Engine isn’t something to brag about day in day out.

So in that sense, charging $60 for porting is a bit hard to swallow for folks who played the game a long time ago and enjoyed fully, even though porting game to a different architecture is much harder than people realise (just optimising assets to fit for the target platform is a huge task on its own, and trust me, download size is the least of their

However, capcom has to target iPhone because iPhone user base is far bigger than iPad and Mac combined. They are not even in the same country. If they chose mac first and relegate iPad and iPhone later, the only crowd they will appease are enthusiasts residing on forums like macrumors instead of the broader general public. It’s a no brainer And a small PR sacrifice they are happy to pay for far better reach. Also gives Apple a sample title to brag about their still primitive ray tracing capabilities.

Resident Evil 4 is a 2023 survival horror game developed and published by Capcom. It is a remake of the 2005 game Resident Evil 4.

Players control the US agent Leon S. Kennedy, who must save Ashley Graham, the daughter of the United States president, from the mysterious Los Illuminados cult. The remake has an updated plot, new visuals, characters, cast, and altered gameplay.

Resident Evil 4 was announced in June 2022 and released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on March 24, 2023. Versions for macOS and iOS are set for release later in 2023. It received critical acclaim and sold four million units in its first two weeks, making it one of the fastest-selling Resident Evil games. By July 2023, the game had sold over five million units.

I've seen the '18 year old videogame' thing mentioned a few times, so I've bolded the relevant part.

Still an 18-year-old game which just announced porting complete recently And will be available Early next year. Doesn’t change the fact it’s a remake of 2005 game.
But at the same time, people scoffing at its $60 launch price have no idea how difficult it is to port a game to another architecture.

Allowing players to play it on the iPhone, MacBook and I am assuming iPad makes it a little easier to justify.

I am interested in seeing how it would perform on an M2 MBA more than an iPhone 15.

A remake as in a brand new game, brand new assets, brand new voice talent, brand new mechanics. The only thing they have in common is the story and the locations it is set in.

I've spent hundreds on in game transactions on Marvel Strike Force on the iPhone and iPad and don't regret a penny

Oh right they have to change the game to be touch friendly. But brand new voice talent? Guess they didnt choose to remaster the old recordings.
I wouldn’t call assets “Brand new”, more of a “remastered“ to fit into Apple ecosystem. As for new mechanics, I guess weapon upgrade pack is brand new.

About the same as the digital store price on Xbox and PlayStation. I’m guessing folk on here don’t buy any console games these days. Can you get physical copies for consoles cheaper? Yes. Can you buy digital keys cheaper? Yes for Xbox, Sony not so much as they block digital key availability outside of their store. But are Xbox and Sony digital purchases similar? Yup, most new games are $69.

Now, as games on Mac and iOS get to the standard of console games, should the price go up? Most definitel, the race to the bottom on iOS and android has to stop if you want more full games on the platform. Hopefully it sells enough to justify its existence on iOS/Mac so that others follow. Same for resident evil village and assassins creed mirage. Plus, if games run well on iOS and Mac the price is justified over the console version which you can only play on console or stream then it’s a better value proposition for those who own macs and iPhones/iPads.

and if this includes family sharing then it’s a steal.

You don‘t seem to understand. Resident Evil 4 Remake is not a remaster. Is a completely new game released in March of 2023 for PC and new generation consoles built from the ground up. Is not a 18 year old game. It uses different motion capture, different voice acting, brand new technology in the way it is made, the gameplay is different, you can see the trailer I posted above. The only thing it keeps from the 18 year old game is the essence of the story and not even that is the same. The game we are getting on iOS and Mac is THIS game, that is just 6 months old.

I picked up a 15 Pro in store yesterday and seeing them DualSense controllers in their brick and mortar stores made me think, that to get AAA games on iPhones off the ground, a better integration into existing gaming platforms would be great.

Forget for a second the untapped market potential on phones. It's going to take a while before a vast majority of people will have an iPhone or Android phone in their pocket really capable of running AAA games, let alone put it out on a TV. At the same time, as many here have said, the number of people interested enough in AAA gaming to pay full price for it, yet not interested enough to not already have a PS, Xbox, PC or a Switch* must be incredibly small.

So for the foreseeable future AAA gaming on iPhone, at least in my view, is as a companion device to the gaming system you already have. That's the on ramp to the wider market they may be able to tap in a few years if developers see a value in that.

Now, it's great that RE4 at least is a universal purchase that also gives you the Mac and iPad versions and Apple seems to be keen to push Mac gaming, but again the Mac's not really a strong gaming platform and most gamers will equally have another primary gaming platform.

Which leads me back to my initial view of partnering more closely with established platforms. I currently have an Xbox and a PS4, but if my iPhone integrated more closely with Sony that would definitely push me to just get a PS5 and make that my primary platform, even if I had to buy the iPhone version as an add-on. Equally, but obviously less profitable for Apple, if I could just run Steam on my iPhone and they added the phone as a supported platform I'd buy more games there if it meant playing on the Mac, the phone and my Steam Deck.

I'm just not convinced that the prospect of gaming on your phone and the Mac will really convince the enthusiast crowd to buy into this in the next couple of years, while the majority of phone users will remain shut out of this for a couple of years at least until the average phone is strong enough.

* Although the current Switch is even more constrained in terms of graphics than the iPhone, so Switch owners may actually be tempted to buy on iPhone.

Down the road with USB-C -> HDMI adapters and low-latency bluetooth (if that 'game mode' works with iOS), iPhones have a small but non-zero chance of overtaking or at least competing with game consoles. Game center is a mess though, but if Apple continues to court AAA developers and reinvigorates Game Center I think this could prove at least somewhat viable.

The price is high for now but it will come down via sales. Our Phones are faster than many game consoles now, and soon they will be faster than the highest-end ones so it is a target worth pursuing.

It wouldn't shock me if in a couple of years we see an "Apple TV Pro" that is designed around gaming with an A18 Pro equivalent. Took a decade longer than everyone thought it would, but it could happen.
Yeah, faster, and way way hotter 😅

If you buy this for the iphone it will translate to M macs too?
One buy for the whole Apple ecosystem iphone ipad mac?

That is absolutely not what they did: RE4 remake was launched on PC and next gen consoles in March this year as a brand new AAA game and that is what has been ported, not the 2005 original.

It’s a completely new game remade from the ground up (new assets, new actors, new motion capture, etc), not a simple remaster

No way! This, of course, is a survey or test to see how many people are willing to pay for this money

The Resident Evil 4 remake that's coming to iPhone will be priced at $59.99, the same price that Capcom charges for the game on consoles like the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X.

resident-evil-4.jpg

Resident Evil 4 can be pre-ordered on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac right now, and under the in-app purchase list, the full unlock is listed for $59.99. An additional DLC pack is priced at $19.99, and several weapon packs are available at prices ranging from $2.99 to $9.99.

Capcom released the Resident Evil 4 remake on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC back in March. Compared to the original game from 2005, it features overhauled graphics, new characters, and updated gameplay elements such as the option to create items and ammo from resources.

Apple's iPhone 15 Pro models include an A17 Pro chip that allows for console-quality games to be played on the device. It supports hardware-based ray tracing and has enhanced GPU capabilities to allow for more system-intensive gameplay.

Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil Village, Death Stranding, and Assassin's Creed: Mirage are console games that are set to be released on the iPhone in the future. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are the only iPhones that will be able to run the games, but it will also be playable on M1 and later iPads and Macs.

Resident Evil 4's release date has not yet been announced.

and apparently the iPhone is having trouble with it, heat related issues. oh apple, I love you.

Now the question is, as Steam also supports macOS installs, will people that bought the game on Steam can install it (on Mac only)?
