I have a gaming PC, but I'd be more than willing to shell out sixty bucks for a AAA game that I can play on the road with my Mac. That I can also play it on an iOS device is just icing on the cake.

That's one of the attractions of the Switch.

It combines a Gameboy + console at a price that will not break their banks and yet Nintendo makes a profit per console made.

Yes, but people buy phones because of phone stuff. And then, when they already have them - they can play on the go. More people have iPhones than Switches. Also, iPhones are much more powerful.

The main attraction of the Switch are Nintendo games. And if you’re looking for portable gaming - it’s the way to go. But most likely you already have a phone, and in a year or two, regular iPhones will be able to run games like this.

Realistically, those of us who play on console choose the console specifically. Performance is part of the equation, sure, but it's also a chicken and egg scenario. What platform has the rest of the games I want to play? What platform supports the subscription services I use (e.g. Game Pass)? What console supports the gaming communities I'm part of?

I have zero issues paying $60 (or way more) for a game I want to play. But I won't spend it on a platform that is an island by design.
But it’s a dynamic island

You can’t play RE4 Remake on the Switch. Also, you can use DualSense, Xbox controllers or Kishi/Backbone to play it on iPhone.
But at least there is RE4 on the triple pack for the Switch. It also includes RE5 and RE6

One use case I could imagine are long haul truck drivers. There are about 3.5 million employed truck drivers in the U.S. as of 2021.

You'd be surprised, they have laptops with cellular data in their rigs. They'd be hard put to fit a large 4K TV & large consoles. Many are deploying Starlink RV.

I can imagine they preferring a Switch or even be smart with their money and stick to just a smartphone.

The iPhone 15 pro limitation seems superficial, there are YouTubers who could load it in at least A14 chip. So the 14 Pro and normal 15 could actually play it but of course Apple probably gave the restriction to Capcom so that Apple could sell more 15 Pros

I am going to buy this (and RE8) as soon as it is available and play it with my xbox controller on my M2 11" iPad Pro and I can't wait. I want to encourage this from game developers - we know the iPad is surprisingly powerful considering its form factor, I want something to run that will prove it to me. I have an xbox series x but I didn't buy either RE8 nor RE4 remake at the time so am playing both of these for the first time.I know, I can buy them cheaper and stream but I don't want to stream, run it native or nothing. Still waiting for No Mans Sky, in the meantime bring on Death Stranding please, take my money!

I've been in a few "why don't we have any AAA games on Mac?" threads lately making the point that it's not about the hardware but the revenue. I write about how non-Apple players like Sony & Microsoft put big money subsidizing game creation if not outright buying whole studios while Apple just doesn't seem to do that at all. I reference how Apple people will bash in-app purchases, advertising models in games and subscriptions... basically all ways for game developers to make money on their hard work other than charging a high price for a game.

All that gets relentlessly bashed, often with an argument that because there are millions of iDevice users, game developers can be motivated to make AAA games for Mac because so many people will pay for them.

OK, here's a thread of the most passionate of Apple-centric fans generally rejecting $60 for an AAA game made for Apple hardware.

So why should the game developers develop for Apple hardware again? How do they make more money by going to the trouble of developing for Apple hardware than they can via subsidies, ad models, in app, and/or subscription in the much bigger PC world or established console markets who will also readily pay $50-$100 or more for an AAA game?

If you want to understand why AAA games are few and far between in Appleland, look no further. The MONEY in it to motivate developers seems towards nowhere to be found. Like Apple, the bulk of us seem to want great games for near no cost. That's great. Now why should developers want to develop?

I won’t even call them supporters. This is just moving the goalposts. The lack of quality games in the iOS App Store was just one more convenient area they could criticise Apple over, until they couldn’t, and now they are moving on to the next area of criticism - the price.

Never mind that a similar title on the switch console would cost about the same price, despite the hardware being nowhere near as powerful or the game being as optimised.

It’s also a sad indictment of how the App Store is now synonymous with freemium games riddled with ads and IAP, and Apple needs a separate service (Arcade) in order the surface the better ones. I am not sure a few titles here and there will change anything.

We will just have to wait and see just how committed Apple is to this. Maybe there’s also an M1 Apple TV in the works somewhere?
twelve years ago iOs tried this, you could play AAA games of that period on devices, then developers lost interest. Mostly dropped out when 32 to 64 bit apps was enforced but at the same time playing on a touch screen wasn't an issue, now that apple opened the doors to console controller supports recently, maybe. But Casual gamers who drop 80k in dlc on a regular year because of how easy it's to purchase add Ons is what's feasible for this portable market. Be wary of bored parents with idled handed kids who will be buying these up easily lolol This is why the apple store is riddled with freemium games in the first place.

iOS users have been conditioned to paying $0.99 for games. This will be a financial failure and other AAA publishers will point this as the reason they won’t bring their games to iOS. The only category that will thrive are the freemium casual games with IAPs. That’s never gonna change.
I mean is PC gamers have been conditioned the same and PC is doing just fine!

So many game sales I have a backlog that I will probably never fully play in my lifetime.

It only runs on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.

That’s a very small market.
It's just day 11. :) Do you expect 1% of nearly 5 billion to buy nearly 50 million copies in less than 2 weeks?

Annual iPhone worldwide shipment is nearing a quarter billion.

Also, replacement cycle of phones is typically 3 years.

Within 5 years more than 90% will be using iPhones with ray tracing & 8GB RAM.

It took iPhone & Android nearly 5 years to destroy a lot of phone brands.

Well... this is being marketed at a Triple A price level.... butttt..... I agree with something someone said earlier in the thread.... No one in their right mind is going to drop $60 on this if they have a Mac/PC/Console that can run this game also...

WOW! what a rip. 60 dollars for a phone game
with an iPhone 15 processor that gets hot
cause its trying to be a computer at 3.7 GHZ clock speed.

The Resident Evil 4 remake that's coming to iPhone will be priced at $59.99, the same price that Capcom charges for the game on consoles like the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X.

Resident Evil 4 can be pre-ordered on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac right now, and under the in-app purchase list, the full unlock is listed for $59.99. An additional DLC pack is priced at $19.99, and several weapon packs are available at prices ranging from $2.99 to $9.99.

Capcom released the Resident Evil 4 remake on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC back in March. Compared to the original game from 2005, it features overhauled graphics, new characters, and updated gameplay elements such as the option to create items and ammo from resources.

Apple's iPhone 15 Pro models include an A17 Pro chip that allows for console-quality games to be played on the device. It supports hardware-based ray tracing and has enhanced GPU capabilities to allow for more system-intensive gameplay.

Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil Village, Death Stranding, and Assassin's Creed: Mirage are console games that are set to be released on the iPhone in the future. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are the only iPhones that will be able to run the games, but it will also be playable on M1 and later iPads and Macs.

Resident Evil 4's release date has not yet been announced.

I can get it on My Playstation 5 for roughly the same price...and it wont overheat my system unlike the iPhone 15 Pro Max! Plus if i was dumb enough to buy the Playstation VR 2, i can play it in VR FOR FREE! Why anyone would want to play it on a phone is beyond me when you can use ACTUAL CONTROLS AND NOT TOUCH SCREEN ONES AND PLAY IT ON ANY SIZE TV Bigger then 7 inches!

Yes, nearly 5 billion iPhone and Android active users do not own either of those.

Smartphones are the new distribution channels for new triple-A gamers who would never ever buy a gaming PC or console.
Unfortunately we are not talking 'just' any smartphones here. There is a pretty small percentage of that 5 billion who owns iPhone 15 Pro/Max, which is the only current phone that has CPU+GPU strong enough to play AAA games.

You forget mobiity. Can you play PS5 in the toilet, on the train, on the beach while sipping mimosa? There is a reason Nintendo Switch is very popular.
