Quite high! Should have been much lower. Wonder how many will buy it
Why do you think that? Don’t forget, this isn’t just for the phone version: The $60 allows you to play a current AAA game on your phone, iPad and Mac.

That’s what you’d pay on a PS5, Xbox or PC and it’s the same game so it should be the same price.

This isn’t some free to play shovelware, it’s a bona fide AAA game and if Apple users want AAA games on the platform, they will have to get used to paying AAA prices

Well... this is being marketed at a Triple A price level.... butttt..... I agree with something someone said earlier in the thread.... No one in their right mind is going to drop $60 on this if they have a Mac/PC/Console that can run this game also...

The reason the game is $60 for iPhone/iPad is because Apple wants 30% right off the top. You're paying the developer about $40 and you're paying Apple about $20. That's the crux of iOS development when you have an added built-in cost you need to account for.

This is welcome. I’d rather pay 60$ for a full-blown game rather than the freemium/pay-to-win/junk that litters the App Store.

Hopefully they will add support for controllers and hopefully it will be compatible with something like the Backbone One
It does have controller support. Not only that, it says controller recommended in the app store page. And remember Apple actually sells PlayStation DualSenses in their stores, online and physical

I hate to break it to you buddy, but this game will be selling extras.
Resident Evil 4 can be pre-ordered on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac right now, and under the in-app purchase list, the full unlock is listed for $59.99. An additional DLC pack is priced at $19.99, and several weapon packs are available at prices ranging from $2.99 to $9.99.

This might be even more stupid than Mortal Kombat 11 Deluxe being 90$ on Google Stadia. Nobody will pay this amount of money and even if it is an amazing experience for some reason, nobody would believe it and still not buy.

Apple needs to pay developers like Capcom and add games like Resident Evil 4 to Apple Arcade at no extra cost. And if (only if!) people bite and play it there, Apple could make more contracts with other developers and lock these titles behind an "Apple Arcade +" subscription that gives you access to these AAA console games at a higher cost.

It is possible. It just seems like a weird path when Apple has struggled hard to hold the AAA game developer market.

I expect that to continue honestly.

Why would I game on my Apple products? My gaming and coding desktop has the following specs:

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D
64GB DDR5
4TB of NVMe SSD storage
GTX 3090

Those are specs I can’t reasonably replicate on my Mac at all.

To make matters messier. Apple doesn’t support DirectX or Vulcan and are using Metal. So AAA game developers aren’t able to leverage a familiar framework.

So this will go through the same phase AAA gaming on Apple products always goes. An uptick when Apple tries to push interest. Then it fizzles out as there really isn’t a market for it.

The market that Apple could push would be some tie in where the AAA game would work across platform. Like a Steam tie in or something to give you the chance to pick up the game and continue on mobile. To try and offer a steam deck like competitor. But that is never happening.
As I have pointed out, anyone with a gaming PC or console will never buy it for a iPhone, iPad or Mac.

The target market are people
without those hardware you have already.

It may come to a surprise to many but many households do not have a gaming PC or console. They're more likely to have an iPhone or Android.

Within 5 years over 9 of 10 of them would upgrade to a phone with ray tracing and 8GB RAM. They will likely never buy a gaming PC or console as it has zero value to them.

I bet not many. You need to have the latest and greatest iPhone. This reduces potential buyers significantly. And when next year the new iPhone 16 ultra is out with the real ray tracing chip it will get its exclusive games this game will not be interesting anymore.

I am one of these. Still have the PS3 which can be considered as „no console“.
When I am interested again in gaming I would prefer buying a console. Much more steady platform. You get the latest titles for years, there is not every year a new console which makes the old HW obsolete.

IMO the news here is bigger than the iPhone version, it’s that Apple can now offer AAA game on all its devices.

Now Apple needs a M-chip AppleTV. If for $60 you can get the game on your TV/Mac/iPad/iPhone it’s huge. No other platform offers that at the moment, apart from cloud gaming which is not that reliable yet.
The main concern now will be graphisms but it feels like Apple has finally set the ground to become a gaming platform thanks to it’s universal architecture among its devices. Now the question is will developers & players follow. Those first few games are more than likely paid by Apple, we’ll see if others decide to join on their own.

As someone who owns a PS5 but barely plays I’d 100% ditch it to play on my Mac / iPad & eventually AppleTV in the future. That would be so much more convenient.
Right now my PS5 is at my desk so the TV is free if my partner wants to watch something. It means no big screen for the immersive game nor party games like FIFA. Anytime I’m not home I can’t play because Sony’s remote play is not that great.
With Apple’s ecosystem I could play on my couch, at my desk, on the way, all with a single game copy & without relying on the cloud. We’ll have to see how big those game files are though.

And suddenly my enthusiasm for “console quality games” on the iPhone evaporates as “console quality prices” arrive
For me when I saw it doesn’t even run on last years flagship phone. They should have supported older iPhones too maybe 12p and up. They still could have given the 15p the better graphics to push its sales. Apple working hard to be disliked.

When I say without I mean never bought Xbox, PlayStation or even Nintendo within the last 25 years or longer.

They only have a smartphone then maybe a laptop & not a desktop.

Here's some numbers to mull: Worldwide active users

- Xbox: approximately 120 million (dec 2022)
- PlayStation: approximately 108 million (jun 2023)
- Nintendo: approximately 114 million (may 2023)
- Steam: approximately 132 million (may 2023)
- iPhone: more than 1.46 billion (2023)
- Android: around 3.6 billion (2023)
- iPhone + Android: over 5 billion (2023)
- World population: over 8.063 billion (2023)

Within 5 years over 9 of 10 phone users will upgrade to a smartphone with ray tracing & 8GB RAM

It took Apple & Google about 5 years to defunct Moto (2011), Blackberry (2013), Palm (2010) & Nokia (2011) when they shipped the 2007 iPhone & 2008 Android.

I expect both platforms to gobble up approx 20% of game console market share by Dec 2028.

Which M chip? We will see what happens to M1 once the M3 is out. Maybe then it’s out of the game.
Better get a game console if interested in gaming.

If 8GB and raytracing can be found in every 300 bucks android device then you will have candy crush with better graphics.
And Apple will maybe still releases every year the best iPhone since iPhone with new games which can be only run on those to make last gen artificially outdated.
Better get a console.

Billions of people do not want a console. They prefer smartphones.

Apple and Google wants to make money from new users. Not "better get a console' users who will never buy it for their phone.

Different market, different user profile.

They see gaming PCs & consoles as wasted time, effort & money.

It will succeed as they dont have to pay extra for extra hardware.

$60 on prexisting phone vs $12 + buy console that exceeds $60 + buy TV that exceeds $60.

Netflix succeeded because they werent catering solely to home theater users. They went after the more than 5 billion smartphone users & other platforms.

It is just simple business. Think like producer & not a consumer.

If you just got the 15p it’s not about money. Is about interest. If you are interested in gaming you get/ already got a console. Some will get it just to see that their new Gadget can do.
More price sensitive people don’t own the newest 15p and don’t want to spend 60$ for a game which is much too complex to play for 15 minutes in bus or train.

Existing hardware? So everyone has an iPhone 15 Pro (Max)? No. Those phones start at $999. For that price I can easily buy an XBOX Series S, the game and a TV. Or I could use my monitor and buy the Series X + Game.
