Admittedly, I’ve been hard on the Mini 5. Not because I don’t think it’s a great device, but because Apple stayed with the older design and first gen Pencil.
I can’t help but wonder the % of people that are happy with the mini 5 AFTER owning the one of the new pro iPads verses the people coming from older model iPads.
If you own a new gen pro and second gen Pencil, are you happy going back to the older design? Are you happy having to repurchase a first gen Pencil? Are you happy going back to the home button?
I love Apple hardware, so even though I’ve been hard on the new mini, I wanted to know if it’s size would supplement my current gen 12.9.
I “borrowed” my daughters mini 3 for a could days. Used it for reading, web browsing and YouTube. The mini size has a lot to love about it. It worked great for reading eBooks. I didn’t like the text size in Safari. I prefer YouTube and videos on a larger screen. All personal preference.
The mini size definitely works great for many things. I didn’t like having to go between two generations of pencils. I didn’t like going back to the home button that iPhones have long since left. After using the current pro design, I found myself not liking the bezels on the mini. It felt like I would be spending money on an older device. All personal preference.
However, for me, it came down to cost verses need. I travel and do not like to search for WiFi, so I always buy cellular model iPads. 256/cellular/Apple care/repurchasing first gen Pencil/local tax was $930. For me, as of right now, I can’t justify spending that much for the limited way I would use the mini and the feeling of going back to older features.
I was fortunate enough to have a mini 3 to test drive the size with. My 9 year old daughter is happy the test run is over and she has her mini back.
Is the mini 5 great? Absolutely.
Did Apple throw a great chip in an old design? Absolutely.
Will I pay full price mini 5? Absolutely not.
Will I wait and buy a used mini 5 someday? Most likely, the kids will need their mini’s replaced at some point.
