Glad this thread exists. Been following for a while. Decided to go with a new AW7.
  1. Not impressed with the Ultra titanium. Easily scratched and dented, especially during extreme sports. This will lower resale value
  2. My aluminum AW5 with my dropsies, bangs against doorknobs & walls = not one scratch or ding anywhere on the watch
  3. Display is same size as AW7
  4. New on Amazon = $400 - $100 (opened an Amazon credit card) - $140 AW5 resale to Macmeanoffer = $160 paid for new AW7
One of the best deals I made and much less than $800 that would give me nothing with Ultra I need if I paid that inflated price.

I returned the watch. Runners need more than one button, we need one to mark a lap, another to pause a run, buttons to change the display. One button doesn’t work for runners, maybe it works for joggers. Runners don’t want to look at a screen to press buttons when we are running hard. We want to press then look.

And the buttons need to be on the right side. You don’t want to reach around.

And it’s to thick and square on the sides to sleep with. It woke me up at night.

I traded it in for the 8 and I will continue to use my $200 garmin for running.

This watch is not for runners. I doubt it works well for other athletes either.
You don’t need to speak on behalf of all runners. I do marathons and triathlons, and this Watch is perfect for me to track me runs.

sold my S7 the day after I got my ultra, you’d have to pay me $160 to use one again Lol

resale is rubbish on all Apple Watches if you havnt figured that out

what extreme sport did you do that scratched and dinted it?

Ultra display is slightly bigger, flat, brighter and easier to see.

battery is rubbish on S7 enjoy

Yes, but you had your AW7 for only a year. If you reread, I was on an AW5.

Resale on AW is rubbish + worse with dings/scratches.

Multiple posts already with how the softer Titanium has scratched & dinged with the short time people have had the Ultra.

AW7 plenty bright in direct sun and flat look exposes venerable Titanium lip.

45 min lifting workout + 1 hour walk workout + texting + heart rate checks + multiple time checks + some calls has never left me below a 60% charge left after on the wrist 14-16 hours a day.

Edit: Half of all my AW7 use is cellular only since I hate dragging my iPhone everywhere.

That is well worth $160.

Wow - how did you not struggle doing workouts with the watch. I can’t see using it for a track workout with the button on the wrong side and swiping through screens to see my lap pace.

And I struggle using it for city runs where I have to swipe around to pause a run when I have to stop for traffic lights.

You can use the crown to scroll through the workout screens and press two buttons together to pause.

You could also use WorkOutDoors and get the flexibility to setup the screen exactly how you want it.

I don’t use it, but there is the auto pause option that would cover stopping at crossings I believe.
Pausing can be done with pressing both buttons.
And with Watch OS 9 you can edit workout views and reorder them to put your preferred metrics on whichever screen you prefer, so no scrolling needed.
You mention track, I believe Apple is planning to rollout a track specific workout.

Also, if the „button is on the wrong side“, you can just wear the Watch the other way around.

I'd just like to raise my hand here and say I've had my Ultra since the Monday after release. Have the tendency to bang it against anything wrist level while walking. One of the reasons I've bought the SS models in the past - sapphire. I've looked at the glass and case carefully and nope, no scratches, dents, or anything else to cause concern. Carry on.

The Ultra is a breath of fresh air into my apple collection.
Pretty sure most of you who return theirs or don’t own one will eventually get one anyway.
I can see that it may not be a woman’s taste or choice……but as a guy who loved sport watches like submariners this is a MUST have.
As a watch aficionado I have had up to 25 mechanical watches of different brands at one time, from the solid gold Rolex submariner, 47mm Panerais, seikos, Bulovas, Oris, Tags, Hamiltons, IWC, Breitlings etc. Now down to a handful now which are my more sentimental ones or unsellable.
Mechanical watches are just jewelry statements. Having just time and date is so pasé now to me LOL.
The Ultra display is so enjoyable while using maps and messaging etc etc. They show up so much more readable on its flat display than my S7 that now I tend to use my watch for this purpose than before.
When wearing a suit I can see where the S7 or S8 would be more appropriate…….which is rare occurrence for me. …………..plus the Ultras battery will last longer when I’m buried with it. Lol

You can pause the run by hitting both the action and side buttons at the same time, and you can also customise the data screens to include the lap time/pace (I use it to pace long runs). I used to use a Garmin 945 and I much prefer using this. For my bike I use a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt because of the accessories support and because I don’t have to take my eyes off the road when navigating or looking at power/speed/distance metrics.

In sports, everyone has different preferences for the devices they use. Just because it doesn’t work for you, it doesn’t mean that it’s unsuitable for everyone else.

I’ve been wearing my Apple Watch ultra for 5 days now and I’m starting to really like it compared to my SS Series 7. Battery life is insanely good. Im still within my return period for another week but I’ll probably end up selling my S7 and keeping the ultra.

It can pause automatically when you stop

I think it’s a great watch, and I love the action button and the titanium body. However I was disappointed that the screen size seems to be only slightly (and I’m talking less than a mm) larger than my series 7. Hoping next year they’ll actually make the screen larger. At least it saved me $800
The screen size is actually smaller than the S7. I compared identical watch faces at the apple store and the ultra face is VERY slightly smaller when comparing font size, circular Watch face size. The bezel on the ultra is kind of off-putting as well. Also the screen looks like it’s not as laminated to the glass or something. Like there’s a gap between the glass and the screen like older iPhones/iPads.

I’m not sure yet about the Ultra. I’m going to give it a few more days.

Positives:
Action button
Brightness
Battery life
Price compared to my Hermes SS Series 7

Negatives:
Ultra specific bands look and feel cheap
Lack of optimized text for screen size - everything just seems slightly bigger
Durability questions - reports of GPS/Cellular band scratching and also titanium body scratches with minimal usage
It’s kind of ironic but I feel like the ultra feels more like a toy than the others such as the SS models. It’s almost like a chunky play watch that feels kind of hollow. The screen also looks to have a bigger gap between glass and the LCD. I guess I wear the watch as a piece of jewelry so that quality seems a bit lost on the Ultra.

I can see this viewpoint. It’s subjective after all. The series is more understated and sleek whereas the ultra wants you to know it’s there - especially if you wear dress shirts 👔 🤣🤣. Either one can be seen as a toy depending on who’s looking imo.

Add me to the list of returns. I just kept looking at it and rather than joy felt like a spendthrift because it didn't solve my problem of needing two watches; a Garmin for running and an AW for daily use. To be fair, Apple doesn't market the Ultra as a conventional sports watch. Its extra features are for extreme sports, which I don't do. So while iOS 16 has some great updates for running data its still missing a lot (compared to my 4 year old Garmin 945). I don't mind spending $800 or maybe more, but it needs to be the watch that does it all for that price. I'll look at the Ultra again next year and see if its been upgraded to compete w/ the top Forerunner.

I do like the ultra's bigger screen compared to my S6, so I sold it for net $160, and bought a heavily discounted S7 which has nearly the same size screen as the Ultra.

If we are being honest, all smart and sport watches are toys in the sense they are ephemeral. Technology obsoletes any given model inside of a decade. Jewelry, even costume jewelry, lasts multiple generations and is frequently handed down.

I have had mine since Wednesday and so far loving. No return expected.
My 2 biggest nits, not enough 'Ultra' enhanced apps and I really expected a speed bump/new chip.
Some apps are just as slow as they were on my series 5 which is very disappointing.

I had the exact same reaction. The form factor of Ultra sort of reminds me of childs pretend smart watch. Lol.
I was really on the fence about keeping the Ultra, but Ive completely changed my mind from where I was a week ago. I decided to sell my SS S7 and go all in on the Ultra.
