I think the Series 8 design will win out in terms of design for me anyway. I'm concerned as well about the obtuse and sharp edges simply hitting things and getting dented.
Don’t walk around like this then

I'm afraid to say it, but I returned my watch this morning. I liked it, but I didn't love it. I had a hard time continuing to justify it. There are some products that I gradually warm up to over time and can see myself using it in order to be more productive. I didn't see the personal value on the amount I spent coming back in its usage FOR ME. I commend everyone for making the choices they need to in order to properly use and enjoy their products. It wasn't the case this time for me, maybe another itineration of the Ultra in the future. Enjoy your products everyone!

Why did you buy it in the first place?

Seems most of what you don't like about it are the strongest differentiating factors compared to the Series 8, which TBH were evident with the reveal.

My criticism is purchasing something without understanding what you're purchasing.
I understand what I'm purchasing. If what you say were actually objectively true, then every single physical retail store such as Apple Stores might be able to be abolished because nobody would need to try anything on physically and make a decision on whether it works for them or not.

Now that I own it, not just looking at pictures and videos of reviews... now that it's on my wrist and I can try it in daily operation... I can then... and only then... form an opinion and make a final decision. Imagine that... a wearable item like this that goes on your wrist where your wrist is uniquely shaped to you and the way you live your life etc. is uniquely you... needing to try this item physically.

These posts like "You don't understand what you're buying" are absurd and redundant and off topic.

I upgraded from a Series 6 and am very pleased.
I like the screen, and for me it being flat makes a big difference.
Also happy with styling, I’ve always liked larger watches so this was a very welcome update.
I’m sure I will find something, but so far nothing has irritated me yet about my Ultra.
Seeing extra metrics whilst running has been good, and accessing workouts from button rather than complication is nice.

I understand what I'm purchasing. ...
In a previous post, you asked what the Ultra does that the S8 doesn't do. Given that the differences were well documented, assuming you understood, then your aim is clearly to argue. And your defensiveness here and in your similar iPhone thread reinforce the notion that you have an axe to grind big time.

Sounds like you really have it figured out.

Why are you so damn defensive about everything?

What I don’t understand is how can people repeat the same thing over and over for seemingly years?

Like what is the point of entering into a discussion and telling people to “just return it, thread closed” or “You don’t understand what you’re buying”?

It’s absurd. Yes, I personally understand what I’m buying. Why discussions like this exist is 1. Because they can. 2. So people can talk this through and help solution.

I am struggling with Apple right now. From the 14 PM iPhone to this AW Ultra.

The question I asked was rhetorical. And I’m challenging people to list the main differences because there aren’t many.

I think it’s a great watch, and I love the action button and the titanium body. However I was disappointed that the screen size seems to be only slightly (and I’m talking less than a mm) larger than my series 7. Hoping next year they’ll actually make the screen larger. At least it saved me $800
I didn’t actually know this but I really like the ultra. My previous watch was the S4 and the ultra is a big improvement, and the screen seems much bigger (I don’t know how the S4 and S7) compare.

  • Overall, it's just an Apple Watch at the end of the day.

I disagree with much of your objections like it coming in a paper sleeve rather than the environmental waste of the synthetic sleeve for the AW 6,7,8. Who really gives a f* about the sleeve. Most people toss it regardless of its material. And the “action” button is a nice add, if not customizable enough.

But ultimately you are 100% correct that AWU is just an AW in a different case - same as the SS or Hermes. The functionality differences are minimal compared to a S8 yet quite wide when compared to a mid or high end Garmin (to Garmins favor). Eventually Apple will get there but it’s in no rush because it makes more $ slow dripping out features than pushing out a “Garmin Killer” in one fell swoop.

Keeping it. As advertised. For some situations I'll use my Epix 2, but that doesn't take away from what this watch provides.

BTW - What makes this thread "official"? Your similar thread about returning the iPhone wasn't "official" LOL

When I saw the title on this thread, I just assumed it was sponsored by MR, Apple, Apple Watch Ultra Returners Int'l LLC, The American Apple Watch Disapproval Guild, the Society For Those Who Don't Like New Things and all advertisers at this site. That would be very official. ;)

I agree on several of your points. But the paper sleeve was hilarious. I opened the Ultra and S8 at the same time and noticed the nice sleeve on the S8 and the trash tissue paper on the Ultra. That sleeve can come in handy when storing the watch, etc. If Apple was so into environmentalism then why not put the tissue trash paper on the S8 as well?

You (OP) sound very much like someone who was recently banned from this forum.

Exactly the same posting style ….. becoming more and more irritated and aggressive as the thread grows 😉

Time will tell.
?

Do you have the latest AW?

Apple really needs to work on their watch packaging.
Given the size of the watch (compared to iPhone) the packaging is ridiculous and now even more so with Ultra* (which is bigger).

Combine that with UPSing empty trade-in boxes..... Apple has a long way to go. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. There is a reason why Reduce is first....it's the most impactful.

*I get Ultra is new and they want to showcase it, but the box/packaging/book etc is over engineered.

“Chuckles“ I am a bit surprised that the determining factor for happiness on the ULTRA for some is the bezel. bedezzled about that bezel. I am learning that is a “priority“ for some folks above other utilities. I hope apple caters to these folks next round lol. I was actually quite pleased that the screen size is larger (think 45mm vs 46mm) to be exact. A 2mm bezel and a 1mm wrapped in aero space grade titanium is to much for some folks. What I don’t get is how someone expects something more svelte but twice the durability. You are going to have to make a sacrifice one way or the other. A bezel will always accompany an outdoor watch. The glass isn’t going to protect itself lol. Stick with the mainstream design apple has if a bezel bothers you. I was quite happy they still increased the size of the screen on the ULTRA enough to feel a difference (especially with swiping) and I would beg to differ having gloves on whilst using the device would be advantageous to have a little forgiveness towards the edge. I could see apple loosing 1mm of the bezel next year maybe, but that is only 1mm less than what it is now, and if being bedezzled is a priority, you will always do better staying away from outdoorsy rugged products. maybe ten years from now our watches can be screens with only a layer of graphene for a bezel, but for now, you will have to make a sacrifice one way or the other depending on what’s more important to you 👍🍺
It's reminiscent of the folks asking for constant camera upgrades on the iPhone, yet complaining about the size of the camera bump. You can't have it both ways.

Did you return the Apple Watch Ultra? Please vote and leave some comments.

I just got mine 2 days ago and please note I also have a new 45 mm Apple Watch Series 8. Here are my initial impressions:

  • It's ugly as all hell. It looks like an unfinished prototype. Between this and the Gordon Gecko iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple is no longer a leader in design in my view.
  • The sharp edges of the watch face are terrible compared to the regular Apple Watch Series 8. It's obtuse and it affects the usability of the watch. The smoother and rounded edges of the regular Series 8 Watch are much better. Big step backward usability wise for me.
  • I swear the screen is less sharp than a regular Apple Watch Series 8. It looks a bit hazy and slightly pixelated. I believe this has just slightly more PPI than an AW 8 so I just don't get it but to my eye it looks like a worse screen than the 8 and certainly less bright. Is Apple up to some greasy tricks to try and get the battery life longer?
  • For what you get, the price is absurd. I mean, you don't even get a nice sleeve for the watch itself like you do with the Series 8: it's just cheap, disposable tissue paper.
  • The crown with the protruding side frame around it is annoying as hell. The crown is actually harder to hit because it's blended in with this new protruding nonsense on the side. Yes, I get why they did it: they say it will aid in usability with a glove and etc. when in rough environments but for everyday use I'm frustrated with a Crown that is harder to use.
  • The new action button is beyond a gimmick to me. Jesus, is this thing useless. Apple, you have two buttons already on this watch and you can't figure this out. To me it's totally redundant and unnecessary... why not program the crown button or other button to simply be an action button...
  • Watch is fairly comfortable on the wrist.
  • Overall, it's just an Apple Watch at the end of the day.
I am leaning toward the option of returning this and going with the Series 8. I do rough it and want a watch that can handle being in the bush and needing longer battery life, etc. I may opt for Garmin when roughing it and use the Series 8 daily.
Hahaha. I see your sarcasm there. I am glad you love your Ultra.

Thats a good question why Apple didn’t use tissue paper for S8. My guess is the S8 design is identical to the S7 and Apple probably contracts minutia like that for a few runs to get the absolute best price. The AWU is all new so it could start fresh with packaging and soon the regular AW will get paper too.

Honestly, if Apple really wanted to eliminate waste it would do what interchangeable camera makers have offered for years - a “body only” package in addition to a complete kit. At this point of AWs life a lot of us don’t need a new band or charger. We just need the watch.
