Are you returning your Xs/Xs Max for the Xr?

Right. Alas, this is merely my opinion. With the C range, Apple tried to appeal to the 'lower cost' market.
I have no idea on the statistics. But, they killed the C range for 6, 7 and 8 models of the iPhone.

Here Apple are, trying again to appeal to the 'lower cost' market.
I don't think they are going to make the same mistake twice.

Another reason that I think they will stick with the Xr line is this:

https://www.cultofmac.com/578925/whats-the-difference-between-3-d-touch-and-haptic-touch/

3D Touch is going away in lieu of Haptic Touch, which the Xr adopts first. If you do a Google search you will find tons of articles outlining why 3D Touch was a mistake from day one and is now being scrapped.

iPhone XR uses a completely different strategy compared to iPhone 5c.

5c: Low-cost
XR: Mainstream

5c: Repackage last year's iPhone 5 (2012) using a cheap chassis and subtract $100 from the MSRP.

XR: Satisfy mainstream demands for a 6.1" phablet and include the newest SoC and camera sensor. Use the same premium aluminum chassis.
Once again, I agree completely with you. I believe the Xr line is here to stay.

Nah, I couldn't go backwards when it comes to a screen. Too important in a smartphone.
I wouldn't exactly call it going backwards. There are tradeoffs. I have listed those i.e. blue shift and image retention. I have both on the Xs Max right now. Those are not traits of an LCD display. Not to mention that technically the Xr can run more efficiently since it is driving less pixels. Then there is the fact on how many pixels the human eye can actually discern. Steve Jobs was a huge proponent of that.

Except the 5c was extremely hampered from the get go. It had a previous generation SoC and had half the storage capacity of the base model 5S. It was born to die. The Xr is hardly that, it shares the same SoC and has storage options starting at 64GB. This is hardly a c device.

Agreed. If anything, I think they will most likely continue to develop the Xr line. IMHO it was a brilliant move by Apple to provide some distinct separation in the lineup yet not. If that makes any sense? ;)

I hope they never kill LCDs off as there are some distinct advantages.

Touche', good points...

I agree. There are lots of people who will not (at least not yet) pay $1000+ US for a phone, even if it's a great compact computer. I'm one of them. Were it not for the prospect of the XR, I would seriously be looking at Androids, even though I want to stay in the Apple ecosystem.

Regardless the motivation, I'm glad Apple is releasing the XR. I don't see it being the "5c" of 2018.

It would be going backwards for me. I prefer OLED to LCD, higher PPI, and 1080 would be a minimum for me.

Not sure how he is trying to claim the screen isn't worse. It will be good, but not in the same league as the XS or XS Max. I do think the XR will be very popular.

I understand completely. Some people get hung up on specs and numbers that have no real world value. The human eye can only discern up to a certain PPI.

I used to be a “top of the line” guy myself. ;)

“Worse” is a relative term in this case. I think “different” might be a more accurate description.

Yea I am not sure it's necessarily about having the top of the line, I just find a screen like that a step back from the X/XS models, that's all. In a device that is all screen, I notice the differences. If it were 1080 at the least, it would be something to consider on my end. Ultimately I prefer OLED though so I am good with what I have.

I respect that.

I'm confused OP. Does your XS Max have all of the issues that you listed in your first post or are you just returning it because some people are having these issues. Reason I ask is that you never stated you were in fact having any issues with your XS Max.

And no, I wouldn't go for the XR over the XS or XS Max. I think the screen is going to be a big compromise despite iMore's attempts to minimize it. At the very least it should have the same ppi as the iPhone 8Plus. I don't buy that there is no discernible difference because if that were the case, Apple would have used the same resolutions for both the regular and Plus sized phones. They didn't because the screen on the Plus phones would not have looked very good. Seeing that the XR has a larger screen that the Plus phones, I can't imagine it looking very sharp.

Obviously if the screen doesn't matter to you then disregard.

Yes I have the issues listed, including image retention and blue shift.

Have you watched any of the hands on videos with the Xr? The screen is plenty sharp. ;)

I think the Xr is an excellent choice.

So so if 3D Touch is, as you claim, a disaster, why does the Apple Watch still have it on the series 4? Same s as the series 0, 1, 2, 3.. what’s th excuse for that?

I understand this sentiment, but I'm going to reserve judgment until I actually see the XR's display myself. Apple's phone LCDs are (generally) really good, and theoretically, the XR's could be their best ever. On paper, we'd still expect it to be a step down from OLED - but in practice, who knows? I'm really curious to see the XR & XS side by side.

I never said it was a disaster. Do not put words in my mouth. I said it was a mistake and that it is now being abandoned.

I am not an expert on 3D Touch, but there are countless articles and YouTube videos on the topic by people who are experts. Have a look...

Here's a quote from Phil Schiller to start:

“Engineering-wise, the hardware to build a display that does what [3D Touch] does is unbelievably hard,” says Schiller. “And we’re going to waste a whole year of engineering — really, two — at a tremendous amount of cost and investment in manufacturing if it doesn’t do something that [people] are going to use. If it’s just a demo feature and a month later nobody is really using it, this is a huge waste of engineering talent.”

And here is a good article about it:

I feel the same way. I need to see it in person. But from the YouTube hands on videos I have seen it looks amazing.

I see, you’ve formed an opinion that Aplle are getting rid of it, because it was a mistake, but can’t answer my question, random people on You Tube or tech website articles really aren’t valid either.

Funny mistake that they and their customers keep on using.

How on earth have you already experienced image retention?

I highly doubt there will be many people returning the Xs Max for the Xr.

I do think that the Xr will sell incredibly well though because for the price it is a nice phone, but i'm not interested in downgrading.

That’s fair. I’m certainly not bashing anyones choice to go with the XR. I just find it a little silly to consider the screen equally as good, like you would choose it regardless if they were priced the same. It’s a good value, I just think Apple skimped a little too much on the screen with the XR.

Curtis' report echoes an April 29 report by respected KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who already claimed that Apple is going to kiss 3D Touch goodbye next year.
