I don't think they are going to make the same mistake twice.Right. Alas, this is merely my opinion. With the C range, Apple tried to appeal to the 'lower cost' market.
I have no idea on the statistics. But, they killed the C range for 6, 7 and 8 models of the iPhone.
Here Apple are, trying again to appeal to the 'lower cost' market.
Another reason that I think they will stick with the Xr line is this:

3D Touch is going away in lieu of Haptic Touch, which the Xr adopts first. If you do a Google search you will find tons of articles outlining why 3D Touch was a mistake from day one and is now being scrapped.

Once again, I agree completely with you. I believe the Xr line is here to stay.iPhone XR uses a completely different strategy compared to iPhone 5c.
5c: Low-cost
XR: Mainstream
5c: Repackage last year's iPhone 5 (2012) using a cheap chassis and subtract $100 from the MSRP.
XR: Satisfy mainstream demands for a 6.1" phablet and include the newest SoC and camera sensor. Use the same premium aluminum chassis.
