That's the drive in the 17", I thought the drive for the 15" had to be smaller even, so they are different which is why only the 17" 7200rpms are shipping ????

They are both 2.5" drives and probably the same exact drive. I'm in the same boat and its really ticking me off. I went through the same exact thing with the GeForce 6800 Ultra on a G5 2x2.5. Of course there was actually a shortage of that card. I don't know of any shortage of 2.5" SATA 160gb 7200rpm Seagate drives.

But maybe the 15" needs a thinner one?? Maybe they're waiting for the Fujitsu drive that doesn't seem to be out yet??

I can't imagine it'd be the same drive and not one 15" has shipped with one. It sure would be nice to have some sort of explanation, but I guess we'll just have to wait! And wait! And wait! :(

Maybe we should all protest in front of Apple HQ in California with signs and burning effigies of Mac Book Pros? Maybe that'll speed things up?

I'm really starting to get twitchy about the delay. I think I'd feel better if I knew what the delay was for, especially with 17" with 7200 rpm HDs shipping at the moment when ours are sitting in their warehouse.

Haha! Well, that might be a little extreme, especially since I'm on the East coast! But it sure would be nice to know what the delay is!

I would hope that Apple would realize thats the least they could do. Maybe we'll get something free out of the whole ordeal *shrug* however unlikely that is.

Probably not, since that was the date quoted when we initially placed our orders. It'll be worth the wait in the long run, BUT......... What's up with the 17" drives shipping??!!

Thats what I would like to know. Has anyone happened to have called Apple about this phenomena?

Well, after wondering what the delay was on my computer (17" High-res, 7200rpm drive) I called Apple again and talked to them. The kid was being dumb and not even addressing my question so I asked if I could talk to someone who could answer my questions. He transfered me to his manager and she was trying to explain that the MBP is in such high demand that they can't fill all the orders in a timely manner. I had her cancel my original computer order and add the exact same computer to my order which bumped my shipping up from July 18th to June 15th (and she bumped me up to 2 day shipping for no charge).

My guess is that the folks at Apple are seeing such a high demand for this drive in both machines that they are shipping the 17" MBP's with the 7200 rpm drive before the 15"ers. I could be wrong, but they do bring in more of a profit for the company. Just my thoughts.

I'm another who is impatiently waiting for my 15" MBP with the 7200RPM drive. I called customer service to see if they would offer any insight into the delay especially since the 17" MBP's are already shipping with the drives. No luck. They had no explanation. It's gonna be out of date before I get it!

Same deal for me - 4-6 weeks with the 15".

Let us pray for the Magic Disk Fairy to wave her wand and bring them a bit quicker.

I know it will be worth the wait, but gazing at my invoice and just dreaming about opening that great big box, my first new laptop since my 2001 800mhz G4 Powerbook, is getting quite painful.

All hail the great Magic Disk Fairy!! <<bow>>

I have a feeling they're waiting for the Fujitsu MHW2160BJ drives, that were supposed to come out in May but don't seem to be available yet. Don't know why the 15" ones get a different drive than the 17" ones, but apparently they do or they'd be shipping too!

This will be my first laptop ever! I've always craved the power over the portability. I have a G5 dual 2.0 that is still as fast as the day I bought it, but now that the laptops are fast too I look forward to portability!!

My first laptop and mac for me too! I can't bloody wait, the first thing I do in the morning is check to see if the status has been updated or not, and its just making me want to pull out my hair bit by bit.

I'm really excited since this computer isn't that bad of a hit down from what I have right now: A 2 and half year old Dell with a 3.0 ghz Pentium 4, 1.5 gigs of ram, 240 gigs of hard space, and a GeForce 7800 GTX with 256 mb of video ram. Going from that to the new, low end MacBook Pro is very tasty indeed, considering that I can just unplug and take the MBP with me. Now if that Hard Drive Fairy would just hurry up and wave her/his/its wand.

The 15" 7200RPM option has had a shipping delay of 4-6 weeks since July 5th and still is if you order today. Wouldn't you guys think that it now being July 14th Apple would have changed the expected delay to 3-5 weeks? Maybe they don't know when the drives are coming? Or is it just that they will need that time difference to get all the orders out?

Oh you will be so happy! There is something much more exciting about opening up a laptop box than a desktop. Just the feeling of compactness and completeness of the hardware within.

And the fact that you can take it round and show it off everywhere. I actually sent out a joke "New arrival in the family!" email to a couple of friends when I got my ibook years ago.

And just being able to go on holiday and take your laptop with you and use it 100% of the time and not actually do any holiday activities etc etc... your family will love it too ;)

I was just about to order my MBP when I found this tread... See if I understand this. 5400 vs 7200 the 7200 is slightly faster but the 5400 gets better battery life? Any other pro cons?

st9160823as

This is the model without "sudden motion sensor". If you want that, there should be a G-letter in the end of the model number. It's optional feature so that model is available in two different models.

found the st9160823asg using froogle.com, $190 with 2day+tax. Thats $40 more then apple charged for the upgrade, but without the month delay.

Here's the one with "sudden motion sensor" (indicated by the G-letter in the end of the model number). If Apple's is cheaper, that would indicate Apple using the model without motion sensor, which would be odd because they advertise the feature on the MBP page. Perhaps they just have different pricing, though...

I know, I can't wait! Especially when I'm monitoring email, weather, etc., and I don't have to run upstairs every 5 minutes while I'm doing something downstairs! ;)

Just a theory, but I'm still thinking they'll be going with the Fujitsu MHW2160BJ for the 15" ones. They don't seem to be shipping yet, so it would make sense as to why no 15" orders with the 7200 upgrade have shipped.

But that's just me obsessing because I'm having a hard time waiting!

I am thinking it could be the 160 gb version of the Hitachi Travelstar 7K200. The Hitachi as well as the Fujitsu are impossible to find on the net.

I ordered mine at Jun 5, 2007 at 05:57 AM PDT
