raid 0

Off-topic, but: but WHY for gods sake?!?! What's with this raid 0?

Raid 0: i don't like it. At all. It is evil. Go google it!. Or take ALOT backups and pray! And for what purpose does anyone need it?

In short:

pro: mwaa, some speed? Not as much as you would expect! The speed gain depends a lot on the slowest disk and off course your bus speed (troughput)... and when your bus is full it is full.... Does it double speed: no, does it double cost: yes!
CON!!: 1 disk damaged = all data gone! 2 disks = double risk, 3 disks = triple risk and so on...

What's the difference between the apple components kit and just the oem tape on eBay? The price difference is huge.

also i have the base 27 inch. I just want to replace my HD with a ssd. The process is as "simple" as cutting the tape off, which will release the screen. Then disconnecting the screen, moving the speaker and pull the old hd and then reseal? Seems easy enough for a novice like me to do but I'm kind of worried about the sealing process.

also, whats the best way to go for a 256gb ssd?

Hi, guys, finally i completed my configuration for my

Apple iMac 27" Late 2012, 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 CL9 LowVoltage, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB, Apple SoftRAID 0 (Samsung SSD 840 PRO + APPLE SSD SM256E), Dual Boot (Windows 7)

And imo benchmarks are damn great with this config, its perhaps the fastest iMac you can build by today.

More pics comming...

Perhaps a vid?

The blade ssd install went as planned, so i decided to boot into recovery with the 128gb samsung drive and Blade SSD. Thankfully disk utility did not try to fuse the two SSDs together. I swapped out the samsung SSD with the 3.5" 1tb and booted back into recovery and disk utility tried to fuse the two drives together to create a fusion drive. This is good news for those who what to run the imac with 2 SSDs, my ultimate goal is to install a 512GB Samsung ssd and a 256GB blade ssd.

I know this is a long shot did you ever raid 0 the samsung blade SSD and the Samsung 830 SSD, i planning to do this and wanted know how it would bench mark

Can someone tell me please the part number for the latest Samsung Blade SSD Retina 512GB?
(Or doest it exist just one model?)
Thanks!

Its Apple Part Number: 655-1739A
Samsung Part Number: MZ-DPC5120/0A2

I have a extra 512GB retina Blade SSD. PM me if interested.

Before someone starts lecturing me about the status of my warranty, let me show you a picture. Im going install a 3770 i have laying around so i had to remove the cpu.

Is the 3770 the fastest CPU that will work in the 27"? I don't know much at all about CPUs. R.OG, your photos are rocking my world.

@Geux

What tape did you use? I tried to find the 4926 in the Netherlands but the one 3m dealer that actually did call me after leaving a message on his site told me it isn't "active" product......

(I can't PM because you've got to post 5 times and be at least a member for a day...)

There is no difference. I bought a kit and decided to get some extras so people don't have to buy the complete kit from Apple Components.

Has anyone opened with just a guitar pick? I'm only going to open the imac once and it seems a bit steep to pay another $100 for just the handle of the cutting tool. I don't want to damage the screen so will buy the complete kit if i have to, but it would be nice to save that extra money.

I now have the cutting handles when you buy four tape kits. Using the handle makes it even easier to open up your iMac. I suggest that if you are going to use the cutting wheel only is to hold it rotating it slightly as it cuts through the tape.

I was wondering when the new Macbook Pros come out with Haswell cpu's will there be an updated faster Blade SSD? It would be good to get hold of a single SSD which can really keep up with the faster 2.5 inch SSD's. I don't like using external storage and having to remove the 3.5 inch HDD.

Thanks! I'll be ordering the tape only. I'll get the suction cups and picks from ifixit. I'm going with the Samsung 840 500gb drive. Hopefully everything comes in by next week and I'm able to get this done. Ripping the tape off seems the most difficult part but hopefully with all the tools I will have it wont be that bad.

DAW system

Hi all,

So my PC is currently on sale finally, and my speakers have sold...next is the HDTV monitor... but I'm still procrastinating over which iMac arrangement to get and what is best in terms of how I should upgrade it for my purposes. So any specific help would be much appreciated for a once and final time :)

The iMac 27" (I'm going to get) will be used for music recording/production mainly. There will be some imaging/CAD work also going on every-now-and-then. Other than that, other small time work (documents, etc) will get done on a laptop elsewhere.
I plan on using either Cubase or Logic (does anyone know any accurate rumours of a new Logic version coming soon?) for the music production.

Now the internet seems to be lacking a lot of fresh (2012-13) discussions regarding these new macs with audio production, or discussions regarding fresh use of SSDs for music production. However from what I can gather SSDs are great for applications and the OS, but wouldn't be too practical for saving actual audio files due to the continuous writing/saving you will be doing (and the limited writes you have on SSDs. Although, saying that, I get the feeling the number of writes is still well beyond what I could achieve in the space of 3-5yrs' worth of writing/saving audio files to (before I assume I'll be willing to upgrade my computer situation)). A bonus to using an SSD also for the audio files would be the complete silence from SSDs (great when trying to mic up and record!).

For audio, what appears to be best is to use three drives: 1) OS + apps, 2) Audio files, and 3) sample libraries, virtual instruments. I'm not sure I'm someone who is going to be overloading the samples; the majority of my recording/production will be 'rock' based, using a fairly limited range of instruments of a typical rock band, as well as the usual required instruments for the odd case of creating music that falls in the range of other projects (from classical to electronic). But I definitely don't need wads of extreme virtual instruments and samples. I like my music to be 'true', essential and replicable if performed live.
So, if I'm going to use three drives, what three drives should I be using? Should I be using an SSD for OS/apps, another SSD for samples and virtual instruments - both internally, and an external HDD drive to save/store audio files? Or, could I simply use x2 internal SSDs, one for OS/apps, the other for samples and for current audio files, while using an external HDD to save other audio files to once they're done? This would allow the external (noisy fan) HDD to be disconnected while recording, etc and used only as a way of storing/backing up audio files once they're fully completed and no longer need to be on the internal SSDs. (I can back up the external HDD to another HDD)
Is this going to be the best method?

(Other possibilities: use x1 SSD for OS/apps and samples & x1 internal HDD for storing? Just use x1 SSD for OS/apps/samples and an external HDD for backup?)

I feel like I've been looking so long and hard at so much detail that I can't see the wood for the trees!

If people could recommend which would be the best situation, and therefore which version of the iMac I should buy and what personal upgrades I should do, that would be absolutely fantastic!

Do I need to buy the Fusion drive version if I'm to remove the HDD for a 2nd SDD? OR just buy a single SSD version and add a 2nd SSD?

Is this the most appropriate solution, or overkill:

Buy iMac27" w/:
3.2GHz CPU
8GB RAM
1TB HDD
680MX graphics card

£1,710 (through education store - I'm a teacher :) )

Then I can buy the kit to open up the mac, and upgrade to:
CPU - i7 3770, 3.4GHz
RAM - 16GB (Crucial?)
H/D - buy Samsung 830 128/256GB for OS, buy Samsung 830 256/512GB

- or buy the 1TB Fusion drive version, keep the Samsung SM128E, buy a 256/512GB Samsung 830, taking out the 1TB HDD (can I turn this into an external HDD to backup to? Or could I sell the 1TB HDD- would that be worth it, what if I need to get something repaired- if Apple see it gone will they declare the warranty void? - would I even get much back for selling the HDD?)

I'm trying to do this to the best I can for a solid audio (DAW) computer without spending way more than I need to, but without leaving myself close to running out of storage space quickly.

- Would RAID 0 be worth it (this was briefly mentioned to me in an earlier post but would like this cleared up a little - little worried about one drive screwing up and meaning I've lost two expensive SSD drives!)??

SORRY- this post is really long! but it's doing my head in how much I'm thinking about this with so many possible options!? Thanks for any help!

I managed to cut the adhesive and I was able to unclip the larger display cable. Can anyone guide me on how to disconnect the second, smaller display cable? It's not just popping off and it has 3 wires exposed on it and I don't want to rip them off.

edit: i was able to remove it. it actually pulled up a bit differently than the bigger one. the smaller one doesnt have a lever on it like the larger one.

for those that just want to swap out the hd for the ssd, its not that difficult. For me the hardest part was taking of the cables for the screen and then taping it back up. I didnt fully line it up properly before it bonded. I will have to order a new set of tape and redo it.

Yeah, it's no problem - takes some force, but there is nothing to break on the inside of the display, so don't worry.

I made my own cutting handles :)

i bought the ifixit guitar picks and they worked flawlessly. I didnt even have to use that much force. Once i got it in, i was able to move it around quickly. Taking the tape off took me 5 mins or less. It was disconnecting the cables that took me a while to figure out. Thats the part any novice will have issues with.

just have to remember the big plug has a lever that you have to lift up and then the cable just slides up. on the smaller one, you have to push the side tabs a bit to loosen and then it slides out too.

OWC has a fantastic video on YouTube that walks through the entire process and clearly explains how to remove each connector. Well worth having the video queued up when upgrading. Honestly, after watching the video upgrades do not look that hard, if you take your time and follow the directions seems very straight forward.

Hi guys!
I got an Imac 27" 2012 and I'm planning to swap my standard 1Tb HD with a Samsung 840 Pro 512gb.

Which one is the correct adapter between this two please? What's the difference? Thanks in advance!

Correct me if I am wrong but the new iMac uses a 2.5" drive, that Samsung is also a 2.5" drive, so it should be a direct swap, no adpater needed.

The stock one is 1Tb 3.5" at 7200rpm.
I'm wondering which one from these two adapters is the best pick and what's the differences between them. I'm waiting for some professional to respond :) thanks guys!
