the manual mentions ways to replicate the mouse wheel on an Apple mouse. Will I just be able to use the context-sensitive finger movements on my Magic Mouse? That would be great if possible!

Thanks
Stuart

I've used the Magic Mouse (Apple's latest mouse the new version with the touch sensitive top) when playing Rome: Total War and was not satisfied. I've switched back to my $10 Microsoft two button with scroll wheel.

Why? The Magic Mouse did everything it was supposed to, including scrolling. The problem was that occasionally it would misinterpret (or I would mis-click) a right-click as a left-click. On the Magic Mouse the mouse there is only one button, the mouse looks at where your fingers are when it's clicked to determine if it's a right-click or a left-click. If you leave your index finger down too much when right-clicking with your middle finger, the mouse decides you meant a left click instead of a right click. In RTW, disaster ensues (or at least you send one of your armies off to somewhere completely unexpected).

And yes, I gave the Magic Mouse enough time so that I could learn (or internalize) how to use it. I used Magic Mouse exclusively for about a month, for both RTW (via Boot Camp) and for all other computing, and liked many things about it, before I just gave up and went back to a mouse with physical buttons.

In short, get a cheap two button mouse with a scroll wheel and use that for RTW. Happy gaming!

More tips

Hello everyone I'm going to present to you tips for a healthy gore-filled campaign.

1 Auto-resolve at your own risk! You easily lose more troops than you should've here's a link to watch a video that proves my point

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzGuVbtsroc

2 Build your economy BEFORE you prepare your large armies.

3 If you're playing as carthage greece or the house of Scipii taking Sicily should be your main priority.

4 When playing as a non-roman faction defeating much of rome before they get the marian reforms will prove very effective.

5 Testudo form isn't very effective against a human player because unlike the AI they know how to get around it

That's all I really have to say so..... Bye

2 Build your economy BEFORE you prepare your large armies.

#2 is far and away the most important. It slows you down slightly in the early game, but if you keep your army small and don't spend all your money, you'll soon be able to afford huge bribes and big armies.

RTW: Mac startup screens - very nice

I like the mac-like interface of the RTW initialization screens. They allow you to set the video resolution and a few other interface items. Also it looks like you can set the various runtime parameters as in Windows, but I haven't tried this yet.

One minor issue is that the background music cuts out about half-way through the loading screen for tactical battles. I've reported this to rometwsupport@feralinteractive.com

Crashes

Has anyone had any issues with Barbarian Invasion crashing? I was playing as the Alemanni and when I conquer the last settlement to beat the game, it keeps crashing. I've sent an email to Feral's support, but in the mean time I wanted to see if anyone else is having the problem. Thanks for any help!

I'm running a 15" MacBook Pro. 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM

If I retake Ankyra in the Barbarian Invasion as the Eastern Romans after it rebels it crashes every time as the scroll is coming up after my general says, "Victory". So yes it crashes. However, I haven't had it crash any other time. I also sent an email.

My quick question is - reading through the manual before I get home to my iMac tonight - the manual mentions ways to replicate the mouse wheel on an Apple mouse. Will I just be able to use the context-sensitive finger movements on my Magic Mouse? That would be great if possible!

Yes you can (when they emulate a mouse motion like scroll) however I have found the Apple mouse cannot right and left click at the same time that and sometimes I click left when I meant right often meaning my army gets killed so I swapped to a Logitech mouse for gaming.

However we have one in the office for testing and the game does support it if you wish to play with one.

PPC Support? When?

Has there been any word yet on when a patch will be released to support ppc architecture? I'm really looking forward to playing the game on my G5!

People with a MBP might be too busy running the game on high with their native resolution to post performance here.

I'm running it on an early 2009 MB with the 256MB version of the 9400m on a 1440x900 monitor with almost everything on high so it wont stutter with large armies. So, I have a moment to spare to say yours will handle it just fine :D

i've never played this on a Mac, but i've played it on a few PC's for years. my work HP laptop is a centrino duo with an ATI HD 2600. my old home PC is a Athlon 64 3200 and a ATI x1950 graphics card with 256MB RAM.

played great with full graphics on each machine with XP, Vista and Windows 7 32 and 64 it versions. I did have problems with Medieval Total War and Rome Total War with an old nvidia card i had. this is why i switched to ATI. it was a known problem on the TW forums with nvidia drivers past version 50 or 60.

it's an old game and not very graphics intensive

Mine has been crashing constantly lately. Just as I get going it keeps crashing. What's the turnaround time on hearing from Feral? It's been 2 days for me and nothing yet.

I've only experienced crashes on BI, not the original. I received a response from my report within 24 hours.

You're probably better off playing the original until they are finished with the UB patch. I'm guessing the fixes for these crashes will probably be included to kill 2 birds.

All emails in the system have been dealt with and a beta patch has been made available to those effected. If you sit have no reply PM me your email.

Game ranger names

To everyone who has purchased the game already, start posting your game ranger names on this so it'll be easier to see who is online. So far I've only encountered 20 different people. Mine is KingofMacedon. RTWmaniac if you're still reading this thread, which probably you are, I can't wait you beat you down in some Total War

Has anyone tried testing the PPC patch Edwin mentioned? I can't send PMs on the forum. :(

It's should come next week we have had a few small delays as we have been been working on the crash mention in this forum (and we have fixed it and released a patch), you can email me using my forum user name as the name and @feralinteractive.com as the rest of the email.

I don't want to write it in the forums to avoid the spam that will follow but if you email it will forward through to my account.

Cheers,

Edwin

Does anyone know if this(the mac) version supports mods? And, if so, how to get them to work?

On windows, you would put the mod folder in the rome root director, and then add the following commands to the startup parameter "-mod:<insert name of mod folder here> -show_err" to get them to work. I tried doing this with a mod, and so far it hasn't worked, but perhaps I just made a mistake. It could have something to do with the fact that it doesn't seem that the game files are actually in the folder, but on an image in the folder.. seems kind of weird.

I need my Europa Barbarorum!
