tips and tricks

hello everyone i've been bored lately so i've decided to post a couple tips on playing rtw (yes i have played the game before and it is AWESOME!!!!!)

1 be cautious w/pikemen if you don't have the proper defenses pikemen will easily be eliminated from your army because flanking them will destroy them.

2 Try to maintain a siege and starve your enemy out because it will result in the loss of no one if it works right.

3 try and buy settlements from other factions it costs a lot of money (20,000 denarii at least) but i have a cheat for money (push the ~ button then type add_money (insert amount of money)
ex. add_money (1000)= wrong
add_money 1000=correct

4 it is almost never a good idea to let the AI do the battle for you

OK, here's my take:
1. Every unit will be destroyed when they are flanked, not just pikemen. In fact, the main objective of almost every battle will be to try to flank your opponent.

2. Don't bother with sieges. You need to conquer that town fast so you can start getting its income. Also, you need to free your army from the siege as fast as possible so it can go attack someone else.

3. Don't bother cheating. The possibility of loss is what makes victory sweeter.

4. I agree. Playing each battle will give you much better results (fewer of your troops will die), plus it's more fun.

Here's my correction on what I intended in my last post

1 Yes units will be destroyed when flanked but i've seen that pikemen take most damage from flanking because it's really hard for them to turn around and do any damage to the flank attackers.

2 Your new sense of siege logic sounds like a good idea but I would still rather starve my enemy out just to prevent loss of troops

3 I rarely used cheats i only used the money cheat when i was low on money and my towns were subtracting a whole lot of money (-2,500 from one town) my tip only use the money cheat if you really need to (almost no money)

4 Fighting your battles out isn't fun it is AWESOMELY EPIC!

5 (new tip) If a town has low population make peasants in a different town send them to that town then disband them and it will add to the population

6 (new tip) When you capture a town resist the temptation to exterminate the population and get a ton of money enslaving or occupying will prove better because it won't get rid of most everyone in the town resulting in low population.

7 (new tip) Don't make a rush for the expansion of your empire plan out what needs to be done but make sure your plan can adjust to an unexpected situation or you will lose.

I now hope we can agree on a few more things about rtw and to all you soon to be rtw mac gamers out there i wish you good gaming (yes i got that from iron chef america then tweaked it to fit the idea of video games)

it dosn't mather how "often" you cheat, cheating is still cheating =) so... I dont cheat, funnier to finish the game without cheating, if you get low on money you start figuring out WHAT THE CHICKEN AND HIS FLOWER DID MY MONEY GO! and then you make money =)

cheating

Well hey I'm just a noob who's done his research on rtw

The Game Itself

Getting back to the game itself . . .

In addition to the two military games in RTW (the strategic move-unit-around-the-Mediterranean, and the tactical charge-with-your-legions), there's an economic game woven in.

If you find you're running out of money in RTW, that just means you haven't been paying attention to the economic game. For example, if a unit cost 600 to build and 100 per turn in support, if you're not going to use that unit in the next six turns, disband it. Another example: if you wait eight turns with a 10 unit army to siege a city, that costs you 8,000. You can't afford to piss away 8,000, so go ahead and attack that city. The economic game is much deeper than these two examples. Pay attention and you will be rewarded in gold and victory.

One other comment: you should be interested in the revenue that a city brings in. Unfortunately, the game only displays a city's net income. Net income = Revenue - Allocated Expenses. Don't bother looking at the city's net income that the game shows you - even if the net income is negative, that city is still contributing revenue, which is a good thing.

Wasn't interested in this, but it does sound pretty good. Too bad it will probably cost close to full price, while the Windows version is probably on throw out tables.

It is priced at $30 RRP (you might get better deals if you look about) or £20 pounds if you are in the UK. For a complete game and expansion pack which takes well over 200 hours to complete that is not bad value I hope!

Yeah, it was on Steam for $2.50 a few weeks ago...

1 That's right you never said I was a noob I said I was a noob.

2 If everyone liked windows that would mean apple would go out of business and that would mean no ipods and Itouches and Iphones then microsoft would make cruddy versions of them like micropods and microtouches. Then the apocalypse would happen and we'd all die from the boredom of not as good computers. A world like that is what is commonly referred to as hell.

So probably around $40 AU or so. Not too bad really, maybe I will pick it up one day.

GREAT BIG HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT TIME!

It is with great pleasure that I can reveal to you all at the release date for Rome is February 5th! Here's our news post: feralinteractive.com/news

I'd just like to say thanks for your patience, guys. Not long to wait now! Maybe it's time to start brushing up on your tactical skills? Do you have Sun Tzu's The Art Of War on loan from the local library?

Ordering takeout pizza and watching Gladiator is basically the same as learning Latin, right?

Excellent! I'm ordering my copy from Amazon today! :)

I hope you guys might also consider doing a port of "Medieval 2" sometime soon. FWIW, I can see the TW games series being as successful on Mac as MacSoft's excellent ports of the entire "AoE" franchise.

Like you wouldn't believe!

The game should be available worldwide on the 5th. We'll be shipping internationally from our webstore as soon as we get boxed copies, which *may* be just before the 5th, but we'll have to see.

Excellent news. Thanks Feral. Really good deal considering it includes the expansion as well. :)

I'm assuming we'll see the demo sometime in February as well?
