Not sure about dallison13, but my setup is what you list, except I am still on WatchOS3.

As long as you are on iOS 11 and have the RunGap beta, you should be able to export all data including GPS coordinates to Strava. WatchOS4 isn't required.

Watch os4 has removed the map from the workout/activity app (watch series 1) so it can’t be exported to run gap because it’s not there anymore.

I ran today starting the watch workout app with my iPhone with me and the post run check of the workout in the activity app now shows no map.

So not only have they removed the music functionality links to the iPhone but the workout maps have gone as well - obviously to get everybody to upgrade to the new watch.

This is a bug surely? They’ve essentially disabled gps for the in built workout app. Do we know if it still works with strava etc?

My series 0 when running with the iPhone includes a map and heart rate data, not sure what would cause this for your watch. - I’m on the GM of watchOS 4

Not to be the average IT supporter dude, but you're sure it's connected right to the iPhone while running? Ran a lot back with my S0 and if I took off without my phone it would behave like you describe - with the phone I got maps (WatchOS 2)

Sorry but I’m using a series 2 with in built gps. Until Watch os4 it would save a map without me taking the phone. Yesterday it did not save the map and it didn’t appear when I exported to strava either. Today I used the strava Watch app and it worked perfectly

Just had the same experience with WatchOS4 using the builtin Workout app. Ran without the phone .. like I always do .. finished the run normally by clicking done. First issue, the run took about 45 minutes to sync to my phone .. and when it did, it didn't include any map data. I am sorry but that is an unpardonable sin for any workout app, especially the native app provided by Apple.

I guess it is back to Strava or some other 3rd party app for me. I will miss some of the new stuff like HR recovery, but you just can't lose the GPS data.

How is the Strava app when used with a gps-capable Apple Watch? I’ve just upgraded to a series 3 and looking forward to ditching the phone for some runs.

Search results so far seem inconclusive as to which app is “best”. I’m looking for something reliable which supports export to Strava, hence Strava was my first guess. I’ll continue to use my Suunto for long hill runs, but open to suggestions for the day to day running.

Thanks!

I use it on series 2 gps. I find it to be very basic but reliable

Thanks for the info, will give it a go tomorrow morning then.

I know a few people had good things to say about the Nike Run Club App, so might have a go with that for another run and see how they compare.

It’s very slick but it’s a no go for me. It doesn’t work with external heart rate monitors, it can’t export maps to strava and it’s crashed on me a few times.

I’ve heard that the Apple’s Workouts app is the best if you can get over that it’s not gonna be exportable to Strava etc. Does anyone know if there is an app that’ll keep track of your PRs? I know apps can plug into HealthKit, is there one that’ll do that to analyze what your PRs are? That would hypothetically cross over a bunch of different running apps!

You can export from the workouts app to strava using RunGap

I’ve been using the Nike app. I love it. It’s very accurate.

Works OK for me when I use it. I find auto pause to be overly sensitive, and the heart rate data wonky at times, but other than that it works pretty well and always syncs quickly and reliably to the phone. Can't say that for a lot of other running apps, including the built in Workout app which on two occasions recently didn't pass the GPS data to the phone and regularly takes upwards of 15 minutes to sync from the watch to the phone.

That's a shame about the built-in workout app. I remember when i got the S0 watch, there was something very appealing about such a simple app... could see the potential but sounds like its never really been built on. And if there's now synch and reliability issues then that's really disappointing.

To me it’s come a long way since S0 version one, but the export feature is one of the last missing pieces

So if you start the run on the Strava app on the watch but have your phone with you, presumably its using the GPS on your phone to record the run?

I just wanted to share how awesome RunGap is!! I just discovered it this week and I can finally export GPS data from the Apple Workouts app to Strava, Garmin ect. - and it works great!!! The Garmin Connect app I think is the best citizen of this data import from Apple Watch’s Workout app, love how this app also makes it easy to migrate from RunKeeper to another service. Give it a go.

The GPS data access to the Workouts app is new to iOS 11!

My understanding is that gps for any app on Apple Watch will default to iPhone whenever possible to save battery.

No it's purely up to the developer to code it that way.. Nike for example hasn't implemented it that way, but use the GPS of the device you start the run on... I like the Apple way better but as long as you know how it works it's possible to work with it.

Just curious, what's the "Apple way"? For instance, if I use the AW Workout app on an Outdoor Run, start the run using the AW, iPhone in pocket ... which GPS would be used (I have an S2)? I would assume that the phone's GPS is being used, but I think the AW's GPS is what's actually used. At least that was with iOS 10 and wOS 3.2.3

I was having problems with GPS data coming from the AW. The maps looked fine, but the distances were off by 15% when recorded by both NRC+ and AW Workout.

Either way, I think I fixed it to the point where the iPhone GPS and AW GPS are pretty close to each other. I did a re-pair, but also found a "second" Motion Tracking setting that I flipped to the ON position.

When you bring your phone it should use that as GPS - if you have a Series 2, you can see by the altitude of your runs is included when you bring it and not if you don’t
