Looks like Nike is up to their tricks again. Changing their available sampling output from 1 or 4 to 10 seconds, when exported to another platform. I assume this is just for Smashrun, but if the data I export out of Nike via RunGap is every 10 seconds from now on, then I'll literally delete the app off my watch. @Bob190, any thoughts on this?
Here is the link... http://blog.smashrun.com/nike-import-changes/

Start the delete process @dallison13 ...

I just exported my run yesterday from Strava that I uploaded via RunGap and the trackpoints are indeed 10 seconds apart sadly. I thought the run looked a bit strange in Strava yesterday with many of the corners being cut, etc.

Given I am not running much here lately due to some foot injury issues, I will continue to use NRC, but I am still holding out hope that Strava gets it's act together and eventually progresses to an accurate and feature rich app. I know many on the Strava forum sing the praises of Motifit, but personally I don't care for it (and I am being nice).

Don't know whatever happened to iSmoothRun who promised an AW2 app in Jan/Feb. The developer seems to no longer respond to queries about it, so I assume he gave up completely.

Nothing else new on the horizon I don't believe, so we are kind of stuck with what is currently available. Again, Strava shows the most potential, but they seem to move at a snail's pace with their updates and feature additions.

I went back and looked at a few older runs from March, 2017 and it looks like runs recorded via NRC and then exported to Strava via RunGap have always been 10s intervals between track points. I think that is why the tracks from NRC look smoother than other apps like Strava, etc.

I did export a run that I did with the Strava AW2 app, and it looks like it uses smart recording with intervals between 1 and 5 seconds.

A little update on my experiences...

I'm hoping that in June, Apple will announce a few WatchOS updates. Here is what I'd like to see.

- The ability to export from the Workout app or Activity app. Period. Sync, Export; Call it what you want. I want my data to be freed. I fully expect this to happen.
- Either add more Workout options with GPS or allow us to change the sport after the fact. I should not have to select Outdoor Walking if I go Hiking. or Cycling for Mountain Biking.
- Add titles or custom descriptions to activities...
- Add photos to an activity...
- Add graphs of some sort for elevation, HR, Pace, etc.
- Add historical stats based on week, month, year or custom dates
- Add Personal Records
- Add Gear Used
- Compare your run, ride, swim, etc to comparable events
- Automatic tagging of activities
- Ability to search activities

Well, I certainly am disappointed.
I downloaded the betas for the watch and the phone and here are my findings so far.
- The Activity app on the phone is basically unchanged. A few font changes, that's it. VERY DISAPPOINTING
- However, the Health app now shows the Workout route for a run or walk submitted by the native watch app. That's a positive I think. Maybe apps like RunGap could use that to export to Strava
- The workout app on the watch, while given a coat of paint, hasn't changed that much.
- You do get the extra screen (left swipe) to control music which is nice
- You get to add on another activity, like a triathlon
- There is an option for HIIT
- You can sync multiple playlists
- There is no editing of workouts, graphs, records, gear, auto tagging, etc.
- I think there are new goals coming, but haven't seen them yet.

Sort of a minor letdown, however, if RunGap can get the data, I might stick to the native app until Strava gets their act together.

While the improvements looked to be good, I'm pretty disappointed as well. Sort of hoped for more in this area - they talk about personal medals for motivating you and that's awesome, but how about some more generic stats? Just like the Nike app it would be nice to keep track of fastest 5K, 10K and more like it

A lack of those type of achievements are exactly whats stopping me from purely using the apple workout app. Also keeping track of shoe mileage would be a nice to have (though not essential).
If i could keep track of Personal Records etc in the activity app, it would mean i wouldn't be concerned about exporting data to other apps. As it is, i'll keep using the Nike app unless anyone has a way to track PB's elsewhere when using the stock app??

When you swipe left to get the music during a workout is it the "now playing" interface that will let you change a Spotify song for example or is it strictly Apple Music?

I deleted the app as I said in my post.
I am running the watchos4 beta2 now. It records runs and puts a route map into health which is exciting. Unfortunately, nothing can read it yet, which I assume is due to apps not being updated, or not being allowed to access IOS11 features until the fall. Not sure why apple couldn't have just added a simple export option, but whatever.... Looking forward to RunGap hopefully putting in this feature soon.

I also haven't used the Strava app in a while, as it is just too flaky. I've been running with my AW2 on beta2 and my Garmin 735XT for now to get my data to Strava.

On the AW2, I'm using the built in app which works REALLY well with music now. Much improved.

Part of why I also deleted the Nike app had to do with a "web cleaning" phase I went through a few weeks ago as well. I realized that over the years, I have opened so many accounts for fitness apps or otherwise and have never closed them down or deleted my data. Such as:
  1. NRC
  2. Smashrun
  3. Suunto Movescount
  4. Garmin
  5. Runkeeper
  6. RunGO
  7. Motifit
  8. Tapirik
  9. CopymyRun
  10. TrainingPeaks
  11. Strava
  12. SportsTracker
  13. Pear
  14. Polar
...and a few others. So I went through them and one by one, deleted my data (or requested it) and closed my accounts. Especially the ones that were linked to Facebook. I know that sometimes data isn't really deleted, and its just running data so who cares, but it felt good to do that. I've tried lots of devices over the years and always just left my data hanging out there. I REALLY want to wear one watch and have my data in health and pushed to Strava or the one comprehensive tool I happen to be using at the time. Garmin Connect on the phone is pretty comprehensive, so that's why I keep it.

Also not that I care too much, but seeing my VO2 max recorded is nice as well.

On Beta 2, it let's you choose between Now Playing (if you're carrying your phone) or whats on the watch.

Thanks for the quick response. I have had the Watch for almost 2 months. It has really gotten me back into running. For the first little bit the Stock app provided me with more than enough info. But now I would like to see some more info and have a little of the social interaction that I had with my Fitbit friends. I opened a Strava account and like what it shows, but hate not having the gps map. I have followed this thread, and like you, was hopeful that OS4 would give us some of the things that several 3rd party apps offer. I may try the Strava app tonight on the watch and see what it does.

I've been using a series 2 for a few weeks now with the Nike RC app. My two complaints are terrible current pace (I've worn my garmin at the same time for comparison) and the inability of the interface to show average pace (except when paused).

Chas,
Although I don't use it, you can replace the Current Pace with the Average pace. You can't see both at the same time, but if the average pace is more useful, you can switch to that. You need to change it on your phone (settings -> On Screen/ Display Pace -> Select Average Pace, and the setting will carry over to your watch.

Nope. I see that setting and changed it, but it does not carry over. I even tweeted with Nike Support and they said maybe in another release.

I am looking at other options, as the current pace with NRC is so spotty. At the end of a run, it all evens out, but not good for a race and wanting to know how fast I am running. Today's run is missing half of the map and metrics, even though the distance is correct. Weird. They need some improvements for sure. It looks like just the outdoor run on the Workout app has more metrics on the watch than any of the 3rd party apps.

UPDATE - Ran a 5 mile 4th of July event yesterday and used the Workout App. It worked better than any of the other apps (nike, Runkeeper, etc.). The current pace was way more accurate and the map afterwards was spot on. Until Nike, etc. get better, I will be using the workout app.

Just a heads up about the native Workout app ..

Your map data is locked within your iPhone. So if you use a site like Strava, you are not able to export your run/ride with GPS data to the site.

You can use some 3rd party apps to export the workout summary data, but no map data.

Hopefully this will change with WatchOS 4 and iOS 11.

I have been using Motifit lately, and it works very well including voice feedback, and direct export to Strava.

Give it a try.

Thanks for that heads up as well. I've been happy with the Nike app and it's accurate enough for my uses. I do like to view the maps on nikes website so that would be a deal breaker for me. Thanks for pointing it out.

I really like how the Nike app shows your monthly mileage total as a complication. Does the Apple workout app do this (or any other app)? I'd really like to just use the native app but find it pretty weak on WatchOS 3

Runkeeper has just been updated for the watch. It lets you download your latest training workout and create custom workouts just for the watch complete with time or distance intervals. No voiceover but it's using haptic feedback to indicate the next interval. I'm gonna give it a go this morning.

Hi there Bob! It's been a while!
A little update. I've been testing the iSmoothRun Beta (standalone) for the AW and it works really well. Interface is exactly the sam e and could use a refresh but it's nice nevertheless. But, no audio prompts on the watch only. Just haptic and beeps at whatever intervals you choose. Not sure when they'll release it to the public.

I also have been allowed onto the RunGap beta program, and while the developer is currently touring the Alps, I hope to see a beta soon that will allow export of AW workout maps. Will post when that happens.

How is watchOS 4 Beta? Is it stable enough to run daily?
I have been using the beta since the beginning. During Beta's 1 snd 2, I was longing to get back some sense of normal, but by beta 4 things are stable and working well again. I expect PB4 to be out next week. Honestly, if I were you, and you don't already have IOS11 beta installed on your phone, I'd just wait until the public release.

I can confirm that WatchOS4 Beta 4 and Nike+ run app work fine.

I did have the Nike+ app crash at the end of my first 5km run last night on Beta 4 but all the data was saved, synced to the Nike+ app on the phone, and when I opened the Nike+ app later on the watch the stats were there, so nothing to be concerned about.

STROBE LIGHT FEATURE:
Has anyone used the strobe feature for a night run yet ? How should this work if you are using either the native workout app or 3rd party apps .... ie when you check your wrist for pace or distance info will the strobe momentarily stop and show the stats ....?

I tried iSmoothRun last night. Really like all of the information that it shows, but for some reason it isn't detecting my heart rate. Also, the app doesn't stay open on the watch. Is that normal? I plan on playing around with it some more, but really want to figure out the heart rate not showing.

UPDATE:

Magically it is now capturing my heart rate and the app is staying active on the Watch when in use. :)

Well after many problems trying various apps and betas and things, I've finally bitten the bullet and gotten a cheap Forerunner 235. It does exactly what I need and not much more. I'm going to sell my Apple Watch Series 2 on Ebay while it's still worth a bit. As far as all the other AW stuff I'll be missing out on, well most of that is done on my phone and so I'm happy to say goodbye to it. It was fun but I think this is the best time to sell with rumours of a new AW starting to appear.
