Is there any specific guide you followed?

I've also been meaning to try Ubuntu on my Nexus 4 but again, been too lazy :p

The CyanogenMod Wiki has build guides for all supported devices. Go to the device page and click "how to build for this phone" and it'll give you all the steps.

You can turn off the light on the menu and back buttons so you wouldn't even know they're there.

Yes, but no means to turn off the home button. It remains on the bezel as an eyesore. Shame Samsung didnt make a capacitive home button so it would be ignored like the rest :(.

I would rather use a kanged GE rom though. Used CM on almost all my android devices and those bugs which seem minor always frustrate in daily operations. I like my current phone running flawless. Using power toggles for notification toggles and things are great.

I also have a question for people who are using AOSP baased ROMs like liquid smooth/CM/PA/AOKP etc instead of GE or TW roms. How is the battery life on mobile data? Easy to get 4-5 hrs of screen on time?

I haven't run battery tests but from my personal normal usage 4-5 hour screen time is about where I land on either roms (50-80% brightness through day). Haven't seen huge difference in battery life between them. I'm using the same kernel and settings usually (ktoonz).

On CM I get 12-14h phone on and 3-4h screen on time. Can't compare to TouchWiz since I didn't really spend any time on that.

So those of you who have changed from TouchWiz to another ROM, what is there to be gained by doing so?

As it is, I don't mind TouchWiz at all. It's fast, battery life is OK after turning off all the S-nonsense, I've crammed the Samsung apps into a folder out of the way. Alternative launchers don't seem to offer anything crucial that the stock one doesn't and I've found widgets that work for my needs. My phone is unlocked and not in any way limited by operator aside from data speed (3G only, LTE would cost extra).

Just a change. I don't mind TW at all, but I've had so many different Samsung devices, so its nice to try something else.

The GE ROM makes it even snappier and to top it off, I'm getting EVEN better battery life.

However, there are some issues. I miss some of the TW features, like Air View and the better camera software. Can't even take screenshots with this ROM.

I might go back to a debloated TW ROM this weekend.

Power+Vol down for the screenshot isn't working for me. Wish there's a way to put the toggle in the power menu so I don't have to use an app for it.

You can do this in CyanogenMod: settings > system > power menu > tick screenshot.

I use debloated tw roms (currently on omega) and a major advantage for me is just speed, smoothness and battery life. As for launchers it's mainly preference. I like to tinker with theming and use the gestures in Nova launcher.

Well, I prefer the smooth, clean look of stock Android. I love the black/blue tones. I hate the colors of TouchWiz and it's notification center seems cluttered.

As far as what's to gain? From CM10 there's some tweaks that are nice. However, you gain the most from rooting your phone, regardless of what ROM you use. But, to give credit where it is due.. the TouchWiz camera app is awesome.

Btw if you have a Google Edition ROM, you can use WatchOn so you don't lose the IR functionality.

Well, here's the thing. I switched out of CM10.1 to m3dd0g's GE rom because of the silent call bug. Power+Vol down for a screenshot doesn't work on mine, so atm I'm using an app to do that - but a toggle in the power menu like what CM had would be good enough.

Yeah that silent call bug is a bitch, hopefully it's sorted soon and you can go back to CM.

The touchwiz camera is pretty much the only thing keeping me on touchwiz. As for the look, there is some theming options for TW to get rid of the fugly. I'm currently using Domination Light. Nice change from the blacked out themes I've been using.

It's not a ROM it's a theme you can flash over TouchWiz ROMs to make them look similar to AOSP.

Can you not flash it over the stock ROM? I tried using Odin to get back to stock, rooted and installed cwm then flashed it. It got stock on the at&t logo.

I think you should be able to but I'm not sure. I've only tried it on Omega and it worked fine. I say try again and give it some more time to boot? If it doesn't work then you'll have to get help in that thread sorry.

It could be because you're using an ATT model. The OP says it's meant for the i9505 and i9500. It obviously works though since some people are having issues with the email app they must have gotten it to boot. This was from 15th july so maybe some progress has been made.

Yeah, you would think since it's just a theme that all models would work.
