The writing has been on the wall for some time, Olympus dropped their photography retail line completely to concentrate on medical equipment. I am guilty as well as I don't carry my trusty old Olympus any longer as I enjoy the convenience of my iPhone 13 Pro. When it came to photo purchases I never used Amazon or eBay, always the local camera shop or order straight online from the manufacturers website. Olympus sales site used to have great deals on refurbs.

Kinda off topic but related:
With inflation and what not, my wife and I went thru our family finances, our monthly outgoing subscriptions, 2 months ago, reviewing our musts vs wants.

We decided to drop Amazon prime (and Netflix , a few others).

We buy locally when possible, the Amazon buys are “free shipping” still when over $25. It’s amazing how scope creep happens on these monthly subscription things. Listing them on 1 sheet of paper was eye opening. Cable free OTA tv since pre-covid.

This decision alone will drive me not to add back Amazon prime.

Something for others to consider now.

Nice collection of glass you have there in your signature. I can see why you'd be disappointed with iPhone photography given your list of equipment.
Thank you. It doesn’t get as much use as I’d like. But not because I’m using an iPhone. Just because I’m always working.

Is Jeff Keller still at DPReview? He used to run DCResource before closing it when he went to work for DPReview. I wonder if the main database/content of the site could perhaps be moved back onto the DCResource platform so that it can continue to be available. I doubt whether Amazon would allow this but it is such a shame to see such a huge resource of information disappear from the internet.

Most of the smaller review sites have either been discontinued or have been taken over by larger consortiums, with this as the inevitable outcome: closure when it doesn't fit in the plans anymore.

I'm really said to hear this.

One of the things that I've consistently found is that DPReview's reviews are absolutely top notch. They are thorough, highlight the good points about a product, but don't hold any punches about the shortcomings.

The other thing I love is that they have been around since the beginning. I have a bit of an interest in older or what might now be called vintage DSLRs(even though that term seems weird in context). To me it was great when, for example, I was researching a prospective purchase in 2019-a Kodak DCS 760(I love Kodak DSLRs...) I could go to DPreview and find a contemporary description of camera. The same was true a few years before when I bought the hot mess of a camera known as the DCS 14/n, where they were able to show me what the camera was capable of but were very, very clear about the amount of pain I was in for when I actually tried to use it(they were right).

I really will be sorry to see them go.

The maker of this website is Allen. Especially made because of the closing end of dpreview and for forum users. So just new. Bobn2 (very frequent poster on dpreview), is busy with setting up www.DPRevived.com.
The good thing is, that they work together and will, if possible, try to merge those 2 websites.
I already registered on the forum website from Allen….and he’s open to all kinds of advice/tips/wishes for this website.
I myself am (also) interested in Studio and Lighting Techniques. There was no specific forum, so I asked for it. Within 15 minutes I got a reply from Allen….”done”.
Great!

That's why we are all expressing our shock and dismay right now: nothing -- as far as I know, no other site can be compared to DPR in terms of the snapshots of photographic history they have captured through these past 25 years: they were starting out at the beginning of the whole digital photography thing, and people were talking about Nikon's Coolpixes, Sony's Mavicas, Canon's Rebels.....the very first digital SLRs....and from there everything took off as, slowly and with some skepticism we began shifting our attention from film, and then it seemed as though suddenly we were all excitedly exploring the new and intriguing world of digital photography as more and more technical advances made that possible. WOW. That was a time.....

But that was only the start. Eventually manufacturers and some photographers moved into the interesting new format of 4/3 and m4/3, a world unto itself with a lot of advantages. Then eventually came yet another whole new era, the one where APS-C camera bodies were suddenly smaller and lighter and there was -- gasp! -- no mirror! What happened to the optical VF? What was this weird EVF? All of a sudden there was this whole new world for photographers to explore now, too..... Of course, Full-Frame bodies weren't all that far behind..... And, yes, people are still exploring mirrorless technology now as they decide where they want to go with their photography in the future and which gear really serves them the best in the kind of images they like to shoot and present.

DPR escorted us out of Usenet and the alt.photo.rec Wild West era and took photographers, both professionals and amateurs alike (well, the ones who were around at the very beginning) through all of this, from back in the late 1990's and into the early 2000's and of course all through the first decade and into the second and now we're moving beyond.... and we learned and we explored and we talked about the impact of the changes, we tried the new gear when we were ready, and opinions and ideas were flying all over the place even as people also were looking to DPR to learn about the latest new camera body or lens that might be just what they needed to move forward with their photography.....

We looked, we learned, we sometimes argued or asked too many questions, we wanted reviews and we got them, and we wanted more content in different formats (video) so we got that, too, and DPR was always there, one way or another..... Amazon has announced that they are killing off an extraordinarily valuable (but also at times controversial) internet historical and contemporary resource for photographers. This is just sickening.
I totally agree. It's hard to find another site that can be compared to DPR. And I must say the reviews there are one of the best (probably the best) out there. Unbiased, very detailed and informative, more than what one could ever ask for💯

Yep, I signed on to this new site. Let's see where it goes. After 22 years on DPReview, I'm really sad to see it go. Curses to Amazon!

Oh no! That is very sad news :( I have used the site in the past and is a great resource for photographic information. I never thought I would see this site go in my lifetime and I first came across it over 15 years ago.

I looked at the "dprevived" site, and to my eyes, the forum software they're using looks awful...

Might be, and it will stay like that if nobody subscribes…..I agree with sparksd.

They appear to be a small operation and they use CreateMyBB, which provides for quick and easy creation of a forum host. It's not like they're the same ad-supported large operation that dpreview was. I'd say cut them slack or come up with something better.

OK...
Here's the way it should have been done:

And maybe they'll get there one day. If you don't like their site, don't use it.

I know this is asking a lot, but I hope those who visited the site with their adblockers on will have a moment of reflection. Content isn't free, and there's an eventual cost to having too many free riders.

RIP DPReview, the original and best. Hopefully the Web Archive can preserve its content to some degree.
If I enjoy a moment of reflection it won’t involve the internet.
