Having used the preview for a while - overall I like it. But the tabs moving as I change between them is quite annoying. If they can make tabs 'stay' where they are, then I'd much prefer that
Others here have speculated that there might be a preference for a unified address/search bar and I also think it’s likely. This UI behavior is way less noticeable the smaller the screen. But for iPadOS and macOS this might become a preference option. I’m hoping so at least.

Hopefully, you're not heavily integrated into passwords in iCloud.
I have undone most of what I could and avoid using it for day to day unless I need it (This is fortunately a dev machine and not personal so it's far from the end of the world). Edge has been slowly gaining my passwords now though as I have to use it to access some sites which no longer load in Safari. Hoping the next beta at least improves stability / usability.

The share button is GONE! can't even enable it on the toolbar... This is bad!
I am running Safari Technology Preview on Big Sur so it might be a bit different.

To the right of the active tab is a circle with 3 dots. Click on that to get to share, bookmarks, etc.

Years ago on Mac OS classic there was a 3rd party extension allowing the user to command click and drag anywhere on a window to move it. Implementing a native systemwide function for this would seem required now days.

Years ago there was a browser that had tabs vertically in a sidebar/drawer.

The browser also had ‘Workspaces’.

Users could have many tabs open for several concurrent, ongoing particular research topics such as when researching to buy another car, researching a new camera, researching sexy lingerie etc. The user would have a window open with all the tabs for each topic and create a Workspace for each of them, switching between each Workspaces via key commands of menu action. Shame the Safari team aren’t as enlightened.

Just like Notes, Web browsers too, are very much suited to Vertical sidebar tabs far more practical than any horizontal tab arrangement.

Just add a preference ‘use classic view’, similar to Mail apps’ ‘Classic view’ preference…(it’s in Mojave, not sure if they removed that in Cat, BS, Mont?)

You are mistaken by what I meant, in big sur the top search bar and menu bar was needlessly thick for no reason. This new safari provides more room to view more content on the website.
It mashes everything up into too small and area that does not give enough room for more than a handful of tabs. It also hides away basic functionality like Share and Bookmarks. This idea that "content is everything" ignores that we also have to interact with that content and makes a very unbalanced tradeoff.

Safari on macOS is growing on me - the color matching looks GREAT when you’re on a website with a single background color, like Sonos’s website.

unfortunately it falls flat on a lot of websites since they’ll have static top bars that interrupt the color or they don’t have a single background color.

I still wish I could hide extension icons in an overflow menu, but other than that I really am enjoying new Safari.

In beta 2 you now can hover over the URL and the refresh button appears
OR you can customise the toolbar and add the refresh button that way.
But there is still no option to re-enable a separate tab bar, correct? I sincerely hope they add that even if it’s not the default setting for users that find the new approach a bit of a hinderence to their workflows.

————

I’m also hoping for some tweaks to the way tab group work. Federico Viticci has listed a few recommendations that he would make to their behavior and I think the biggest one is that when you save a tab into a tab group, it’s URL should remain consistent even if you navigate away from it when reloading the group. For example, if I save The Verge’s main page as a tab in a group and then click into a story of the day, that Verge tab in the group is now that story and not The Verge homepage as I set it. Maybe tab groups just doesn’t jive with how I think about tabs, but I almost view them as pinned tabs and any URL you follow should launch a separate tab you then close.

So glad to hear you can customise the toolbar and bring back the refresh button. I hope/assume you can customise all the other buttons including share button and show all tabs button?

Personally I think they should go the whole way and just allow a toggle in settings for classic or new design.

I also hope customisable toolbar is in iPadOS as well but I wouldn’t be surprised if it isn’t. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Thanks!

There is a safari.plist file now in /System/Preferences/FeatureFlags/ where you can set the UnifiedBar to be disabled, but I can't figure out how to save changes. I am so out of touch lately.

I haven’t checked yet. Have they added back the share sheet button, or just refresh. I use refresh from the toolbar far less often than the share sheet. Hiding it inside of a truncated menu seems unnecessary on macOS. The screen is just to big. They’re not saving any space really, so why annoy end users?

Do Tab Groups persist after quitting and relaunching? I'm using Safari tech preview 15 in Big Sur, and Tab Groups disappear after quitting. I'm wondering if that's a bug or feature.

They should persist and also sync between all devices

happens here too, & must be a glitch. they also don't sync between my macs (am sure that's related to the issue). will be nice to have this working....

I found strange thing, I have enabled three finger drag on touchpad and it works everywhere but in Safari. To reorder tabs or highlight text in address bar I still have to push touchpad with one finger, three finger drag is ignored.

Pull down to refresh still doesn’t work in Safari for me. I think there maybe some UI bugs for some users.

From what I’ve read on these forums, this no longer works in Beta 2. Apple doesn’t like back door approaches like this so if they allow for a checkbox then they must be really committed and confident in the new approach.
