Remind me again, who was it who said “design is how it works”?

The designers at Apple these days seem more interested in just putting their stamp on things for their own resumes rather than focusing on function.

Have not used it on a mac yet, but have used it on iOS and iPadOS.

BY FAR THE BIGGEST draw to this new Safari for me is the idea of Tab Groups in a sidebar. I believe this acknowledges that people have way too many tabs on way too many topics open all over the place, and this solves the problem. On iOS/iPadOS I already organized all my opens tabs, from the numerous separate Windows of Safari, into a handful of Tab Groups per topic. Thinking about using a web browser, any browser, going forward, can't imagine browsing the web in any other way.
Does anyone know if there's a similar feature or extension for Chrome? Of course, it would not translate or sync to Chrome on iOS/iPadOS?

That said, I can see, without even having used it on a mac yet, that the moving tab/address bar is going to be a bit of a pia.

That's a really small target and it will make window movement unnecessarily inconvenient. All for looks.
Even MS edge and Chrome have a small target too for window movement, the new safari is the same.

Pinned tabs are there and the Forward arrow appears when you can go forwards.
My pinned tabs are nowhere to be seen, they used to be under my favorites bar, where the tabs appeared. Not my tabs and URL box just do whatever the heck they want, some open windows on the left of it, some on the right. Sometimes this thing pops up on left with "tab groups," but that’s not what I want.

Pin tabs do exist. My pin tabs are to the left. See below.

Preview of each tab is definitely helpful when you have many tabs open.

Can someone who has the new beta software on the mac and iPhone and/or iPad confirm for me:
Are the tabs and tab groups in sync between all the device? i.e. if you close a tab or multiple tabs in one of the tab groups on the mac are they also closed on your iphone/ipad? and likewise if you open new tabs on one device are the new tabs then opened/created on the other device?

Yes, tab groups are in sync and can be closed/opened across devices (affecting other devices after a few seconds). Unfortunately, switching tab groups reloads all tabs, making it all quite useless.

Just to clarify: I understand “tab groups” are in sync, but what about the actual “tabs” themselves?

Also, why do you say that the reloading of the tabs makes the whole thing useless? Also hoping that the reloading is just a beta "feature," but maybe not, I mean, there's only so many tabs that the system can keep in memory.

Yes, the tabs are in sync of course.

It’s useless because I kept losing work in various tabs, losing video playback position etc. it’s not safe to switch groups most of the time without losing state.

They don’t have to all be kept in memory if Apple would invest resources into archiving and restoring state to/from disk. Instead they are redesigning UI like tabs and the already infuriating search/url field just to make it look different :(

Overall I like the idea of the Private Relay. But as a web developer I do have one question that someone on the beta can answer: Can you opt out of it for specific websites? In my case, that'd be only those I help manage (where admin access sometimes bypasses rate controls by IP address). I want this on for everything else (Google, Facebook, etc.), but truly don't want it getting in the way of site administration. I imagine there may be a category in the Website tab of Safari Preferences that lets you opt out individual sites. But, then again, would just as likely assume it is global and done that way by design. So, can anyone see if there are per-site opt-outs? I know there are per-network opt-outs from earlier in this forum thread, this is kinda the other side of the same coin.

I personally find the tab switching really annoying with the new Safari. The amount of UI shuffling is crazy and hard to know where to keep the focus on. (Safari vs Chrome)

I hope you can add the favorites bar back in, because that's primarily how I use my browser
EXACTLY!! I've spent 10 years setting-up bookmarks along the top in the FAVORITES bar (with lots of folders, too) which go to my other Mac, iPad, iPhone and the FAVORITES Bar is essential to me. Someone suggested 2 rows of FAVORITES bars-- I'd be for that in a minute!!! And if they want to add color-- add it to the SIDEBAR in the FINDER! I'm still basically on macOS 10.14.6 Mojave because I can get color and tabs that open side-by-side using TotalFinder-- but that isn't supported for macOS 11 and macOS 12. XtraFinder is for Big Sur-- not sure for Monterey. OK sorry getting a bit off topic here but hopefully favorites bar still there!! Thanks for listening to my rant… Steve 2021-06-11

I'm going to give it a few more days, but having just went to Big Sur for other reasons and paying specific attention to the tabs, I think I'm going the way of I really don't like the new tabs at all. The visuals just aren't that good and the whole expanding in-place across the horizontal plane is annoying. I haven't compared them side-by-side to see the pixel savings, but you're not gaining that much space back and it seems like a change made for the sake of change. Obviously its related to the associated changes in Safari for iOS 15, but they're different use cases and while I haven't played with iOS 15, I'm not sure about that whole floating bar concept either based on the video.
I kinda agree-- this is just "change for the sake of change" IMHO… (I also think that by 2024 there will not be iOS, iPadOS or macOS-- it's all going to be "appleOS 20" -- still hope they retain the FINDER in Mac!! (Indeed what iOS needs is a serious FINDER where one can store files -- not just within apps nor only via the FILES app. I never use the DOCUMENTS folder on Mac instead have a hierarchical system of 18 MAIN folders where I store everything from Family to Finance to Health to Cameras to Mac to SugarSync to my business etc. etc.) OK sorry I'm getting off-topic - Steve Friday 11 June 2021

I hope they have not done away with PINNED TABS - that is the greatest feature after the FAVORITES BAR! OMG do they have to change things just for the sake of change??? Steve Friday 11 June 2021

You are mistaken by what I meant, in big sur the top search bar and menu bar was needlessly thick for no reason. This new safari provides more room to view more content on the website.
You mean, to see more ads ? :)

I been using the new Safari for a couple of days now and I like it. Now its feels weird to use Edge or Chrome.

I like the tab groups, makes it VERY easy to organise my tabs. People have 10+ tabs, some have 50+.
This tab group would be so helpful for people with lots of tabs.

I have gotten used to the url style tabs. And the top bar blends in nicely with websites.
