I'm having this problem too. I have a new 2015 MBA and I wanted to downgrade from El Capitain to Yosemite. I had an older macbook before and I downloaded and installed Yosemite on there. How come it won't show up on my MBA when I search for it in the appstore? Any help/tips are greatly appreciated.

Assuming you are still using the same Apple ID, then check the Purchased tab in the App Store.

Thanks for all the responses here. I usually download the newest OS on one of my computers so that it shows up in my purchases later on for the other computers. I just didn't pay attention this time and didn't upgrade. I think the safest thing to do is to get it from someone you know. Thanks for the info, private messages and links given to me.

Just for my own information, can't one clone an existing installation of OS X.xx to a USB and use that as a backup drive, or to seed a new drive?

If your "new" MBA came with El Capitan installed there is every reason to believe that Yosemite will not install on it, this would fit in with Apple's policy of not allowing one to install an operating system older then what came with the machine.
If you still want to try, check your Personal messages.

Hello, I have just found myself in the same boat. I thought I had downloaded Yosemite though I was always scared to install it due to my complicated audio software and equipment. Now it looks like Capitan might be too much for my older MBP or screw up my audio recording setup. I have been trying to find Yosemite on the App Store all morning but have ended up here. If anyone has any more PMs or knowledge of an installer buried at Apple's site somewhere I'd appreciate the help.

Thanks! Worked perfectly :)

Thank you, I received your pm and replied.

I really appreciate your help with this, very kind of you!

Thanks!

It has been the apple way for many years now. IOS is worse as once you upgrade, there is no way back.

^^^^Which is why on the day of release or during the life of an OS, you should make a an installer USB stick for that OS. I currently have USB Installer Disks for OS 10.8, 10.9, 10.10 and 10.11. That's why I did and can offer to help. I don't blame Apple here at all. It's out with the old in with the new, as it should be. Is Adobe still selling CS6 or Microsoft still selling Office 2011? I still own and use both, but have have Installer Disks in case something happens. Just my opinion.

Hello Lou
would you be so kind to explain to me how I manage to find and keep a OSX installer?

Seeing in my Store App that Yosemite was downloadable (something that not always shows... and no Option/Click trick helps me when ot appears light gray as already downloaded/installed) I tried it... just to see if I can make it.

After a long waiting time Yosemite was apparently fully downloaded (but I have no idea WHERE!!!).

Since I was running Yosemite already, I stopped the installation hoping to find the download and put it aside as you do for possible future use.
However I could not find that over 5 GB big file in any place in the drive!
Somehow by interrupting the installation the downloaded installer had disappeared from my computer! :(
I had the same experience in the past with another downloaded OSX installer as soon as I interrupted its installation. It could not be found any longer in my computer and... then it appeared in the list of my "purchased" apps light gray and not downloadable

Therefore it would be kind if you tell me how to do it, so that I can keep the installers of the different OSX, as you do.

Thank you in advance :)
Ed

I can't say what happens to the installer once you start, then interrupt the install process.
But when you originally downloaded the file from the App store it was put into your Applications Folder.
A normal install will delete this file once the installation is completed, which is why you must make a separate copy of it before you start the install.

Until the installation is actually completed, the installer resides right in your Applications and appears in Launchpad, waiting patiently for you to install it.

Hello hallux

Thank you very much.
If I understood your words, I can interrupt the installation once the installer of any OSX finished downloading and I don't lose it but find later among my Applications.
So, as you say, I must afterwards just start my Launchpad.app and find the downloaded installer to begin again the installation procedure.

Please correct me if I am not right or kindly confirm it if what i understood is correct ;)
Thank you again!
Ed

Ya, just like I said.
Again I thank you very much.:)

Hallux kindly added to your explanation that to start again the interrupted installation. I must look for the Launchpad.app and it will do it with the installer still among my applications.

I assume that that is according to you the way to do it.
Please correct me if I did not get it right

Again thanks for your help jbarley :p

Hello Lou
Allow me a question related to your post.
I haven't learned the procedure in this forum to send what is called a "PM".
Is it what is found above with a mail letter icon as "starting a conversation"?
Thank you in advance for helping me learn something people use here, like in this particular case to ehich you refer.

Lou,
Please let me know if you received my PM. I just read that 'You must have a post count of at least 5, as shown in your user profile' in order for access to send a PM. That is not the case for me since I am new. Up to 3 so far - so I'm close!
