Much of this is design talk is highly subjective about good, better or best.

Agreed.

I just don't think we can call the S8 bland when the iPhone design has become shorthand for smartphone. To me, the design appearance is less important than the design use.

True, yet every review of the S8 has stated it is the best looking smartphone. Only the most bias Apple fans disagree on this. The whole argument is silly anyway, Apple will have the exact same curved screen "slab" in the iPhone 8, so you better get used to it. The thing that gets me is when the iPhone 8 is released Apple fans will be jizzing in their pants over the design which only months earlier was called a "slab" on the S8. Its quite funny to watch as an unbias tech guy.

Those straw man "apple fans" who all conveniently think and say the same things sure are easy to knock down. That you think and talk this way is a surefire indicator you're not nearly as unbiased as you like to think.

From the front I don't think the s8 is the most attractive phone as I find its proportions awkward. For me, from the front, the S7 Edge is the most attractive looking phone and, yes, I include iPhones in that reckoning. From the rear I don't find Samsungs designs attractive at all. Of course all of this is indeed opinion, my own opinion and not one I hold because "every review" tells me what my opinion should be. (Isn't that the very definition of a sheep by the way?)

Ive said this in this thread already, i buy technology based on its merits, in most cases i don't have any brand loyalty. I own Apple Gear and i own Samsung Gear, i'm about as unbiased as it gets. I see the same **** from Apple fans over and over again, its really hard not to point it out. My favourite example was the screen size discussion back in the iPhone 4 days. Apple fans would not budge that a 4" was the perfect screen size. It still makes me laugh and i can see the exact same thing happening here. I shake my head and laugh at some of the posts i see here.

Now looks wise i agree its completely subjective however when a phone is said to be the best looking by so many reviews from an assortment of people then it usually means the phone is pretty good looking. Sure there might be a very small percentage of people that don't like it, but remember you are the minority ;)

I.e. People who don't agree with you. Plenty of people only bought the larger screen sizes because they still wanted an iPhone and had no choice. Plenty of "apple fans" vocally wanted a 4" screen. Plenty of "apple fans" held onto 5s' until the SE was released. But according to you "apple fans", who are still a herd of strawmen, all said it was the perfect screen size. Do you even read what you write? It's absurd.

I remember being told iPhones were "dead" because they didn't have a Pico projector. I remember being told they had "dated specs" because they didn't have a 3d display. Now I'm told I'm a moron "apple fan" if I don't want a display that looks pretty when it's off but actually distorts it's own image. Reviewers can say what they like about the design of the S8 but design is not just how it looks and, by that measure, the S8 falls on multiple levels. The "android fans" (because those are a thing and not an absurd reduction, right) discussing the many failings of it in the S8 thread, or why they won't but the new Note for some of the same failings must be too then, right? I mean tech reviewers, who are always totally on the mark when we look back, said it has the best design.

If you cant even admit there was a backflip of massive proportions when Apple finally released larger screen phones then there is no point discussing this any further. Just stick your head back in the sand ok.

... b) the fact that they are giving them away just a few months after launch says it all ...

The fact you can find places giving them away and you don't want one says it all. Is the s8 like some kind of disease or have kooties? Cause that's the only reason I can think of why someone wouldn't want a free s8.

Maybe you can find deals if you sign a 2 year contract but off contract, the s8 is $750usd. That makes the $650usd iPhone 7 a budget phone ;)

You mean like how limited muktitasking made ios a toy, until Google said they would incorporate it in Android, and it became a great way to save power? You mean like how TouchId was a useless gimmick, until most android phones also managed to incorporate a decent fingerprint scanner* and it became table stakes for smsrtphones? Both things I've read here and elsewhere but I'm not dumb enough to brand everyone who used an android an "android fan" with the same stupid opinions, just because I read someone saying something dumb on the internet and I'm incapable of understanding the concept of individuals with differing opinions.

* before someone thinks thinks they're clever and tells me I'm dumb and some android handsets had fingerprint scanners first, read what I wrote.

It makes me someone who doesn't want to buy one thing I don't want to get one free. If you do want one, getting two because the value of them has tanked in a few months is indeed a better value proposition than it was.

You are comparing a few comments that ive never seen before to the countless threads on this site about the whole screen size debate.

But wait, you're an android fan, so you must have these opinions. I am just shaking my head and laughing now in a totally non-high horsey way, because I'm a sophisticated, egalitarian man of the world. I'm not saying I'm better, but I did buy more than one brand of electronic product sooooo....

The example you use is not even a thing, you are trying to make fun with a totally irrelevant point. The whole screensize debate was a very real thing with many threads on this very site about it. You are just making yourself look silly. You will have to do better then that. My point still stands.

Well if nothing else you have provided me with a few laughs. You remind me of a child when they don't get their way, stick your fingers in your ears and sing out LALALALALA. It only further reinforces my point. Enjoy the new iPhone which has the same design as the S8, im sure i wont see any positive comments about it from you ;) Anyway i better get back to work.

Dude, give it a rest. Retain some dignity. If I'd just revealed to an entire forum that my head canon consisted of a world of purely ios using sheep each, every one of whom argued for 4 inch screens on macrumors, while the android overlords sat in smoking jackets, puffing on pipes and smugly fondling their phablets I'd be mortified. I'd probably delete my account and create another one. It's embarrassing to reveal that's your understanding of the world. I'm embarrassed for you.

What the hell are you going on about. Im well aware that not every Apple user is the same. There are plenty that actually can admit when an Apple product is not perfect including myself. Im also well aware it goes both ways, some Android fans can be just as bad. My point is there are a very large amount that think whatever Apple produces must best. Until Apple release the exact same thing as a competitor then they all of a sudden change their opinion to fall in line with what Apple has done. I have my dignity very much intact.

And Apple abandoned it with the 8 opting instead for an S8esque design

It’s been a decade. Even the 911 gets a bit of a rejig every decade or so. As for the S8esque design, if you’re referring to a reduction of bezels, Samsung was not first to get there.

There is nothing iconic about a design which has the worst possible screen to body ratio. Put a case on the 7 Plus and its a comically huge phone which is harder to hold.

Iconic design does not imply you completely stop tweaking the design. We have gotten 4 years of the same design with some minor upgrades here and there.

No I am referring to the fact that it looks almost identical to the S8 from the front.

Without a case the iphone 7+ is easier to hold than the s8, which I find difficult to hold with slipping out of my fingers. But to each their own.
