Indeed, but with a 6.6inch front display, that looks much better than the Fold's 4.6inch, what's it matter?

Far more conventional design vs. Fold, IMO.

Wow. I just watched the video and the foldable is impressive. It's like a 2nd iteration compared to Samsung's (and I'm a big Samsung fan).

The front screen is huge. Also, the case, in theory, is very creative.

We shall see how well these work...

Can't wait to try them. Unfortunately, in the US, Huawei is harder to get ahold of. Theirs is slated for June.

They priced it after the Fold, if they were smarter they could have made the price lower so it would attract more sales. The greed...

Mate X has 2 big issues.

1. Screen is outside - wear and tear
2. Lopsided weight when unfolded. You can only hold it with your right hand.

Fold is still more practical and looks much nicer

The Mate X already has a protective case, so no real worries about wear and tear.

As far as I know it uses 2 batteries as well, so Huawei could have balanced the device out with the battery placement. One can also switch orientation to where the lopside is at the top or bottom.

Either way, one has to get these in their hands to get a real idea.

What a time to be a smartphone enthusiast

Huawei looks 100x better. And the front is a legitimate smartphone.

It's still waaaay too expensive but it's so much better than Samsung's offering.

I agree. The mate x might look sleeker but the fold is more practical.

The fold on the X is in the wrong place and the folded version is too big. Even if Samsung's version isn't the prettiest it's the best I've seen so far.

The galaxy fold looks way more premium the mate x looks like a cheapo plastic phone

What's all that all empty space at the top?

Also the thing down the edge would get on my nerves. It reminds me of my kindle oasis which is unbalanced.

At least is has a legitimate smartphone screen. The coverage on the Fold is just unacceptable in this day and age.

I think they are both really good for a first attempt. The X looks a bit awkward. However my thoughts might change once it's demoed at MWC. I dont think I would have understood the fold if I hadn't seen it demoed with context.

But off the bat the X looks a lot better but it's not only about looks.

Lol, you are looking at the back of the Mate X

Here is the front and the back when folded:

Every time you get your phone out, you have to remove the case?
That will get old very quick.

The X sure looks nicer but it'll be scratch magnet.
I need something I can pocket.

I am thinking a lot of people just don't under stand, especially after this video and seeing how quick and seamless it is to unfold. You are hating it on the fact its ugly in folded mode... The only time you are going to really use that is to just make calls or a quick text so who cares how it looks when all i'm doing is calling people and holding it up to my ear. For everything else, web browsing, gaming, Netflix, (which is 95% of what people are doing when actually looking at the screen) you are going to have it unfolded and not give a crap about what the folded 5% case usage there is.

Oh!

It didn’t make any sense. It looks nice from the front and I understand it a lot more now.

It’s actually pretty slick!
Haha, it's not just you, I think a lot of people are not realising this.

Essentially, when the device is folded it has two +6inch displays, one is a 6.6inch 19.5:9 display which the Main display and the 2nd one at the back is 6.3inch 25:9 that you will use for Selfies with the Cameras next to it.

For a first generation of pocket-sized, foldable screens, the Fold and Mate X are obviously expensive and compromised. But it's interesting, and most commentators reckon this will go somewhere in the next few years. Probably not the phone/tablet combo, but more as a simply foldable tablet. But it needs more of a reason to exist, than because it just can. It's a real watch-this-space situation..

Why only with the right hand? I would think the software would flip the screen if you used your left hand. Maybe the camera placement might be an issue, not sure exactly where that is, but I'm sure software could get around that as long as it's not in a place that would be covered. Worst case the camera is on the bottom instead of the top, you can adapt or just flip it around again before taking pictures.

They are both more practical than each other in certain aspects. The fold is more practical in protecting the screen, although the case that Huawei is advertising seems like it would protect the screen really well. The Mate is more practical in having a larger phone screen and no notch on the tablet. But ultimately I think the tie breaker will be software, Samsung will easily make a much better version of Android for tablet use than Huawei will. Plus Samsung is almost $700 cheaper and will be available in the US, which most likely means prerelease discounts and BOGO's.

So you have a flap to deal with?
How will you take selfies? (Not that that matters to me much lol)
Which will trap debris between you case and the plastic screen?

I mean, its gen 1 but these scenes will be scuff/scratch fest, the case wont help much.
The Huawei looks better but the Fold will be more practical.

You can just fold the flap over the front screen, since there is a screen on the rear you can do a selfie with the phone still closed. Yeah it's not elegant but I don't see why it wouldn't work. I really like the Mate's solution versus that huge notch the Fold has on the tablet. The case looks like it might help a lot, but depends on what (if anything) is actually covering the screen.

Gen 2 on both devices will have it sorted.
These are both unfinished imo.

Exactly.

The fact that Huawei has also already put together a proper protective solution which they usually include in the box of all their phones is very encouraging to me.

Anyway, no point in arguing all this until we have the phones in our hands.

The Notch on the Samsung goes against Samsung's own no notch narrative, and the front 4.6inch screen goes against their whole bezel less design, the Fold just looks like a mess to me next to the Mate X.

I had assumed that we would see device mostly like the Fold, with 7inch displays, but Huawei really went thr full way, kept bezels minimal on the Main 8inch and the 6.6inch display, kept the phone slim, threw in 5G as well as Expandable memory. Bravo. Their Gen 1 looks like a Gen 2 of the Samsung.

I hope Samsung can deliver something more sleek with the Fold 2.
