The other thing I can see being an annoyance is the need to unfold the device to type in most if not all Apps. Imagine how cramped the keyboard will be on that narrow screen when folded. & even if you went 'landscape', the keyboard would block much of the screen, so you'd be forced to unfold the device, which may be cumbersome in many situations when you want to quickly send an SMS/email.

This is where the Mate X has an advantage.

Exactly!!!

But the Mate brings the problem of not being able to type one handed.

They are both not ideal but it can only get better from here onwards.
My thoughts too. They both need a little help

The Fold is great except would rather have a bigger front display.

The Mate X has the bigger display but also has problems with the folded display and scratching. Then having to carry the protector they displayed would be problematic and get lost. When opened the phone is almost too big

Both folding phones could use a stylus imho

The fold would actually have been near perfect if they just made the phone portion larger. Well the tablet notch isn't anything to write home about either. Stylus would be awesome, I'm actually surprised Samsung didn't include one but I suppose they didn't want to eat their Note sales, and it would have added more cost.

Agreed...should’ve made each individual folded portion a little wider. That would’ve allowed for a better form factor and larger display when used as a ‘phone’ and also resulted in a larger tablet. But again, first effort in a first gen product so hopefully it’ll be refined and improved in the next generation or two.

Back then, virtually every touch smartphone included a stylus intended for a soft plastic screen.

Major problems only came if you grabbed, say, a Bic pen to use as a stylus substitute :)

I had a few cheap resistive touch phones with stylus's, i cant imagine the materials used for them being bent 100,000 times.
I had some not too cheap touch phones with plastic screens which were scratch magnets too.

Hey, I might be wrong, but I'd imagine the screen will be easily scratched on these 1st generation of folding devices, and I'd also imagine the plastic will be a little more pliable than those old touch phones of yesteryear.

The Mate X already has a protective case, so no real worries about wear and tear.

As far as I know it uses 2 batteries as well, so Huawei could have balanced the device out with the battery placement. One can also switch orientation to where the lopside is at the top or bottom.

Either way, one has to get these in their hands to get a real idea.

What a time to be a smartphone enthusiast

I wouldn't want to have to pull my phone out of a case to answer it, look at messages etc... The size is nice, but it just doesn't look premium enough for me, especially for the price.

I used a ton of pocket PC's back in the day and never had issues with the styli scratching the screen. I do remember them being a bit more prone to scratches, but really not much more so. My concern, mostly with the Mate, are microscratches just from putting the phone down on a desk and sliding it around a bit, something I'm used to doing with my current phones and even naked they don't scratch. I definitely think scratching will be somewhat of an issue, but I suppose it's a sacrifice we have to make until they find a solution.

Did any of them have a flexible screen?

I guess well have to wait until someone has one and ask them to use a capacitive stylus on their $2000+ device.

What case are you using that you need to pull it out of to do all that exactly?
The one they showcased wraps around the device and has an opening for the display...

I must have looked at it wrong. It just seemed a little awkward and the case added more thickness. We will just have to wait and see. It jus that for $2600.00, it really needs to be as close to perfect as possible....At least for me.

Both are so compromised.

One is a scratch magnet that that you can't lay flat.
The other is not as pretty but more practical.

It's a shame, neither are a finished product imo.

Maybe another manufacturer will ramp up the design competition.

And a flap to deal with, on top of holding a tablet.
It's just not a good solution.

What the Galaxy Fold should have been...

-No Notch
-No iPhone SE in the front
