For those of you that are interested in the iPhone as a possible next device if the Pixel 4 disappoints, here’s are my first impressions after a day with the 11 pro max.
It’s too early to form too many impressions, but the things that stand out are the things Apple hit on during the unveiling. Battery life is legitimately great. I have something like 5.5 hrs of screen on time today and it’s currently at 54% battery left.
The camera is great from the few pictures I’ve taken. Great pictures every time. However I still think Google handles moving objects a little better but time will tell.
This is more of an iOS thing, but dark mode in iOS 13 is much better than in android 10. Almost every native app as a dark mode and a lot of third party apps are triggered by the systemwide change as well.
Lastly, this phone is way too heavy. It’s a brick an the weight is noticeable. I have big hands and this is going to take getting used to.
If anyone is interested I’ll try to throw up more info as I use it more as someone who’s been primarily on android for the best 5 years but isn’t tied to one ecosystem.

Sounds good, would you get a regular 11 over a regular note 10 non plus?

Love this camera. Got a little close up of my angry cat. Also some shots from visiting Virginia Beach last week.

That’s a tough one. While I hear a lot of good things about the XR and now iPhone 11, I could never force myself to buy a 720p screen in 2019, no matter how good the colors look. So I would go Note in that situation. But if you’re going Note 10, I would spend a little more to get the plus.

Yep. As someone that used the XR, one of the most underrated things to consider specwise is the screen itself. It's what you look at the most.

I like both cameras to be honest. But i think the wide angle is a little better on the Note 10.
I think the Note camera tends to blow out some colors in an effort to lighten things.
I second this. Well, in terms of distortion on wide angle, depending on the photo, they kind of break even.

But on the iPhone I see additional noise and shadows on the edges, too. More so than on the Samsung.

Ultra-Wide is good for wide open brightly lit landscapes. Indoors, make sure you get a photo with the regular lens, too. So that your subjects come out crystal clear after you get that one super wide shot that has everyone in it.

With moving subjects indoors, blur is an issue with both phone cameras but the iPhone seems to be able to freeze the slower moving body parts. 😜

So basically I usually have faces in focus because the iPhone really does a great job targeting the faces. But hands in motion may come out blurred. And hey, that’s better than losing the whole shot!

I need to do more testing but it’s possible my cat photos may be coming out more clear on the Samsung. Probably because the Samsung camera knows if the subject is a cat. It shows a cute little cat icon! Anyway it seems to then set everything to get a good cat photo.

But without me doing a side by side shootout I can’t tell for sure. I’ve been too rushed this weekend to test thoroughly.

I do much prefer the colors from the iPhone. They best match exactly what my eyes s in person when I was taking the photo.

My Note is overall more pleasant to use. It’s lighter and has a more generous display. Also there’s still some question as to whether or not my vision and the iPhone OLED are compatible. Some people have had bad reactions immediately. My body seems to build up a cumulative reaction after a few days.

So that's why I'm getting the best cat photos I've ever seen on any phone? I did not realize this!

I'm watching "The Fifth Element" in HD via Amazon Prime streaming on my 11 Pro and Note 10+ simultaneously. That's actually a lot of fun and a good movie to do that with.

They both have excellent displays for movie watching. The Note 10+ wins only because it's bigger and a bit brighter or punchier with slightly nicer colors. Even on Natural setting. I don't think the colors are more accurate but they look a little better for movie viewing. But the competition is super close on HD. I can't really find a 4K movie available for free to test, unfortunately. Amazon Prime is all I currently have set up for movie viewing on both phones.

Audio is really good on both but I have to turn it way up to make it sound immersive on either one. Of course that's subjective.

I bet a Pro Max would give the Note 10+ more stiff competition in this function.

Oh, possible good news...so far when I took the phones into a dark room I didn't see any indication of black smearing in dark scenes. But this isn't the ideal movie to test for that.

I actually don't plan to watch many movies on my 11 Pro. Note 10+ all the way for that! The rugged Samsung case with dual kickstands just makes it perfect for watching movies. I just wanted to test how the 11 Pro compared. Also I need to see if the 11 Pro display is going to make me sick.

I really like the little 11 Pro teamed up with my gigantic Note 10+ so I am hoping I can keep the little dude. I named it "Spinach." 😹

Oh, my husband is starting to remind me of @Oohara because he actually wants the Pro Max to be bigger!😲 My God that thing is big enough and strong enough to bludgeon someone now. If it gets any bigger and heavier only Thor will be able to wield it!

Okay well I'm going to grab a late breakfast and go back to watching the movie on just the 11 Pro. My schedule is clear today in case I end up with a migraine.

Samsung Pay seems to work with all the machines I have tried it with, even ones where they cashiers told me it would not. No complaints.

Edit: From what I understand, the reason Samsung Pay works at those terminals where the cashier tells me it won't (non NFC terminals) is due to the fact that Sumsung pay takes advantage NFC as well as MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission) technology that is built into later model Samsung phones. As a result it works directly with terminals, even those that don't support NFC, as long as they aren't the type that you have to insert the card fully into. So I find it works with some older terminals. The terminal just thinks I swiped the.magnetic strip on my card and acts accordingly. Google Pay uses NFC only.

We don't have MST terminals in the UK and haven't had for some time, years in fact.

Samsung Pay is far superior in terms of availability. I don’t know enough about the rewards to know which is better in terms of cash back or points.
One of the drawbacks of Samsung Pay is in the uK only few banks support it - most of the major banks do not support Samsung pay. I am surprised they haven't tried to alter that as Google Pay is supported by every UK bank except Barclays I think.
