Do we think the Note9 will be the last of the Note series? It seems like Samsung is keen on getting the foldable phone out by next year, presumably pushing the industry forward, and the Note9 does feel like the peak smartphone from a hardware standpoint.
I think it’s more like an excellent plateau.
I think when the Red Hydrogen One gets released, we will see where the next peak could be. I don’t expect miracles out of a first gen iteration of the 3-D display or 3-D photography. And some will attempt to dismiss it as a gimmick. But I think when you see something depicted as so natural and inevitable in Sci-Fi, yet also comfortable and unthreatening, it’s not unreasonable to think it may be desirable to see that tech come to be used in real life. And we saw a lot of holographic telecommunications in the Star Wars movies. It would take generations of development and refinement to get it to be really good, but when that happens, it could be very lovely and useful to have some form of 3-D holographic communication and preserving memories in such a format.
iPads— I think I first saw something like those in Star Trek The Next Generation. And look how that became a reality. Our iPads seem even nicer than the ones on the show.
Video calls were definitely commonplace in Sci Fi even when I was a baby. I saw that depicted in the original Star Trek. And now we have Face Time and Skype and other forms of video chat keeping people in touch.
What might be tricky to popularize is anything that involves cybernetic implants. A lot of us are wary of such because of prohibitions in our respective religions or some secular philosophies we hold dear. Others like myself have medical conditions which makes the idea scary or downright dangerous. (I can’t even have pierced ears!)
So I think hand held smart devices will remain popular and desirable for a long time to come. With wearables joining them and possibly someday supplanting them.
I think key next steps would be to make our phones more durable, more energy efficient, more safe (eliminating all concerns of any potential negative health effects), easier to use for all ages, more reliable, and more pleasant and easy to carry AND interact with.
Right now you can choose to carry a small phone but you lose some of the pleasure of interacting with it. That’s why foldable tech is the next frontier, in my opinion.
