It's not an opinion, you people are saying that the Note 8 has far superior screen because it has 523ppi while the Note 4 has 518 ppi. That is such a stupidly small difference that you'd need a magnifying glass to detect the difference. The resolution is due to the new aspect ratio. Side by side I don't really see a difference between my Note 4, and S9+ (S9+ has 529 ppi). You're just in denial. The Note 8 was a stain on the Note lineup, and hopefully the Note 9 revitalizes the Galaxy Note lineup

You need your eyes checked if you can't see a difference. It is very obvious when I compared them.

There are a few articles out there that chronicle the reasons to upgrade from a N4 to a N8 and the display is just one of them.

For a start, you’re getting a bigger 6.3-inch display with a Quad-HD+ resolution. This means you end up with a slightly higher pixel density of 523-pixels-per-inch (ppi), compared to the 518 ppi offered by the Note 4. All-in-all, the viewing experience will be vastly improved thanks to the additional screen real estate and improvements in display technology. Colours appear more natural, for example.
You’re also getting a much faster chip: either the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 or Samsung Exynos 8995, both of which are built on the latest 10nm manufacturing process. The old Snapdragon 805 that featured in the Galaxy Note 4 was built using a now-ancient 20nm process, which means it’s both less powerful and more power-hungry.

The Cinema Mode on the Note8 is calibrated VERY differently vs. previous Samsungs. I used Dynamic in the Galaxy S2, S3 and S4 which became AMOLED Cinema in the Note 4 and I used the same setting in my S7 Edge. When I tried AMOLED Cinema on the Note8 it was far too warm, and made me realise that the Note8 AMOLED panel was a massive change from the older generations.

On the Note8 I use Adaptive Display with a bias for Cooler colours and it looks far better than any display I have used

The more I see coming out about the phone the more I think I may be sticking with the Note 8. The only real draw to me would be the larger battery. The new UI isn't a big deal as I run Nova and basically don't use many of the Samsung apps. I've gotten used the the FPS location on back as well. I have Bixby completely disabled so 2.0 does nothing for me either. Holding out hope this thing has some surprises and blows me away because you know its going to be ~$1000.

I can't stand when I hear "bigger display" when really referencing a different aspect ratio. Granted the N8's 6.3 display would probably still be bigger than the N4's 5.7 display if it were adjusted to be 16:9 (by chopping it off vertically), but it would be a much smaller difference on paper. I think that's the point some are trying to make is that there is a loss of screen size in width. I know this matters less to some, but for me it's a big detriment and one that makes an older Note phone MORE appealing even if it's screen isn't as nice.

I didn't say bigger display was better or anything like that. Please read the thread and what was being said about the display of the N4 and N8.
Myself and others were saying the display of the N8 was better than the N4. Just by shear evolution of display technology between the years alone backs up what I have said.

Display and phone size is a purely personal preference and not what was being discussed.

Note 4 was the best and only descent phone Samsung has made imo. Loved the back of it no case needed.

Note 4 was a great phone. But it was not very nice to hold due to sharp edges. Had mine for 3 years before the internal SD started to give way.

But it is no way near my S8+ in usability and look. All this talk about it being the best (surpassing current galaxy) is just nonsense.

Might be to you, it had a back you could replace and battery too, edges never worried me.

Give me the internals/screen of a note 8/9 with the body/shape of a note 4 any day.

The Note 8/9's 6.3" display is only 0.1 mm wider than a 16:9 5.7" display like on the Note 4. So in terms of width, they're basically the same.

Calling the 6.3" of the Note 8/9 a "bigger display" than a 16:9 5.7" display however irks me too, as I feel that it's ultimately the width that determines the usable size. That since we use the phone more in portrait, so in most cases content isn't made any larger unless there is more width to play with.

The new Galaxy phones also have that curved glass making in my opinion the display area a little smaller, because the content underneath the curve is warped + for the Note you can't even use the pen there.

So all in all, I agree that the Note 8/9 display isn't essentially "larger" than that of the Note 4. Still though, I've come to dig the Note 8/9 display. It's like with the iPhone X: that old bezel space is now filled with display, so you can choose whether that's a bonus, or a loss because the resulting format isn't very practical. Glass half full or half empty.

In the case of the Notes, it's definitely glass half full for me, because at least in landscape the effective movie viewing screen becomes huge. Same goes for certain games that I play, the usable play space is a lot bigger than on 16:9 phones with the same portrait width. For the iPX though for example it's a "half empty" as that movie/gaming screen in landscape has a much smaller effective area due to the notch.

No, I'm not accusing you at all, I was just speaking in generalities and addressing the person you were addressing. I don't deny that many actually prefer the tall mode, in fact it may be the majority of consumers that prefer it and that makes it a smart business move. Of course I'm only saying this in terms of pure screen size, not the actual quality of the screen. It only takes the most miniscule grain of common sense to see the N8 screen quality is a marked improvement over something like the N4.

Yes the width is virtually the same because you haven't adjusted the Note 4 to be 6.3" in 16:9 ratio, that's really my point. I understand I may be in the minority, but I'd take a 6.3" with 16:9 ratio phone in a SECOND!! Man, I'm drooling just thinking about it.

Definitely agree with all of your post though. In the end I'm just that old guy yelling at the kids to stay off his lawn, but I've come to accept that this is the future. I think I'm just irked constantly during the day when looking at my iPhone X and how tall and narrow it is, and missing my 7+ for its width. I'm hoping this will be cured with the 6.5" Plus later this year, even though it's still tall hopefully the huge size will be enough for me, especially since rumors point to it being the same size as the current 8+ but without the top/bottom bezels. So at least I'll get my 7+ width back. But MAN... thinking about a 6.5" iPhone with a 16:9 ratio...sigh I better stop thinking about things that will never happen.

But for me I will always chop off a phone until it's 16:9 and consider that the "true" screen size.

I hear ya man, and I know we have the same sentiments on this. Me too I would murder to get a 6.3" 16:9 display phone. If only the size hysteria had gone wide too... That with an S pen would be the ultimate Note, with a size large enough to finally enter real productivity territory.

Ready for the Galaxy Note 9’s arrival? According to a report out of Bloomberg, Samsung’s next big pen-filled wonder will be unveiled on August 9 at an event in New York City.

The Galaxy Note 9 is said to have a similar design to the Note 8, “upgraded” camera, as well as an upgraded processor from Qualcomm. We aren’t exactly sure what to make of either of those things. Does that mean a triple camera like on the P20 Pro? Does it mean simply that Samsung will use newer sensors than they did last year? Does Qualcomm have a Snapdragon 850 in the works to replace the Snapdragon 845? Is there a Snapdragon 855?

In terms of timeline, an August 9 unveiling could lead to a launch of sometime around the end of August. For comparison, the Galaxy Note 8 was announced last year on August 23. So yeah, this year’s launch is looking early.

Got any thoughts on how Samsung might upgrade the camera?

Not bad at all. They need to make a flat model though. Won’t get another Samsung with the dual curves since the screen protectors aren’t there and it makes the phone a fragile babied experience.

I don't use a screen protector, I work with etching sand, always have filthy hands, keep my phone in my front pocket.
I only have the Alcantara case as protection.
I'd honestly go as far to say my Note 8 has been one of the the most robust phones ive owned.
I've dropped it a couple of times and luckily suffered no damage.
I'm done with screen protectors.
Seriously though, my Nokia 1100 could be thrown at the all and would have survived.

The Note 8 does feel awful small in the hand for a device with a 6.3" screen. I would like wider but the industry has spoken.

Not worth the upgrade from the Note 8. They hardly changed anything really worth it.

For me, the S9+ has been a decent upgrade over the Note 8 in terms of :

1) FPS - This is SO much better ( placement and recognition )
2) Stereo Speakers - Self explanatory
3) Camera - The rear camera ( esp in low light ) is quite an upgrade and so is the 60 fps 4K shooting mode
4) Speed - The S9+ is more fluid (in my experience) over the Note 8 ( I still have it ) in terms of UE.
5) Improved RF - At least in my case!

So, with Note 9 having those features ( at the very least ) qualifies as an upgrade over the Note 8..again, imo :)

I really hope Sammy throw in a large battery in the Note 9 ( 4000+ ) because that's my only real complaint with the Note 8 and S9+ !!
