Oh I think I’d take the pop up camera over a notch if that was the only choice open to me. I rarely take selfies, pretty much only while on vacation. I am however, perfectly content with the minimal top and bottom bezels currently on offer, so I would prefer for Samsung to stick with that.
Agreed popup is fine with me too :) providing it's still water resistant

To be honest, I think I'd go pop up for the selfie as well. I've always hated the front facing camera open without knowing when an app was accessing it, malicious or otherwise. With a pop up, we know when it's on.

Agree!! Aside from any security implications, I am simply not good looking enough to take selfies :D :D

Strange people are creating separate threads when there is already a S10 discussion thread here?

Can the admin personnel merge the threads so all discussions are in one place?

I get that. I’m no selfie taker either. Though, I place the method of unlocking my phone & logging into Apps/websites high on my agenda & a secure Face ID is a big trump card Apple’s pulled in their current gen of iPhones.

It’s that subjective overall experience that all these phones try to cater for.

I just want them to keep the same screen size and reduce the bezels to make the devices smaller, and if that means a notch or a hole in the display for the camera, then so be it.

What I hope doesn't happen is that they reduce the bezels and make the screen even taller, keeping the device the same size.

Rumor about 12GB DRAM seems ridiculous at first unless they're going ChromeOS or taking DeX to another level. Plus, it's probably only the premium version that gets 12GB while base probably 6GB to 8GB.

New renders just released from Onleaks. These renders correct the first renders that they released yesterday. The leaks from yesterday showed much bigger bezels. Onleaks didn't give a reason for the error. Nonetheless, this looks amazing.

There's not a doubt in my mind this will be the new trend. Samsung owns the display market, they supply the other players in the market. The Chinese players will just end up buying these displays for their phones. Then Samsung will move from these Infinty O displays, to the New Infinity displays with no visible holes.

That cut out position doesn’t make any sense to me. Why bring it down into the display instead of what would be a smaller notch if it was up against the edge of the thin top bezel? That design leaves a small section of wasted pixels above and to the right of it, bringing the obstruction further into one’s field of view.

Why use a hole in the display instead of a less compromising notch? :confused:o_O

I get what your saying. But aesthetically, it would look horrible if it was attached to the top bezel. And it also gives a perception of the entire screen being used, instead of having a portion blocked off to the bezel.

I agree completely, its as bad as a notch and with wasted pixels. I loved the idea when it was just a single circular cutout for one camera but with the 2 cameras its ugly.

Yup, it looks like it would be a much smaller notch if it was positioned in the same spot as the iPhone.

It also makes no sense in the corner that way as Google has updated android and moved the notification icons to the left and right corners, freeing up the center for notches. This would move everything on the top right corner towards the center.

I don't mind the hole from the renders.....it looks different and stylish imho.
It looks better than the notch on my Pixel and X's Max. But I like the one on the OPO 6t best to be honest.

To me the cut out on one side makes more sense so info on the top bar is not compromised to the same level only having 2 little areas either side of a central notch

I agree, except as @Fernandez21 already mentioned, Android is now designed to have all of its status/notification icons on either side. That hole is right in the middle of where the status icons live.

And aesthetic preferences aside, it’s objectively a more wasteful design than having that same area pushed up just a tough higher so it borders the top bezel. I also personally find a hole sourrounded by lit pixels far more distracting than a smaller notch in that same corner.

LOL just because some Android phones running Pie have a central notch does not dictate status/notification icon locations for every other Android phone.

Pie on the S9/+/Note wont suddenly have an useable area as it has no central notch :)

For those that have dual sim phones big central notches are poor compromise, like the iPhone 2nd sim notification is a squished line. The carrier scrolling text would also be squashed for dual's with large central notches

Even the render just above this shows poorly positioned status icons and several missing as they wont fit

It would be interesting if they made the surrounding area around the "Hole" a notification band to mimic the red/green led but maybe rotating :D

I'm not saying it won't be unuseable, I'm saying that Android pie was design with the idea of a central notch, on my Pixel 3 there is no notch but there is nothing appearing where a notch would be, it's spread out, and even when I pull down the notification panel the top center is clear. You can even see it behaving like that on Samsung's one ui.

Sure, they will probably modify it so everything shifts over to make space for the top right hole, but now thing will probably look messy as the two areas get closer together. Will have to see how they handle it in the final product.

Also, regardless of where the hole is, the notification bar at the top will be thicker than normal and the icons will be larger, that's why we were discussing too about just going all the way to the edge to minimize that.

Who’s suggesting a large central notch? My point is that hole is a less efficient design vs. moving it up a few mm against the top bezel border. Using a hole makes a larger area of the corner unusable, purely form over function, and in my opinion, a form more distracting than if they’d used a small corner notch.
