The reason unlocked phones get updated later was given on a Samsung support page that I linked to and excerpted somewhere around here. Basically they say that because an unlocked phone has to work well with all carriers in a designated region, they actually have to do more extensive testing and work to ensure each phone can do that.

They use some of the work and knowledge gleaned from testing carrier models to help them figure out what needs to be done for the unlocked models. The carriers help them with troubleshooting of the carrier models, so that speeds things up as well.

ah okay, thanks. Makes sense ;)

That doesn’t seem believable to me as we have a number of different carriers here in the UK like you lot in the States do and the Unlocked Samsung phones always get updated 1st.

I just went into a store to feel up the 10+ a second time and came away impressed once more.

Today I saw it even more clearly: hole punch is just way less intrusive than a notch. When I got my new OP6T recently I was pleasantly surprised at how little I was bothered by its tiny notch as opposed to those of the XS Max, Pixel 3 etc, but after handling the 10+ the notch on my 6T honestly feels like a big ol' zit right in the middle of the forehead. Whereas the hole punch feels more like a cool tech element which has a reason for being there, kind of like a cybernetically enhanced eye. When you do notice it at all. I guess this is because the hole punch leaves the entire top edge of the display undisturbed, so that the overall sense of symmetry is left intact.

@Tsepz I don't know if you've got to test the 10/10+ yet but to me the hole punch actually didn't disturb me almost at all when watching full screen videos.

Again I feel like the aspect ratio/thin bezels/the combination of the two makes the display seem a lot bigger and naturally shaped than those on other recent phones with a similar footprint, which to me overall feel just too narrow and long (including that of my 6T). The S10 phones have much more of a feeling of being "all display".

The by me much loathed screen curve seems to be quite a bit more narrow and less real estate-devouring than on the previous generation of Galaxies. This one I could live with, and perhaps even come to appreciate. Immediately after handling the 10+ I went around the table to the Note 9 and I was almost shocked at how the screen curve stands out on it, and how narrow it makes the phone seem. A very clear difference, in fact the Note 9 already felt straight up outdated to me.

And the display quality... I tend to think that people bringing this up are exaggerating and that how much worse can the 1080 p AMOLED on my 6T be, but I have to admit there is a clear difference. Any good high res photo would look good on my 7 Plus, and great on my 6T, but honestly quite magical on the S10 phones. I watched a few 4K trailers on the 10+ today and damn...

Detail: the ceramic back is definitely very sexy, in all colors. I don't really care about the back of a phone that much because I never use them naked but nevertheless this detail impressed me too.

So yeah...I'm already finding myself thinking about how and when I should shift my 6T in order to get the Note 10 this fall...
You felt it up? Did you talk dirty to it too?

Great write up. I'm going to do the same today during lunch.

Doesn't sound believable, but that is the given reason from Samsung, that they have to have the update working on all carriers, and then the unlocked version. My guess is Samsung has some sort of deal with the US Carriers instead. Very little reason in the U.S. to get the unlocked version, but a must for me.

I am just posting what I remember of what was posted on the US version of the Samsung help site ostensibly by a rep answering a customer question. I found it by chance and linked to it on another post either earlier in this thread or a related one in this section of the forum. I myself have absolutely no clue how these things are supposed to work. And definitely have no idea about how it works in the UK. Apparently there is a lack of consistency for whatever reason. You all get Exynos and we get Qualcomm so perhaps that is a factor somehow???? I have no idea.

I wish our unlocked phones would get updated first. I hate having to kill all the bloatware. Especially Facebook.

In my experience, having lived in both countries and a few others, US telcos and banks treat their customers appallingly. That affects software.

On the plus side, you get the cheapest and often best hardware, at times first, in the world. :)

You sir, have won the thread.
[doublepost=1551295483][/doublepost]So I went and checked it out at my local Best Buy today.

Short Review: Is it March 8th yet?

Really though here are some thoughts:

- Since using the iPhone XS Max, it really seems smaller, even though it's not smaller, if that makes sense. I have been using the Pixel 3XL for almost a week and they're about the same form factor, but the S10+ just seems a bit more futuristic.

- The display is better than both the iPhone XS Max and Pixel 3XL, but not as huge of a jump as it used to be though.

- The cutout doesn't bother me either.

- The stock icons? They actually look like one of the fun themes on the theme store. I will definitely be looking for something a little more resembling of stock Android on the theme store, but it's not a deal breaker.

- The stock wallpapers are fantastic and made me wonder why Apple doesn't have one designer to...I don't know....make a couple cool stock wallpapers? Or just hire AR72014 to design them.

- Dark Mode is awesome.

- Stock keyboard seems better than it was when I owned the S8. I love Gboard though, so I hope the dark mode of that keyboard matches the One UI dark mode. Speaking of One UI.......

- One UI makes me forgive all the TouchWiz faults. It's amazing and quite possibly the best software UI I've ever seen on a smartphone.

Again, is it March 8th yet?

Got to admit coming from the max I’m looking forward to trying out themes

So much to look into coming from the iPhone where it’s just a basic settings

To save me searching all through the thread, will the S10 ship with Oreo? And does it still have an on screen home button?

No, it's Pie, and yes there's a home button on screen.
[doublepost=1551299873][/doublepost]One thing I'm curious about is if you use a custom theme and have it in Night Mode, how that will work. I remember there being a lot of dark custom themes before OneUI came out that I was always frustrated with because there were still light elements in the UI, so maybe it just turns those elements dark but keeps the rest of the custom theme?

Unfortunately dark mode does not work with themes. Good news is dark mode in itself is a theme really , since my S9 got the one ui update its been on dark mode constantly, it's awesome!

I'm ok with that. Dark Mode is really all I need. But it should be interesting to see if theme developers will (or do) have more access to systemui elements and could start turning them dark. I'm talking about notifications, nav bar, etc.

I don't use themes very often, but from discussion in a Note 9 thread, Night Mode doesn't work with custom themes on the Note 9. Not sure if that specific device, or just the way it is on One UI.
