I was in the process of switching over so that instead of a main line dedicated to an iPhone and a secondary to an Android, I would go with Pixel 3XL and Samsung. But I’m waiting to see if my 3XL will continue to be as reliable as my Xr is. My husband has had results that make me cautious.
My S9+ definitely is a solid proven device as a phone and a computer, but it is about to be traded for the S10+, which in turn will have to prove itself to me and represent for Samsung all over again.
I remember what it’s like to have only one phone line, so I definitely do understand any hesitation to leave iPhones. I never found them particularly good as actual phones until getting the Xr, though. And now that my iPhone’s modem is as reliable as iOS generally is across the board, it’s hard to let go.
And I’ll be honest. If the XS Max had not given me connectivity problems and migraines, and had been the same good phone my Xr has been (despite battery strangeness), I would not have thrown myself as fully into Android as I am attempting to do.
But for me personally, I can’t be paying those XS Max prices and have WiFi connection issues and LTE connection problems and have a display that causes me to develop nasty crippling neurological symptoms. Also Siri needs to work better. Jeez they had a head start of years and they really blew it. It shouldn’t just be keeping up. It should be leading the pack.
I think iPhones are going to be the best again eventually but they literally make me sick. They might fix that but they improve in such small increments, I’m not going to wait for that. Also honestly, there’s so much about Apple right now and the tone set by its management that really gets on my nerves. Stop shaking me down for the change I found in my sofa cushions while you kiss up to an Orwellian regime, TC.
I am getting the ownership fatigue too. The iPhone 8+ cost significant $ for a "flagship" phone in 2018. Yet, it didn't really move the needle much from the 7+. The biggest waste of $, at least for me, was buying the iPhone 6S+ 128gb model at full retail price back in 2015. The only two Apple devices I really truly enjoyed over the years are the 2015 MBP and the Apple Watch.
My MBP is starting to demonstrate decent wear and tear. Given how Apple treats its laptops, I am not re-upping with another Mac. I took the plunge to get rid of my iPad Mini for a Surface Go, which came from a product line that gave me tons of issues in the past w/ QC issues and software bugs galore.
The Go restored confidence in Microsoft/Windows ownership for me. I just get "more" for my $ w/ more RAM, x86 programing, enhanced biometrics, awesome accessories, etc. I wouldn't want to buy an iPad Pro to get what I do for the most part w/ a Surface. That decision really worked for me.
Back to the smartphone side. So I only paid $500 for my XS Max. The phone works well and does everything I need: core smartphone functions w/ reliable support and performance. But it doesn't do exactly what I want. I have a large display that cannot use two apps on the same screen or offer PiP support, like an iPad. I cannot mirror hockey games from my iPhone to my Sony TV w/o an AppleTV. I am constrained to iTunes if I want to change my ringtones w/ custom music in a file library. I cannot expand my storage at will. Apple utilizes resources for gimmicks, such as Animoji and Memoji. For the price, the phone does what it needs to. I shouldn't really be complaining, but here I am...
With Samsung, I told myself two things: performance near stock Android and a flat display. Here we are another generation later and I am about to take a plunge with a company I dreaded after my S9 experience. Yes, I can get a customizable OS experience, predictive dialing, Samsung Pay, split-screen apps, PiP mode, cut iTunes out, etc. But I am also fearful that Samsung could create hassles with bugs not being fixed in a timely manner and having a poor update schedule. Plus, I feel like Apple might return back to form with iOS 13. But it's a huge unknown. Samsung is a known experience and could be exactly what I hope for in their devices: software + hardware harmony.

Generally if someone is having second thoughts moving to Android they are not ready to make the switch yet. Nothing wrong with sticking to your XS Max, it's a great phone!
I think I am ready. I think 4 outcomes could occur with the S10E I ordered.
1. I love the S10E and I sell all my iOS products to save money, like my original plan.
2. I want to stay w/ Android, but I am miserable with the S10E and will look to grab the OnePlus 6T.
3. I like the S10E enough to stick with it. Apple announces a kickass iOS 13 and I decide to move to the iPhone XR.
4. I really dislike the S10E performance and decide to stick with the iPhone XS Max.
