If a simple software update was such an easy fix, why wasn’t it taken care of before this phone was released? Why weren’t any of these problems caught and addressed by now? It’s not like Samsung software engineers just got hands on time with this hardware recently.

Nearly every review I’ve seen so far points out the same problems and flaws, from weird face smoothing and color science, to the hunting autofocus. I’m sorry but a device that costs this much, and being touted so heavily for its camera prowess shouldn’t be released in this current state, waiting for a promised future software update to hopefully fix these issues. I’d be pissed off if my $1000-$1400 device started with these issues right out of the box at launch, be it a Samsung, Apple or Google device.

Clearly if it was that simple...we would never see products released with issues . Some big companies like Apple has had some really big flaws squeak by all the testing and quality assurance people.

The S20ULTRA is a great phone. Super fast and all that. But clearly Samsung needs to have some urgency and get a software fix out ASAP.

Yeah that's why I think people should be a little cautious about sending it back right away. So basically don't overreact unless a couple weeks go by and Samsung is still talking about a mythical software update.

No not yet.

Second 2 photos has a slight pink tinge on my 27" iMac. Nice looking cat. I had to get our 13 year old Cavalier put down yestreday, horrible day :(
Oh I’m so sorry! My dog also had to be put to sleep at 13 a few months ago. Yes it’s absolutely horrible. My sympathies to you on your loss.

Thanks for letting me know about the pink tinge on the Mac. I only have the photos available to me on my iPhone.

I feel the same way about the iPhone Pro Max antenna and GPS radio. And I doubt a software update can fix that.

I don’t disagree about the other areas of performance—the praise for the speed and quality of the display is near ubiquitous. But so is the concern about the cameras.

Of course there are going to be bugs and hiccups—happens to every smartphone, especially recent iPhones (iOS 11 and 13 were dumpster fires). But Samsung is really pushing the performance of their cameras and results right now, outside of the zoom (10-30x looks pretty remarkable compared to the competition), seem pretty mediocre at best. We tolerate it on phones like the OnePlus models, but they cost half as much.

Yeah we are waiting to see when the fix is scheduled for release. We don’t want his phone to be caught in the same situation my S8+ with pink screen disease was. They promised a software fix. By the time it got routed through AT&T to me, my return period had passed. And the fix was an absolute joke, on my phone anyway.

I should add that in our case since I have an identical Ultra order queued up we can get the same phone and deals back if we return his phone. My extra preorder buys us a little bit of extra time. And I am pretty well settled on the regular S20 and willing to let him have my grey Ultra if that’s how this ends up rolling.

I am very interested in hearing if anyone else is having white balance complaints and blobs on indoor lit photos where even modest zoom is applied. Hubby has gone to bed so I don’t have the blob photos to show you all. I think it’s just noise. Bad noise. Blobby noise.

Does that really make any sense? In a couple weeks, you can’t return a phone. Wouldn't it make more sense to hold off on buying to see if Samsung irons out these issues?

So real question here...do have the same feelings and post the same questions about Apple products? I mean they are over priced by all accounts. I mean by your own admissions you are a heavy IOS and iPhone user. I just wonder as expensive as the iPhone is whether you go into the iPhone threads and express those same sentiments you express towards Samsung?
I mean I get by your own admission you don't like Samsung...so this kinda does seem to be fair.

The 11 Pro Max is pretty expensive....then by all the rumors the next model iPhone will follow the smartphone trend of being more expensive. I'm sure you will post the same critiques in the iPhone forums when that phone is released.....

Indeed. These devices all being sold with the proviso that a software update will improve XYZ issue. Rubbish if you ask me.

Really impressed by the call quality and clarity in the earpiece speaker. Sounds better than my 11 Pro Max and Pixel 4 XL. I recall the same feeling with the S9 and S10. I don't know why but calls on the recent Galaxies always sound superior compared to other phones to me.

Hope the camera issues get resolved. I don't have the Ultra but haven't had any glaring problem yet with the camera. Haven't tried shooting objects in motion yet. Not sure camera is a deal breaker for me, I found far more flaws in my Pixel than I have with the S20+. Camera aside I am trying to focus on all the positives of this phone, there are plenty.

Have to admit - the "doze" part of Android which delays notifications is what absolutely bugs the hell out of me. Samsung make amazing phones - but it's the one thing that keeps me switching back to iPhone for main use.
I can’t say I really noticed any delay in notifications when I had my note 10+. 90% of my notifications are things that can wait like twitter and Instagram and Facebook. It’s only messages and maybe breaking news stories that I’d care about being delayed.

I might have been experiencing FOMO when I had my note 10+ but it certainly wasn’t fear of missing out on notifications 🤣
[automerge]1583307358[/automerge]
One of the worst things was unlocking the phone and being surprised by a ton of notifications coming in all at once. That’s unacceptable. None of my iPhones have had notification delays.

I wish I could talk to Sundar Pichai personally and ask him why this BS is acceptable (and why some other Android BS is as well). I want to one day own an Android device again, but Google makes it difficult to do so.
As much as Apple have improved notifications they are still cluttering up my notifications panel. It doesn’t matter how much I try to clear them they are always so many of them and sometimes they come back. The Apple Watch is a life saver for me in that regard because it means that I don’t have to interact with the notifications panel very often.

I honestly believe that the 11 pro max successor is going to be more expensive than the S20 ultra in the U.K. At the moment the ultra is only £50 more than the base model 11 pro max and you get double the storage and the option to expand it further.

Apple are really going to have to raise their game this year, I say it every year, but the 11 pro max was already a hard pill for some to swallow at that price, should they hike it further, it'll be hard to justify even for tech enthusiasts like myself if it's a small increment like most years.

Yep, unfortunately that would not surprise me. Seems to be a race to the top in flagship pricing these days.

Shame, I really miss the £700 "affordable enough to upgrade every cycle" flagship days.

This is, in my opinion, the biggest difference between Apple and Samsung these days.

With Samsung, you're paying for fantastic top-of-the-line hardware specs, with mediocre software support. Buy an iPhone, and you're paying for mediocre hardware with best-in-class software support.

That wasn't such an issue when phones were cheap enough to upgrade every year. At £1200 - for most people this is an investment they'll want to keep a while!

Looking forward to reading all your thoughts on the new Samsung flagship!

And not just the Ultra. Anyone who picked up the smaller S20 I'd love to hear your thoughts!

And to see some photo samples too!
Some I seen on Twitter by tech reviewers were really impressive.

Apple really did release a great phone last year though. I've been trying to move away from Apple but the fact that the 11 Pro was so good made it really difficult.

I think so too...imagine a base storage of 128GB and adding 5G. Then whatever else by way of improvements and the price is going to match the current Ultra. All of these prices too danm high! as Floss would say lol
