I've read various forums about this, but want to also ask here. Anyone with the S20 notice the blinking white pixel toward the top center of the screen during phone calls (not on speaker phone)? Apparently it is the proximity sensor doing its thing and it does go away when you use speaker phone for calls. I thought my S10e had this, but could have sworn my first S20+ did not do this.

The Ultra has been better for me with one handed use vs the Pro Max. The biggest factors are, the ability to bring down the notification/toggle panel by swiping down from anywhere on the home screen. The gestures are better for either hand cause you can swipe back from either side. The settings menu is designed with one handed use in mind. The default keyboard has numbers on top.

I agree Samsung has made a lot of smart software decisions to make one handed use better for big phones. But they can't do much on the software side to improve how too heavy the Ultra is. I think everything else about the form and ergonomics is spot on for a phone that size. But the heavy top forces me to but my hand in unnatural positions to balance the weight of that makes sense.
Of course it's debatable :)

There is good reason Pixels are cheaper other than the obvious hardware differences

Unlike other premium phones that are feature rich Google pixel "less is more" appeals to some

Pixels whilst is less feature packed OS facilitates faster upgrades (and they are the source) in some respects it often lags behind features added by others more customized OS

This does not detract from it's appeal to some but by no means is it cut and dry for many

I'm not saying Samsung software is bad by any means, but I think Google nails software for so many reasons. I think it's the reason many people in tech are always so hopeful they eventually get the hardware side right, because the software is so good.

Initiated the return for my Ultra with the intention of just sticking with my Pixel 4 XL. And then I spoke to a Samsung rep and he offered to give me a promo code so I can keep my $200 preorder credit I place a new order for a s20 Plus. So now my musical chairs with phones continues. I bounce back and forth but I suspect this will be the keeper. It improves on 2 of the 3 complaints I had about the Ultra which is ergonomics, camera (for now at least), and fingerprint sensor (obviously still the same but its not a dealbreaker). As long as battery life with 120Hz is good, then this should work.

That's fantastic, hope you like the S20+. I still need to call Samsung to see if they will let me keep the $180 preorder credit I got with my original S20+. I'm cautiously optimistic based on your post.

the s20 ultra is 6 grams lighter than the pro max..... and how is the pro max heavy it’s only 226grams. If you want the biggest phones there gonna weigh more. As for this whole pixel vs Samsung business, no google phone I’ve ever picked up has felt premium. There’s always issues with them also. If money is the main deciding factor then I get it there cheap and a good phone for there price once there delusional launch day prices drop That is.

If you think ergonomics only takes into account weight then you're wrong. Ive used plenty of heavy phones and I just switched from a Pro Max. I never complained about the Ultra being too heavy in general, I said its too TOP heavy. You hold the phone from the bottom adn the distribution of weight is at the top which amplifies it. Pretty simple.

As a test I installed the gcam port on my Ultra today. Its obviously doesnt cant take advantage of all the lenses and cripples a lot of the features of the Samsung camera app, but shutter speed improves 1000%. Its crazy that a different app with some software tweaks improve shutter speed and motion blur that much. It sucks that Samsung phone users need to resort to a second camera app just to get moving shots but I guess thats where we are until Samsung fixes their camera software.

WOW...got the S20+ a little while ago. Used the Ultra and the Plus side by side a little. There is quite a difference in ergonomics for me. The Plus is so much easier to hold for me and doesn't feel as top heavy as the Ultra does.
It is a little thinner and lighter. I will keep the Plus and sell the Ultra. Not gonna ding the Ultra for its size. I knew it was big phone and ordered it anyway...lesson learned.

For some, telling others what they should/shouldn’t like trumps everything.

If someone and complained about the phone he bought absolutely nothing wrong if you make suggestions for him.

Oh and ...no need for that childish tone and language here 🙂

Ausomesince86 has been complaining back and forward about the size and camera, so a fellow member made suggestions, nothing wrong with that.

If a phone gives you a good user experience, what does it matter if it feels premium in the hand or not, or looks dated?

I thought telling others what should or shouldn't like trumps everything ? Mmm interesting Lol

Why pixels are stuck in 2017 shape and style like s9 ?
for me the Pixel is my favorite phone so far of the major smartphone releases. What it lacks in some outward appearance design it more than makes up for in performance and user experience.
Sometimes a nice blend of hardware/software and user experience is worth more than just pure specs alone.

But this is all personal preferences and there are no perfect phones.......except the one the one that is perfect for you.....

Heck I know a couple people that still use and LOVE their Blackberries. You would have a fight on your hands trying to get their BB away from them lol

Cool Jamez , very well said and congrats on your s20+ enjoy. you are right about the pixel , i was just wondering why google lagged behind in terms of their phone's appearance.

Huawei came behind and outsold pixels and am sure appearance was effective in one way or another.

Do you experience the blinking / hot pixel during phone calls (not on speaker phone, just regular calls) just below / below-right of the punch hole? This is while the screen is on and you just take the phone away from your face, you'll see the flashing.

Google has always lagged in hardware design imho. I am not sure that is their forte. They are mainly a software company. The first few Pixel phones were outsourced and then the Nexus line was all built by different vendors.

But they do get the user experience right imho.

I'll have to check that out the next time I am using my P4XL....

I couldn't agree more with this. There is just something about the cohesion of the Pixel software and hardware even though specs are lacking. I got the Ultra on launch day, it is a wonderful device, likely best I've ever used. Yet everyday I go back and forth on keeping it or returning it and going back to my pixel. I really wish Google would adjust their release schedule so you aren't getting the phone when the SOC is already nearing a year old. That "outdated" feeling and AT&T installing 5G towers in my area are the primary reasons why I'm still on the Ultra for now. One more week to make up my mind.

Do you mean shape and design?

Shape and design, amount of on-board ram, and also that the Galaxies and OnePlus phones always launch 4ish months later with the newest chip. I know some will say the ram and chip are sufficient and I agree for now they are. However, if you're looking to keep a phone for more than a couple of years we will probably be pushing the limit with 6gb ram and 5G should be more widespread at that point.

One of the main reasons why Samsung phones beat others.
You could say the same about the iPhones as well. Samsung makes great phones no doubt about it. This year the displays are almost flat and rated the best in the business....again!
Look at how much hardware you get for the price. But to be honest...they kinda dropped the ball in the camera software. They can rectify the situation with a software update but they have to act quickly and it has to fix it the first time around.
