The strong Zee Fold 5 rumours of a Zero crease and silo for S pen is just going to make me play the waiting game instead of shelling my meagre resources on the upcoming S23 series.

Yeah my battery life was actually rather alarming for a long time, but I do better now. However, I made a focused effort to drastically reduce screen time for the sake of my health and I switch between other devices. If this were my only phone and I were using it like before, I would probably still be frustrated with the battery life, even though I can see that some optimization has taken place.
From all the leaks and rumors it has been recently confirmed that Samsung is going to be the fab for the 8 gen 2 chip just like the 8 gen 1. I know that someone in this thread previously said that was untrue but I have read at least two recent articles claiming this to be true. It will still be on a 4nm process and not on Samsung's newer 3nm fab.

I actually don't mind if this is true with the caveat that Samsung has improved it's fabrication process. I really want Samsung to succeed in producing a decent alternative to TSMC. With all the uncertainty in the world the more Semiconductor diversification we can get the better.

I have two phones with Samsung fab chips. The s22 plus and Pixel 7 Pro. The Pixel seems a bit better than the s22 plus. Although the plus is okay. I had originally bought a regular s22 and that would not get through an entire day.

Samsung has definitely optimized battery life in OneUI 5 as the heating issue is much better and battery life seems better too.

That being said if you push current Samsung 4nm chips they do tend to get warm and chew up battery life.

However I think a lot of people are really harsh on Samsung chips and fab and seem to criticize them a little unfairly. They are not bad chips they just aren't the best. But tech moves fast and Samsung has a huge financial incentive to do better and capture more business. Surely they have learned from there current chips and might gain some information from Qualcomm by producing some of their chips. Obviously they can't copy Qualcomm but I am sure they are taking notes.

Samsung too has heard from consumers that battery life is really important to them so hopefully it will be reflected in new phones.

The problem with Samsung is it is a huge company and sometimes large companies take time to make changes.

Heck I remember the days when they just started using curved screens and sealed batteries. Back then they had around 2000+ mah size batteries. You could watch your battery percentage drop every few minutes. This is also when they introduced fast charging. You really needed it on those phones. They have improved a lot since then.

I love my S22 Ultra, but battery life isn't as good as on my iPhone 14 Pro Max. I'm in the UK so I have an exynos version, I think that makes a difference. Hopefully with the S23 Ultra having the SD chip in every region, it will mean more battery life. I don't even do that much on mine, WhatsApp I use a lot through the day though.

It is a little hard to do an Apples to Apple's comparison in terms of battery life on an iPhone vs Android. Obviously you can tell which lasts longer. But the reasons for this are multiple. Not just a chipset.

Android uses Java compiler which is inherently less efficient than what Apple uses. So Apple can use 6-8gb ram and be as fast and Android with 12gb or more. More ram equals higher battery drain.

So Android is more of a battery hog by default and then when you through a ton of ram at it is even more thirsty.

Then you take the chipset into consideration and often times on high end chips performance is more of a priority than efficiency.

It would be nice to see Google work on getting rid of Java altogether and using a better and more efficient custom software solution.

However in the Android world when you compare top Android phones battery life can always be improved.

One of the reasons I actually think Google's Tensor chips and design is brilliant is the fact that they don't prioritize the highest performance at all costs. This should I theory boost battery endurance and performance at the same time. They are trying to maximize sustained loads and AI optimization which can also aid in performance and will most likely lead to better performance over time than just brute force approach of Qualcomm and many others. Obviously Tensor needs more optimization and refinement but I think the second gen is already really good in a few years Tensor might actually be ahead?

Maybe we need a 6000 mah battery in the new S23 ultra! 😂 Lol

They are apparently keeping the same 5000mh battery size, the same as the 22Ultra. Maybe it will be better battery life because of the chip and software. It doesn't have to match the iPhone exactly, but getting close to it would be great though.

Other improvements like the camera are sounding great, apparently there will be an update to night photography. That 200mp camera might see a difference especially when using the zoom.

I’m going to test it out against my s22 Ultra when it gets here. If it’s not really noticeably better to me I might send it back and keep my S22 Ultra because my S22 Ultra works so well overall.

I have had so many trade ins in the past because I had a problematic device, so I’m not so eager to give up a flawlessly made one. Overall I think Samsung makes great hardware but I’ve run into some quirky ones.

So the new phone has to bring substantive improvements to unseat my S22 Ultra and it has to not have some quality control gotcha.

Because I can live with the S22 Ultra’s shortcomings another year, easily, otherwise.

I’m also in a really good groove with my iPhone 14 Pro Max. (Neurological problems with the display notwithstanding). I’m so excited to have an iPhone I’m so content with. For the first time in years I’m not wanting to upgrade.

Just…please Apple don’t send an iOS update that ruins my phone and makes me hate it like you did with my iPhone 7 Plus. I loved that phone so much. It was a surprise gift from my husband the year he also surprised me with my Galaxy S7.

I had every intention of keeping that iphone until it died. But a month or so into owning it, we got an iOS update that caused it to constantly alarmingly overheat. It also acted up constantly. I was also still working landscaping jobs and if the sun hit my phone at all it got searingly hot and I couldn’t use it. My S7 was fine.

I don’t think I’ll ever understand how an iOS update destroyed my iPhone like that. My husband tried to troubleshoot it. I can’t remember what all he did with it but it was the usual stuff to fix a wonky phone. Nothing worked. It was never again like it was before that iOS update. So I traded it in when the S8 Plus came out. :(

I’m still going bonkers over choosing a color. I love the lilac pink but I don’t really own much of anything else that particular shade of pink.

Yeah, I don't like how Samsung has the S23 series set up... the Ultra model seems overwhelming stacked with specs.

They could have given 12 GBs RAM to the S23 Plus, there's already differentiate features between the Ultra and Plus (built S-Pen, bigger battery, better camera tech and slightly larger display). And I recall Samsung used to have 16GB RAM Galaxy devices... they could of given that to the Ultra.

Yeah they really seem to try and shove the Ultra down your throat. It gets 90% of the attention and then it's kind of like "oh yeah, here is the s23 and s23+ if you're into that."
Oh yes absolutely. I've kind of figured out I'm really needing a Note in my life currently, so I'm good with the Ultra being well... ultra. But at various other times that was not what I was looking for, and I really enjoyed past Galaxy S series phones that had the specs I expected of the series bearing the S class designation.

They've got a very strong mid range line. It's ridiculous that they're essentially stripping the S series down to more closely align with mid range stats, rather than the past standard where they gave the best they could give each year, barring any constraints imposed by chassis size.

This is no way to compete with Apple or their other Android competition. At least in my opinion. But I'm just an aging SAHM not a CEO. Lol so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Lol I dropped my S22 Ultra on tile recently. It was in the white Samsung silicone case that has a strap attached to it. Some editor or writer for one of the tech sites had a very similar drop in the exact same case and his phone was nicked but seemed fine initially. However, the glass fractured in the days after the drop. So I was nervous about the days following the drop.

I think what helped my phone was the film screen protector. It may not seem like much but it’s something added to at least help with scratches. I just wish I remember which brand it was.

Sigh. My husband had borrowed my 14 Pro Max to use the flashlight and when he handed it back to me he fumbled the handoff and it went flying in an arc roughly three feet across and three feet down. Fortunately there was a sturdy case and screen protector on it because it hit an engineered wood floor layered over a pad over concrete.

I was sweating that drop because I want to keep this 14 Pro Max at least 2 years. Who knows, maybe even longer. I’m not as caught up in upgrade fever anymore. I’m just looking for what suits me well now.

At first I read your post wrong and thought your Galaxy s22 ultra was damaged. Glad it survived. Nothing worse than those type of drops.

I have dropped my phone face first onto rocks and concrete too many times. I live in the desert so all the landscaping is small and large rocks. Phones are bigger and heavier than before plus all glass front and back doesn't help even with a case.

I generally put a film or tempered glass screen protector on every phone I have because it always saves me from catastrophe.

I generally don't buy insurance on phones so the small cost of the case and screen protector more than pay for themselves. Sometimes even with a screen protector and case I have still had damage to my phones.

With my iPhone I did have Apple Care since it covered loss, stolen phone and accidents which is pretty good. It is hard to know if the math works out but when you need these things like case, screen protector and accidental/warranty insurance they really come in handy.

Issue is it’s hard to justify Samsung prices when you have pixel 7 at 599 and pixel 7 pro at 899

Some markets it’s even lower

On the surface that is the case...untill you dig a little deeper. I mean the hardware on my S22U is better than my P7P IMHO. Then the camera is better only by way of better zoom. The FPS is better on the S22U. There are some pros and can on both sides but I think you get a better device on the S22U especially if you factor in the S-Pen. Don't use it much but it is very useful when needed.

You can only guess how annoyed I am with the fact that currently in my country Pixel has a severe handicap with 5G/VoLTE/VoWiFi support missing. Luckily at least one carrier has now received 5G support in the latest betas, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a wider support and preferably also official device availability when the Pixel 8 series launches.

It be interesting to see what they do with prices here in the UK, if there are big price increases I will keep my 22 ultra.

Looking at more leaked photos the purple looks better. It does have a very pastel lilac which almost looks pink but it is definitely purple.

Unfortunately the only model that looks good to me from an upgrade perspective is the ultra.

I would like to know from those that have the ultra how does it feel in your hand? The squared shape looks like the sharp corners would be uncomfortable?

I am interested in how you like the screen, speaker quality and feel of the device? Does it get hard to hold after a while?

Thanks

They are different user experiences IMO

It's a bit like having a BMW or an Audi without the optional extras :)

You may not use all the extras but without them somehow it can feel incomplete and that few $100's saving mars the enjoyment

I get some enjoy the less is more but for me I want a feature rich UI and the extras in a Samsung :)

I absolutely love the screen of the S22 Ultra for watching videos and movies. I also like reading most web sites on it in terms of the fonts come out looking larger than they do on my iPhone so there’s less eye strain. My near vision is good, but I still appreciate larger print. The display is very customizable and I appreciate that.

I don’t like how the text on some web pages wrap around the edges. But I don’t think that will happen with the S23 Ultra. I think this time it’s just the bezel that curves down. I guess I’ll find out for sure when reviews start coming out. Edit:. I just saw a video of one of the ones unboxed and sold already in South America and the curve looks about the same. Boo.

Sound quality of the external speakers isn’t as good as on iPhone 14 Pro Max. They’re less deep and rich. However, I’ve seen rumors of significant improvements for the S23 Ultra with promised richness and depth.

I use a ring attached to the back of my clear case so I hold it very comfortably. Same when I use the strap on the Samsung branded silicone case. It feels lighter than the 14 Pro Max. I don’t really feel the corners based on the way I hold phones. So sharp corners aren’t a factor for me.

The sharp corners are aesthetically awkward looking compared to curved corners, but very welcome functionally. I definitely appreciate the overall rectangular design when I’m using the S Pen.

I have gotten used to carrying it around and use a small designer backpack with a little front zipper pocket exclusively to carry these large phones. But I also can carry them for short amounts of time in the pockets of my mom jeans from American Eagle or LL Bean. I also have some cute cargo pants.

Lol well I think they’re cute. My mom asked me if I’d joined the army!😆

I’m a small woman (5ft, negligible inches tall) with smallish hands I guess. I didn’t think my hands are small but everyone else says they are. I do okay with it, but I use phones with both hands. Even the 12 mini is something I usually use two hands to operate. And as I said, I use rings and straps to help me take the weight of the phone off of the “pinky shelf” that most people brace their phones on. Doing that to my poor pinky causes all kinds of hand pain.

What I love about these larger slab phones is that because they’re large, I can grip them in a way that actually results in less hand strain than the smaller phones. In other words I can more comfortably use an iPhone pro max sized phone than an iPhone Pro sized phone.

One thing I don’t like about my Samsung is sometimes when I am trying to edit a post on this forum or an email that I already composed but am proofreading, a glitch happens that won’t let me erase part of a word and correct a misspelling for example. It will delete the wrong letter or word, but when I try to insert the correct word or letter it sticks itself to the next word in the sentence. I have to just delete an entire sentence or paragraph sometimes! It’s happened on Samsung keyboard and Google’s. It’s unpredictable as to when this happens.

Oh well, iOS is now eating entire emails I send to people. I thought there was something wrong with my phone or account but the kids say it’s happened to them, too.

That’s why I use both iOS and Android devices. So I can complicate my life in different ways! 🤪

I do agree it has a few more options such as brighter display, S pen, better long range zoom, better chipset and more customizable options certainly with good lock, better lock screen options

FPS I Would Say is better but not by much.

it’s just the cost in what you’re getting extra is it worth it. Pixel still gets the edge in terms of smoothness and animations so software wise I think it’s more to most people’s liking.

im excited to compare the two cameras I just hope that shutter speed on s23 ultra is gone as if it’s not it’s hard to justify
